There is a post here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=23146&m=362107#362107

that says:

Quote:

Actually there is a campaign to contact Universal on September 30th. The idea is that every Browncoat should send an e-mail or a letter (I heard that studios take letters more seriously than e-mails) to them thanking them for making the movie and showing intrest in seeing another. I plan to e-mail them and send a letter.

Is this serious? I know Sept 30 is the day Serenity came out so it seams appropriate.

If we are doing a writing campaign should we not spread the word a bit more?

I am more than willing to write a letter. Just wondering what the details are etc...

Anyone know anything else about this?

As Penguin said, we are taking this seriously. In fact there is a name for it on the other Browncoat Board.. it's called the Anniversary Job. They've started a crew actually to do it.

I think that this is something that the Event Team here at FFF.net may begin promoting soon.
We need to do some discussing and some planning and explaining, but I think this may be the direction we're gonna go.

Please give me a day or so to get back to you with what is going on.

And of course as always any Browncoat anywhere is encouraged to do anything he or she wants to do to promote and market the 'verse!!

Great to hear! I will be adding to this as well. Once I know a bit more of what is going on I will spread the word on my end.

I have been converting people left and right to Firefly/Serenity and will let people know (not hard, heh).

I highly recomend sending snail male since its is much harder to ignore than an e-mail ( they have to physically deal with it ).

Anyway, I am sure you guys have it under control so I will keep an eye out for any further details and try to pass on what I can.

Maybe we should be hitting the TV network also.. if we're gonna do this thing, it's just one more addy while we've got the printers and envelopes out.
.. and while we should AVOID all writing the same thing (So it doesn't look like a "Send them this letter" campaign), maybe some example letters would help so it's CLEAR exactly what we want...

They need to be SHORT and get the point across in the FIRST LINE of the letter (Cause that's all that'll probably get read).

The second line should probably be something saying we're WORKING adults, with a disposable income (We have a little extra money to buy stuff we see on TV commercials).. and level of education couldn't hurt if you wanted to throw that in there some where...

We need to get this all on ONE thread so we're coordinated.

You are right bad2verse. Lets get on the same page. If we get some "exsample letters" out there so everyone can follow the same format with their own words in it, the message will be must more effective. Like bad2verse said, the first thing any busy person wants to read is the point. Let them know right away what it is that you are looking for. Second line...etc an exsample letter will be helpful for a lot of people, which will get us more people to support this effort. Post the address on your wall so you don't forget about it, having more then one email/mail won't hurt either. Sending late letters will get the point across if you add that into your letter as well. I am in Japan, deployed. My letter won't get their in time but they will get the point and that is what we are looking for. I agree once again bad2verse ( I feel as if I am sucking up to you, but I'm not) lets try to hit the TV networks as well. Because their was so many "new browncoats" after the movie was created (a lot of people didn't know it was a TV show), how can we advertise this a little more?

This sounds like a wonderful idea and I can't wait to start working on a letter.

I also like the point that we should discuss exactly what is to go in these letters. They wouldn't have to be samples, necessarily, especially if we want to avoid the risk of them looking like copies. Perhaps we could make a list of main points/concepts, whatever they might be, that need to be common to all letters?

I don't know, just throwing out ideas.

And, a question... we want the letters to arrive on the 30th, correct? If so, how do we know when to actually send them? Is there a way to compute how long it will take a piece of mail to be delivered from Point A to Point B?

To Whom It May Concern,
I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for the Movie "Serenity", on this, the one year anniversary of it's release. It has provided my family and friends with MANY hours of quality entertainment.

While I am an Electrical Engineer, I have friends from Doctors to Carpenters that are huge Serenity fans, and we ALL hope to see more of the Shiny 'Verse that we've all come to know and love. I know that many of us are still regular posters on Web sites such as "Fireflyfans.net".

The Serenity Universe binds MANY people, from ALL cultures and walks of life, together with a common theme. This is special in a way that is rare, and I believe that is why it continues to draw fans, a full year after it was released. We hope to see more in the future!

Again, Thank You.
Sincerely,

thats such a great idea!

Do we have to alter the address in any way if we're sending the letters from a different country?

we should totally send letters to FOX as well. as others pointed out earlier, as an initive, a good target would be TV stations as well.

i would be more than happy to send a bunch of letters and to get all of my browncoat compatriots to do the same. Oh! we should send them in brown envelopes!

would the guerilla marketing bit be better to keep a track of this??

yay for Browncoat activism!

That should get it to them from any place in the 'verse ;)

Mine is just a SUGGESTED sample letter.. getting the main points across.. thanking them for the movie, alluding to the fact that it's STILL drawing fans from a base of people with disposable income, and that we'd like more...

It shouldn't be copied verbatim, and I am sure there are people here that can do a MUCH better job of letter writing than I... I'm an Engineer (among other things) and we're notoriously BAD spellers and letter writers ;)

It's SEPTEMBER 30th.. That should give it plenty of time to get there from Japan.. it usually takes less than two weeks to send/receive letters to/from my military friends in Iraq, Afghanistan, S. Korea, etc... So if you write early, they'll get it in plenty of time.

Coming from an Active Duty Soldier abroad, it'll carry a LOT of weight right now with the current "Support our troops" movement here in the states... be sure to include how your buddies LOVE it also ;) You may even wanna toss in some of that "For those of us deployed away from home, it's a welcomed diversion from reality for a few hours"... Hey, tug all the heart strings ya got at your Command Bro! It's a worthy cause... Airborne! (I know, it's "Semper Fi", but I gotta pick on you a little for that "Cross service rivalry" ;)

MANY of my Army and Marine Friends Plan to write from Afghanistan and Iraq, and Include a pic or two of them Watching the movie in their various compounds, THAT should carry some weight, and every little bit helps.

A MOST excellent Idea... I think I'll print up some extra envelopes when I print mine, and hand them out to friends who love the 'verse".. they're much more likely to write if they already have a stamped, Addressed Envelope. I'll just say "These are the main points we'd like to get across, and keep it short"... the "Keep it short" part will make them more likely to actually write also ;)

I'll also toss the Idea out to the people I meet at Dragon*Con this weekend... If I hurry I think my printer can add the Addy and Basic Idea to the back of some of my Business cards before the "Con"...

...Come to think of it, I'll just have him make up a card with the addy and instructions and leave them on the "Cards table" IF he can get them printed in time (I'd be cuttin it close if I give it to him tomorrow, 500 cards isn't but about 70 bux.. but "Time" may be the deciding factor).

Your right my mail should get there on time. I am in a weird position here. I am currently with the 31st MEU in training at Camp Fuji, ironical they do not have any envelops here at the only PX on camp.

Their is other camps near by, so this normally wouldn't be a problem and there is no problem if you are a permanent personal here.

My unit can not go off of this camp. When I get back from the "field", I'll go directly on board the ship and head out. I have all of my things with me now, I won't get a chance to go to any other camp. I do not know if they will be a PX on ship.

I am counting on other Marines to be able to help me out, but I do not want to say I'll get any envelops for sure (I don't really see it becoming a problem once I get on ship, I've never been on ship before and I do not know how the mailing process is going to work).

The idea is, regardless of what happens, there shouldn't be a problem with sending in a late letter and I am only trying to encourage others. Life happens and just because someone might read these messages late, don't feel as if its too late to send a letter.

I understand where your coming from but I can not predict the future. That will not stop me from sending a few letters though.

By the way, when you are in Iraq all letters sent out are free, and they are priority mail. IF a letter was sent without priority from Iraq back to the states it would take two MONTHES for your family to get the mail. In Iraq our military is taken care of. No taxes, free out- going letters, among other things that is not topic related.

If I can not send letters right away because I am on ship, and I do not know if they have priority mail, then I can not honestly say that when I get on ship I will be able to send my letters and have them there by SEPTEMBER 30th. Keep in mind, I am at a differnt camp on a differnt island then the rest of my unit right now, I won't get on ship for another 3 weeks. That leaves me 5 weeks for my mail to get there.

No worries, they'll get the letters and we'll keep pushing for our goal. I encourage everyone who would like to see another firefly to help myself and everyone else support this "movement" regardless of their state of affairs. Bad2verse you were in the army then? Is that why the 3rd degree on my situation of when I can send out letters?

Has anyone thought about addressing these letters directly to Mary Parent? She is the Executive Producer that got Serenity off the ground. She is also in charge of Joss's "Goners" movie. In addition she was in the "Done the Impossible" documentary talking about various Serenity issues.

It should be considered as an alternative to addressing the letters to just "Universal Pictures" etc.

Whatever is decided it should be uniform imho.

Your thoughts?

Yeah, a LONG time ago brother... Used to take FOREVER to get mail overseas or back home, back then. Most letters went through the Red cross depending on where you got stationed (Korea for example) but the RC was good about giving out postcards and envelopes and paper and stuff.. I've written many a letter in the pouring rain under a poncho with a flashlight ;)

I feel for ya bro.. You over there doing some training? I have a good friend in Cali, he and his wife (They are both in) just got back from Japan, stateside, and I noticed his letters didn't take long to get to me (But most of the time we just used e-mail).

Not to HiJack the thread, but Did you go through Paris Island or 29 palms for Basic? If you need any "Care packages" sent your way when deployed, just yell, We have a LOT of deployed friends and family so we're used to sending them out ;)

I just hope you don't end up in Iraq, I know they are scheduled to send a LOT more marines and Army and NG over there.. they are going to announce an involuntary call-up soon of people with time left on their 8 year commitment, and I hope you don't get caught up in that mess.

Actually we just hit up the Sci-Fi channel a while ago, when they did their marathon. But like it's been said before, anything and everything that anybody is willing to do is helpful.

I'm assuming that we're going to be sending news of this out to all the yahoo groups? I'm ready whenever you need me.

Well, just to be clear.. NOT so "Uniform" that it looks like we're all sending out the same form letter.. Networks frown on that.

Not that you were suggesting to do that, but just wanted to make it clear to folks that might not know that while the letters SHOULD have the same points, they shouldn't all be written verbatim. It NEEDS to look like a bunch of folks with the same general idea(s) all wanted to express their thanks.

...I think ;)

Shiny... Let's hit 'em again while we're at it.. couldn't hurt, and might help... It'd have to be a different type of letter other than "Thanks for Serenity one year later"... but I'm Sure we could all come up with something, even if it's just "Thanks for re-airing the Series".

Yup, and when I receive word back from 11th Hour about how she wants to do this, I'll post with complete instructions, including a letter that can be used as a guideline only.
We don't want to be saying all the same thing, we want this to be an overwhelming amount of personal letters written out in longhand with our own personal thanks made.

ETA: And thanks is the operative word here too. Asking for a sequel or pleading for more, or demanding more won't be what we're looking for. We just want to say thank you! It's our numbers and our demographic that are going to tell them we need a sequel. If our letters talk about who we are, how much we like Firefly/Serenity and say thanks and say a little bit about stuff like, I'm into this show in a powerful way and I'll be buying stuff related to this show from here on out. That should tell them what they need to know.

Our biggest thing though is to be to get the sheer #'s that we need to actually do this and make them sit up and take notice.

Uhhh TRUST me here.. You DO NOT want me "Hand writing" anything bigger than a lunch order.. Engineers have NOTORIOUSLY bad handwriting.. even worse than doctors I'm told ;)

After they read MY handwritten letter, they'd wonder if I was thanking them, or giving them instructions on how to build a cement submarine... in Russian ;)

Thank GOD for "MS Word"

Uhhh, maybe some nice cursive font?

My brother's a chemical engineer and come to think of it.. I wouldn't want him writing a letter either.

Yeah I've heard stories where people would go around and make sure everyone had the ablity to contact home. Over here nowadays, we are pretty much on our own. I rather be in Iraq, already did a tour over there. At least over there the things we do have a purpose and "games" aren't played. More then anything, its a financially difficult situation for us "Junior Marines" (E-1 to E-3) who have dependents. On deployment to a place like Japan we actually lose money while trying to support our family a place like Iraq we gain in non-taxable income.

Your right though, I do not want to be caught up in all that either. Been married for the closer to 3 years now. Seen my family for a year total since the Corps. We never went through 29 Palms, its always been San Diego and Camp Pendleton. The Mississippi River is what decides what Camp you go to for Basic Training. I am from Califorina, so I went to San Diego. Furthermore, on the topic of Marines going to Iraq. There is going to be a new Commandant soon. He said we need to add 5000 Marines to our active duty list, permanently (I think it is to help out in the War in Iraq).

To prevent this from becoming a different discussion other then firefly, I'll just email you or something.

YES YES, I say we Mail letters to anyone who can help us with our goal of getting firefly back on air, and a new movie. Regardless of who it is, if they can help they should get a letter.

Does Joss know that we are doing this?

Okay, so call me a Boot (Newbie in Marine Corps terms) but I do not know what this 11th Hour is that FollowMal is talking about. Is that another web site or something? Which brings me to the point of posting this message.

Does everyone else on different web sites know that we are doing this, so everyone on this side of the 'Verse knows what to do and when to do it?

Also, these ideas are floating around on this web site under different subject names as well. Shouldn't we get everyone together on this?

What is going to be done, Who is it going to be directed to. When it is going to be done has already be made clear. Now is everyone on the same page?

HEY! How about we stand on the studio's door steps and protest any other movie until they make our sequel. We could block traffic and everything! Get us on the NEWS! (Just playing)

Hiya Marine!

11thHour is a member right here on this very board. Probably the best place to address questions about all ongoing campaigns is another of the boards here at FFF.net: http://www.fireflyfans.net/threadlist.asp?b=20
