Very hard to say!

Inara has a really delicious dry wit, much the same with Simon. And Zoe.

Wash is more in-your-face funny, as are Mal and Jayne.

River has a few hilarious moments. Book is often funny.

The only one I find more utterly adorable than downright funny is Kaylee, really.

If I really had to choose: Jayne.

For me it's a toss up between Mal and Wash. I mean, in the Serenity pilot when he tells Simon that Kaylee is dead and the scene cuts to the crew laughing, I just about died of laughter. Wash is pretty damn funny too, but if I had to pick between the two I'd choose Mal.

I would suppose it depends on what type of humor you're referring to. My personal favorite is Wash. Alan Tudyk has an eccentric style of humor that I've always loved.

KAYLEE - Captain seem a little funny to you at breakfast this morning?

WASH - Come on, Kaylee...We all know I'm the funny one.

Mal quips and Zoe deadpans but it has to be Wash.

Right from: "'Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!' 'Hahahahaha. Mine is an evil laugh.'"

And the little, sarcastic thumbs up that he gives Zoe when she calls Mal Captain (he likes that).

Can we vote about the murdering people?

I'd say Jayne's pretty darn funny-
Mind it's mostly due to his own stupidity, but he's still funny:)

Dr. Simon Tam: I thought she was getting better.
Jayne Cobb: And I thought they was getting off. Didn't we have an intricate plan on how they was gonna not be here any more?
Kaylee Frye: We couldn't leave them now.
Jayne Cobb: No, now that she's a killer woman, we ought to be bringing her tea and dumplings.

Jayne Cobb: I won't get et! You shoot me if they take me!
[Mal aims pistol squarely at Jayne]
Jayne Cobb: Well, don't shoot me first!

Dr. Simon Tam: A phrase that's encoded in her brain, that makes her fall asleep. If I speak the words, "Eta...
Jayne Cobb: Well don't say it!
Zoë: It only works on her, Jayne.
Jayne Cobb: Oh... Well, now I know that.

Jayne Cobb: We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode!

Jayne Cobb: Ain't logical. Cuttin' on his own face, rapin' and murdering - Hell, I'll kill a man in a fair fight... or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or if I'm gettin' paid - mostly only when I'm gettin' paid. But these Reavers... last ten years they show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eating people alive? Where's that get fun?

Simon: “River, you have to eat! It's good, it tastes like... (takes a bite, makes a face) it's good!”
Jayne: “It smells like crotch.”
Kaylee: “Jayne!”
Jayne: “Well, it does.”

*sigh* Jayne. AB is the greatest scene stealer since Rickman.

For sheer comic timing, Mal or Wash. Or the two together.

Simon gets the best snark, followed by Zoe.

But I think it has to be His Big Bad Self.

I chuckle out loud the most to Wash.
"She's terse. I can be terse. One time in flight school I was laconic."
"I've been in a firefight. I was in a fire once. Actually, I was fired, from a fry cook opportunity."
"Wacky fun."

more Jayne

Simon: “What about cortical electrodes?”
Jayne: “Oh! ... We forgot 'em.”

Jayne: “Unable to get a neuro...”
Simon: “Response!”
Jayne: “Response! Hell, I don't know, if I'd wanted schooling I'd've gone to school!”

Jayne: “Nothin' buys bygones quicker than cash! Maybe I'll give him a tattoo while he's out.”

Jayne: “What do you two think you're doing? Fightin' at a time like this? You'll use up all the air!”

Jayne: “Not as deceivin' as a low-down, dirty, ... deceiver.”
Mal: “Well said.”

Jayne: “You guys had a riot? On account of me? My very own riot?”

Jayne: “You gonna talk me to death, buddy? Is that the plan?”

Badger: “I had a problem with your attitude, is why. I thought you was... what's the word...”
Jayne: “Pretentious?”
Mal: (looks at Jayne, disbelieving)
Badger: “Exactly!”

Mal: “No one's gonna mind if we take a look around, see if there's not something of value they might have left behind.”
Jayne: “Yeah! No, uh, someone could be hurt!”

Sadly I can do this all day:)

My vote comes down to a neck-and-neck race between Wash and Jayne. Wash is so downright hilarious, which is his character... and Jayne doesn't try to be funny, but he's just so backwards, and sincere about it, that he's tremendously funny!

My favorite scene of perhaps the whole series, and a dialogue exchange I can watch over and over without it getting old, is in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when Jayne offers "Vera" to Mal as a trade for little Mrs. Reynolds... prompting an exchange that leads to the highly memorable quote from Mal, "Well, my days of not taking you seriously are definitely coming to a middle!"

LOL!!!!

Wash, then Mal.

Preferably Wash and Mal:

Wash: Well, if she doesn't get us some extra flow from the engine room to offset the burnthrough this landing is gonna get pretty interesting.

Mal: Define "interesting".

Wash: Oh God, oh God we're all gonna die?

I think that scene would have to when I began to fall in love with Wash. That one is so classic! The whole scene is so funny. If only I knew then how many hilariously funny Firefly scenes I had yet to discover...

Of course, Mal's line directly after that proves how funny he can be, too. "This is the captain . . . we may experience some slight… turbulence, and then explode."

And if I really want to illustrate here, I could take it one step further with Jayne's "We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode." and the whole grenade business.

So, bringing this around to a point (I have one, right?)... Hands down, no question about it (for me), Wash is the funniest. He makes me laugh more often than anyone else. He's just so funny in a way that's different from pretty much any other character I've ever seen. Very original. (Eccentric was a good word for Alan Tudyk's style, Deepgirl187.) I would place Jayne in second for his stupidity (sorry, it's true) and his obsession with weaponry, and Mal not far behind him with his... well, I don't know how to describe his humor, but he's awfully funny at times.

Wash is the funniest in terms of intentionally funny. Jayne is the funniest in terms of spawning the best jokes.

Jayne: Anyone remember her comign at me with a butcher's knife?
Wash: Wacky fun...
Jayne: You wanna go little man?
Wash: Only if it's some place with candlelight.

Zoe: I don't think she'd harm anyone.
Jayne: Butcher's knife?
Zoe: Anyone we can't spare.

Jayne: Are you saying she's a witch?
Wash: Yes, Jayne, she's had congress with the beast.
Jayne: She's in congress?
Wash: How did you brain master human speech?

I've always loved the way these two play off of eachother. Led to some of the best jokes in the series (for me anyway). Sorry all the quotes are from Objects in Space, I just watched it again last night so it's the one fresh in my head. It's a Jayne/Wash tie for different types of humor.

I would say that the funniest character is probably Wash, Mal, or Jayne. Can't really choose between them. River and Simon would be tied, they're not consistently funny all the time, but they have their moments and whatnot. Kaylee and then Book and then Zoe.

I say they're all funny and it is really hard to choose between them!

YINYANG

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Wash, for both his spoken and physical humor - gestures, facial expressions, etc.

Mal, because it's always funny to see him react to being made fun of, and his 'space monkeys' quip.

Jayne, because he's just Jayne.

Book, for all his jabs at Mal.

Inara, for all her jabs at Mal.

Simon, because of Objects in Space.

Zoe, because of her 'deathtrap' comment in Out of Gas.

River, because it's funny to be crazy - plus, she swallowed a bug.

My apologies to Kaylee, but she is just too cute to be funny.

Forgive me, for I am new.

A word on behalf of Kaylee - Her argument re interrogating the buffet table in Shindig and her tour de force at the thought of losing Simon - from engines falling from the sky and batteries, are quite funny.

But I have to say Mal. Wash is the funniest for funny sake, but the humor here is so character driven, thats where Jayne and Simon very unintentionally gain substantial ground on Wash.

But we know Mal most, and laughs abound around every well rounded aspect of his character. He is unique, not a villian who skewers the helpless, nor the hero who helps them up - rather, he pokes them a few times - man, I am loving me some Shindig today...

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

"Intentionally" Wash. It's his way of dealing with the 'verse.

"Unintentionally" Jayne

That is not to say Jayne isn't written to be funny, but that the character himself isn't trying to be funny.

Ah hell, they are all funny in that way humans are when they respond to the world around them.

They're all pretty funny in their own way, but I have to say Jayne's the one make's me out loud the most.

Jayne: We need a diversion. I say Zoe gets nekkid.

Wash (not even looking up): No.

Jayne: I could get nekkid.

(chorus of alarm and disgust): No!

Or from what I watched last night:

Jayne: Dear diary, today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. (turns a page) Today we were captured by hillfolk, never to be seen again. It was the best day ever!
