Hi,
I'm new over here. I just wanted to bring up a question I had while watching Serenity today. And no, it's not "What was the deal with Book's past" although that is one of my questions, like it's a question for almost everybody.

NO, my question is a little bit more morbid but i really have to know what people think: Is there a chance that while the crew was inside the tunnel area leading to Mr. Universe's place in the final fight scene in Serenity, that the Reavers were doing anything...unspeakable...to Wash's body? I just think that perhaps Wash being dead would not have prevented them from doing something, or were they focused on killing everybody and THEN taking their skins? I don't mean to be morbid...just a question I had...

First off, Welcome! I just joined here about a month ago and it's a great place. I think you'll feel at home here.

Now, on to your question... which, though mildly morbid (lol), is a valid one.

I don't know if we can really answer that question, not without more information. However, my best guess would be that, no, the Reavers did not do anything. I say that based on River's line while the crew is escaping from the Reavers in the beginning of the movie in the mule. They won't shoot the crew, only chase them. River says that (and I'm paraphrasing here, I don't know the exact line) they want their victims alive when they eat them. So, my guess would be they have no interest in dead bodies. But, I don't know for sure. That's just my opinion.

(And, of course, a huge part of me -- most likely the Wash fan in me -- is also saying "no!" just because it disgusts me to think about it... elch! lol)

You know, I thought about that. And then I thought, Well, that wouldn't prevent a person from getting their skin taken by Reavers. Just because you can't eat somebody...

oh but yeah...the Wash fan in me is hugely opposed to this idea. I can't help but think though...what kind of horror people would have to go back to.

In case this was icking you out - no I don't think the Reavers were doing anything unspeakable to Wash's body.

For a couple reasons - they're predators and they travel in packs. If you notice there's not really a singluar for Reavers. Even in Bushwhacked when the guy becomes one - doesn't Mal say something like "he becomes them"? I could be wrong, he might say "one" but other than that I don't remember anybody ever referring to a single Reaver. And the pack was in a frenzy to chase after the still living and breathing. Predators go after that which still moveth.

My two cents...

Did you think before you started signing yourself as Pax, or is it a coincidence?

Reavers probaby didn't get Wash is the general consensus. There was a "reasons why Wash is alive and 100% well" thread... but it sank into the abyss. Basically, the argument consisted on the .01% (it's hard to find the percent sign in the dark...) of people who survive such an injury. A recurring phrase was "STEERING COLUMN!" Other arguements are that Feds got to Wash in time to somehow or another save him. Anyway. There'd probably be a BIG WTF moment if Wash was mysteriously dissappear-ified.
The crew probably disposed of the body.

Then what are we going to suppose about any Reavers that survived the Alliance attacking them and followed the Alliance troops that came to ambush Mal & Crew after that last stand? Are we just to assume that there were none left? Because I would think that there would at least be a few. And there would have had to have been a body for Wash to have a grave, I'm sure Zoe wouldn't have allowed for a lack of body.

Oh and no. The whole Pax part of my name was actually just a coincidence- it's Latin for PEACE ironically enough.

First, they're memorials. They didn't tote Book or Mr. Universe, and they have "graves" too.

Second, it's only ironic if you look at it from a Reaver's standpoint, and if you're standing where a Reaver is, you are one. If you are a Reaver, you aren't sane enough to think about irony.

To add to Lissa37's theory in the Mule chase,

Select to view spoiler:

Mal says,"they wanna run us down, the up close kill." River says, "They want us alive when they eat us." When Mal shoots the guy who ran out and said, "Take me with you!" the Reavers just drop him like an animal that's no longer interested in what it's playing with.

I think it is kind of fun for the Reavers to run their food down and do things to it before killing it. that's why I don't think they messed with Wash.

When Mal shoots the man from the Trading Station in Lilac, who is being overtaken by Reavers, they seem to loose interest in him, which is why Mal does it. River herself, as has been pointed out, says they want their victims alive when they eat them.

So I think Wash was safe from any profanation by the Reavers. They do skin their victims, but it appears they don't always do that when the victim is already dead (*shudder*), and even if they do, it's probably someone they got, not someone they found already dead.

Cybersnark,

EWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! That was sick!

You, too, Kaneman, though yours was less repulsive than Cybersnark's.

I'm off to look at some pictures of our poor, dear Wash -- you know, when he was alive and well. And not being spoken of in such manners...

EW!!!!!!!!!!

Random thought: I think this type of conversation may be what the vomit smiley was meant for, if I didn't find it a bit too gross to use one... eh, forget it. This situation calls for one.

And now for something from the other camp.

A quote from the pilot, Serenity, about the subject:
Zoƫ: If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into their clothing and if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

They may or may not have done something. Most seemed to like to play with their food a bit, but as there's necro's in "normal" folks, there's probably more than a few Reavers that are as well.

Not what I wanted to think about before bedtime, however.

Wash may be dead, however I just felt the need to add this to the conversation...Joss is a genious and master of surprise. If we ever see more Serenity or Firefly I'm sure we'll see Wash in prequel mode or he may bring him back (against all odds, and yes I'm still in denial). But knowing Joss I think he could come up with some genious way of bringing him back that we could never think of, if he wanted to anyhow.

(Spoilers)

I think as long as there is something to chase, that's the Reavers main focus. Remember what Mal said in Serenity(pilot). So they were attacking the crew until River finished killing them all. They didn't have time to desecrate Wash's body before the Alliance arrived.

And Joss has said that Wash is coming back for the 2nd movie. (I believe. I believe. I believe.)

I don't know whether to laugh or cry! In one sense, that's quite funny, especially if you think of the scenes it's based on. In another sense... it makes me want to bawl! Either way, it'd be perfect for our beloved pilot. How sweet! Thank you for that sentiment. <3

ZOID

RimGirl:

Actually, what Joss said was that "Alan isn't finished with this cast, but Wash is definitely dead".

Others have interpreted this to mean that Tudyk may do some writing or directing. I, on the other hand, interpret it to mean that although Wash is dead, Alan will be playing a different role in the next movie...

So, I'm thinking a) twin brother, b) clone, or c) 'Wash' was a sophisticated robot and there's more than one of him. Think of a higher priced version of Lenore, which does piloting in addition to sexual entertainment (Zoe seemed to like it)...

The robot scenario, in particular, would explain Wash's reticence to father Zoe's child. He can't.

As to Wash getting Reaverized in Serenity, I have an interesting question that I have yet to see posted: Do you suppose Reavers chew every bite 30 times before swallowing? Gulping one's food leads to digestive problems and weight gain...

I reckon Reavers are pretty self-conscious about their girlish figures. "What are your thoughts, Hobson?"

Gastronomically,

zoid

P.S.
A riddle:
Q. What growls, then giggles; snarls, then laughs; rips your throat out with its teeth, then titters?

A. A Reaver with spongiform encephalopathy. (Or, 'A hyena', for the otherwise squeamish reader.)

I hate to say this Gouda, but that was the blooper reel he said that in, and wasn't meant to appear in the final version. I have a REALLY hard time believing even Mal would do something like that to Book! Just thought I'd let a fellow Browncoat in on the secret.
