And as always, there's good news and bad news.

While it has many of the characteristics of a cancerous tumor, they don't believe it is.

But the bad news is that it's so large, and growing at an exponential rate, so they want to remove it as soon as possible to avoid further health risks.

My mom was hoping to wait until January, so her Vacation and sick time at work would kick in, but it's not safe to wait that long. So the family is trying to figure out how to make up two months of my Mom's salary.

I'm so glad it's not cancerous, but my Mom said she was alarmed by their level of concern. I do however, have something to really be grateful for. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers--and if anyone has any suggestions about what to do, we'd appreciate them!

And a last, and somewhat corny thing...signing on to this website (every day, several times a day ) feels just like coming home.

Mal: You know, you ain't quite right.
River: It's a popular theory.

I am so thankfull that it is not cancer! I am sorry that she has to have the surgery, but glad that it will be gone from her body.

Can she not get her place of work to give her the leave early?

I will try to think of something to help. If I had any extra it would be winging its way to you as I type.

There has to be some organization that can lend a hand.

An FMF hug to you. Keep the faith! You have been so brave and I know your mom is happy you are there. A hug to Mom and all the family!

edit: their level of concern is probably due to the fact that even though it is not cancerous, its size will begin to impede the proper functioning of her body and that is a problem in itself. Out Out damn tumor!

afraid i can't offer anything but good vibe's and hope, but i'm sure all will turn out dandy ^^

my mum's having problems with fibroids at the moment, likely to need surgery eventually as well i belive, but, doesn't sound as intimidating as an unknown mass, or the problem's with places of work being bitchy about sick pay, so am throwing all sympathetic hope your way about now ^^

*bags, tags and gets ready to lob hope*

*rethinks, apologises to hope and send's it over on a first class flight instead*

good vibe's too, lots of good vibes.

it'll turn out okay ^^

It is such good news that it is not cancer!

I know at my work we are allowed to donate annual leave to people who need leave for medical reasons. That might be worth looking into in her place of employment.

The only other thing I can think of is Temporary disability, or AFLAC if she sighned up for something like that.

We could also maybe do an online fundraiser on this site. We are many an $5.00 from everyone who could spare it would add up real quick. (Just a thought)

Does your Mom's work offer AFLAC? Or, does she have short term disability through work?

If she does have short term, make sure you check it's rules. Some only will pay if you are out a certain length of time, say 45+ days, others kick in after 2 months, etc.

I don't have AFLAC, but the commercials on tv make it seem like it would be useful in situations like yours.

I live just outside of DC, and thus you can't swing the proverbial dead cat without hitting a government worker. Government workers are allowed to "gift" time off to other workers. You transfer excess time off to someone else to use - like in your Mom's case where she has none but needs some.

So, perhaps if she has a strong group of friends at work, and she works for a caring company, her coworkers could "gift" her time bucket so she can get this operation with minimal interruption.

Just some thoughts. Good Luck.

EDIT: Kelkhil, you...idea stealer! You type faster than me!

Thoughts and prayers headed your way.

Where are you located? U.S.? If so, does your state take taxes for disability programs? If she's been paying it in her taxes, she should now be able to access it. I know it's mandatory in my state, and is what saved me when I was out of work for 4 months due to a broken arm.

There is an elimination period (minimum time she has to be out of work in order to start receiving benefits) that she will have to meet, but it should be short, like seven days or so.

Also, again if you're in the U.S., have her look into Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or Paid Family Medical Leave Act (PFMLA). FMLA allows a 12 week period, taken as a lump or in fragments, in which an employee can be out of work due to medical crisis (family or self) and their job has to be held for them. It also allows the employee to keep their health benefits for that time period, when otherwise they would become "inactive" employess and therefore ineligible for benefits.

If your mom can't access FMLA, and her employer discontinues her benefits, she will have the option to use COBRA to continue them, altough she will have to pay at least 100%, possibly 102% of the premium. It can be a lot of money, but is a lot less than the medical care will cost without insurance. She has 60 days from the qualifying event (cancellation of benefits) to elect COBRA.

That is probably more than you wanted to know...and only applies if you live in the U.S., but I thought I'd write it out in case that it may be helpful.

BAD2VERSE

Just keep in mind "It could have been MUCH worse" and the smaller things don't seem so bad... Keep in mind that she'll be ABLE to go back to work when it's over, and she'll be ABLE to pay her bills, etc.. the other alternative would have been not being ABLE to do any of those things...

It's just a relief to hear it wasn't "The Worst", and it's a relief to the rest of us that have been concerned about it... Hopefully her Insurance will help out. Insurance has saved us from bad financial situations a few times in the past.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.. some of us are chronic worriers... and of course, if we can help, you just have to ask.

Glad to hear they think it's benign. (YEA!!!)
Another thing you may want to check that may help with the money crunch. Many credit card companies & bank loans now have a small insurance rider (that extra buck or two that was thrown in per month) on them (check the paperwork and/or call them) that will defer payments (some will actually make payments) while someone is out on disability.

And for the other fundraising thought? I got $5.00 that I can throw into the kitty as well.

I'm keeping you and your mom in my prayers.

Lots of good suggestions here. Not much I
can add except maybe asking work to pull some
of next year's sick/vacation time back into
this year. Some places will do it; some not.

Find out every option from HR, and your state's
disability program, and look up the appropriate
employment law (state and federal).

I'm glad to hear it's not cancer. As mentioned above if your Mom works for a large/mid-sized company I know that some of them allow other emlpoyees to donate their sick days and vacation time to someone in need.

I'm sorry that Your Mom has to have the surgery and miss all that work.

You are still in my thoughts and prayers.

Quiet Serenity!

Thank you for keeping us (your Browncoat family) informed - I've been praying hard for you and your Mum and I will keep doing so!

I suppose it seems easy to say to focus on the health and ecovery and worry about the money when you have to, but it makes sense too. There may be a councellor who can help with the practical aspects or even advocate for your Mum with her employer... I live in Australia so I don't know what happens in the USA (assuming that's where you are?) but a friend of mine was immediately referred to councelling when she had cancer and they were helpful on the practical side as well as the emotional/mental health side - it's a lot to deal with!

Much love and {{{{{{{QS & her family}}}}}}} from 'New Melbourne' - Magdalena x x x

This is bipolar news.
Okay, so I said it.

We can fix things like this, and if medicine can't, I fold pieces of paper that say they can.
I AM still folding.

I am.... this doesn't help that I'm watching Ariel, now I'm gonna panic and forget to hug you and wish you and your mother well.....

I do wish you and your mother well. And Huggage, yes, the huggage is going on. I'm sure someone of legal age can help you to the bar. Or... I dunno.

You get whatever you want. I'll make sure of that, and if I don't, someone else will.
*Whispering to othe people in thread* Ya'll're gonna help me with the backing up of that promise, right? Slignt problem if you don't help me, I don't have much clout in the world.

Yep, ain't nothing in this 'verse gonna stop me.
