Here's one that's irritated me for ages - why do guys obsess about possibly being mistaken for being gay? "I can't wear that! I'll look gay!" "No way I'm going in there, people will think I'm gay!"

And why do women join in??? "Oooh, look at that shirt! That guy is sooo gay!" "Please, he has dyed blonde hair! He *must* be gay!"

If you listen to Tori Amos you're gay. If you live with your Mum you're gay. If you like slushy movies you're gay. And all these years I thought you had fancy someone of the same sex. What a fool I was.

Has anyone else had experience of this?

I think that, in general, men don't like to feel that their masculine nature is in question. This, of course, ties to being gay, which frankly pisses me off. I've known a lot of genuine fags (don't get mad, it's how they referred to themselves) in my life, and some of them are totally masculine; even in heels and makeup. I run with those kinds of people a lot, since I'm what has been, both lovingly and condecendingly referred to as a "half-dyke".
There are many men that think they are less man if they fancy men. This is dumb. One of the hardest-core, leather and tattoo type guys I ever knew was just flaming.
Of course, the whole "metrosexual" thing came along and made it a little more acceptable. But some stupid guys are still ansty about it. There might also be an insecurity, particularly in young men, that make them react more strongly to it than maybe they should. Which is also a little dumb.
As for girls going in on it, I don't know. I don't hang out with that kind of girl. if I say a guy is gay, it's because he is.

Thank you, PR, for starting another thread. That was actually my first order of business this morning, but as it has been taken care of *gentlemanly bow* I can just go ahead and post!

Yeah, it pisses me off, too. I am a fan of live and let live and that other people's opinions of you should not matter all that much. So what, you like looking fancy and well-dressed...that does not automatically make you gay. Cry at sad movies? Means you're human, nothing else. Personally, I think the metrosexual thing was created by aliens (sorry, silent nod to South Park). It takes more work for me to carry off that look than is worth trying.

Oh yes... let's ponder!

I have many male and female friends who are gay - I think it has a lot to do with how you are raised or socialised and you have to blame the media for that to some degree and the hang over of previous generations being worried about what their reputation is in a time when things like 'reputation' (whatever that means) mattered a lot more!

Having grown up in the theatre I have gay male friends who range from shy and very masculine to camp as a row of tents! My female gay friends are mostly very regular kinds of gals with whom I enjoy socialising, though I do know a couple of the militant feminist type with the cropped hair... I am very comfortable with my hetro-sexuality and am not concerned with how others choose to convey theirs...

The Uniting Church in Australia is going through an interesting time at the moment as it has affirmed the right of gay people to receive a calling into ministry and will ordain openly gay male and female ministers. In fact a few of my gay friends are also church friends...

So... uh, what was I saying... ramble...ramble... oh yeah - it comes down to the person making the comment and what motivates it - peer group pressure, ignorance or lack of balance in the sexuality of their friends...???

So endeth this ramble...

Whee, and now, an incredible anomaly, a SECOND POST (counting one tonight)!!!

Gay stuff, like Magdalena, even at the amateur level, we've got a few gay men in our troupe, and a couple of lesbians. Then again, it's high school, people talk about sex all the time, but 99% of us are still virgins, so... but anyways, yeah, I never use the term 'gay' as an expletive, I use it to describe the guys who are into other guys, cause thats what it means, and it shouldnt have the negative connotation that it does. And on the lesbian front, they're just lady folk who prefer other lady folk, they're perfectly normal, and rather sensible if you ask me. Never have figured out what women see in men.

All this talk in civics about gay marriage and civil unions

... the very idea of a constitutional amendment to religiously discriminate against a gorup of folk.... can you get any more unconstitutional than that?!

sorry, ignore the RWED element of that.

now i gotta find a political article on cnn in about 5 minutes before school. Urgh, hell week.

Hey one of my friends describes himself as a flaming hetero-sexual ( straight but profoundly flamboyant) and I'd second PR's manly gay guys comment as most of the gay men I know are really tough.
And on a side note ( as a theater/ballet person) I do not know how I would ever have gotten into some of those costumes without the assistance of my beloved gay guys. Women just don't have the upper body strngth it requires for some of those quick changes.
Teaching school I see a lot of the "don't want to seem gay" and it's partly a developing image concern and sadly partly a safty/survival concern. In junior high being different is not welcomed for the most part and being different sexually is, in some cases, dangerous ( look at Matthew Shephard) so many kids have serious and sometimes valid fears of attracting the wrath of peers ( who likely are having their own sexual confusion or have seriously flawed views due to bigoted parents)

You sound very together for one of such 'tender years'... I was much like you in high school coz I did school drama, other drama studies and local theatre work too... I think it is such a plus to realise at an early age that you can be friends with folk no matter whether they are young or old, 'straight' or 'gay', male or female... your life is so greatly enriched by those whom you call friends and that is a valuable lesson to learn in early life! Kudos to you!

MsG - did you dance!! I love the ballet - used to go to the Australian Ballet all the time & when I was studying at the National Theatre (Drama) the Ballet School sometimes shared our studios... quite a few of those ended up in the national company too (AB). I am in awe of ballet dancers... maybe that's why I'm in awe of Summer!

I was with RDT and I loved it more than breathing:) Had a bit of an accident which cut short my career, but I still love to watch. Summer is very good. Whenever I watch the fight scene in Serenity I enjoy watching her dance ( look at her face it's not fighting ,in her head it's just a dance)

I know what you mean - coming from a performance background I love to watch an actor's performance from different perspectives - that scene takes my breath away! I am so in awe now that I know your background! I'd have loved to see you dance! I never learned (except for specific musicals - general dance stuff & high school stuff) but I am just besotted with ballet as a discipline and a beautiful art form!

There is a video on you tube which shows Summer rehearsing that scene and it is just like that - a series of steps that she makes fluid and meaningful!

You're sweet Magda. Yes it's fun to watch a dance do a fight scene. I've not seen the making of, but I can tell by her face that she hears music in her head while she does the steps and I wouldn't be surprised if they piped in music while shooting to give her the beat of the movements. I was lousy at sword fights ( choreographed ones) unless I could hum.

Re the gay thing - I'm wondering why some men (present company of cool guys excluded of course!) get freaked about getting hit on by gay men. My theory is, these are the guys that are jerks about hitting on women when it's not welcome, and they figure men hitting on them will be similarly creepy and they don't know how to handle it.

Everyone think for a second about horse sports. Now think about english disciplines (dressage, hunters/jumpers/equitation, three day eventing). Now think of men riding in those disciplines. If you're like 90% of the American populace (for those of you who are American), you're thinking of gay men. And sadly, the stereotype fits. For some reason, riding english in America is synonymous with being gay. This doesn't hold true for other countries, though.

The only real reason I can see for being upset that people consider you to be homosexual would be the possible misunderstanding with someone you're interested in. If they think you're gay or their friends do, you may never get a chance with them. Other than that, I say get over it. I'm sure my extended family thinks I'm lesbian. Whatever. I've never brought anyone home to meet them because they just aren't friendly people.

well my husband has always considered getting hit on by a gay man quite the compliment, but I know he's in the minority on that one.

Rugbug -loved the rant, but yes I would drive you nuts. I tend to go for expedient over organized, which in the long run means I spend a great deal of time attempting to figure out where in the smack I put stuff.

Yeah, I can understand that. I can also understand maybe being a bit put out if you're not gay and someone of the same sex hits on you.

And I can understand how people can assume something and make a mistake. I've had more than a few people assume I must be gay since I adored the Tara character in 'Buffy' and was a huge fan of the Tara/Willow 'ship. Mind you, my unbridled lust for Xander usually gave me away on that score. And it also bothers me that liking a gay character makes you gay! I know Tara had a huge gay fanbase (I mean... duh!) but I don't like seeing her boxed into being "The Gay Character." She's a character. With all sorts of fans. Just like any other Buffy character.

Thank you because I found a place in Melbourne that has them in stock today - but I had already picked up the 'Serenity Official Visual Companion', the novel 'Serenity' of the film & the graphic novel 'Those left behind' all of which I had never laid eyes on 'in the flesh'! I was thinking of going back next week to add to my collection...

Actually I never leave one out of a case as a rule - that's probably why I have them all mixed up - at least they're safe, if not in the right place! At the moment in fact I have most of my belongings in storage and keep all my DVD's and CDs in carry cases - about 50 to a case and their original cases are in storage coz they take up the bulk. The exceptions are Serentiy and Firefly coz they should have cases of their own and it makes it easier for me to loan them to people (in theory - coz I haven't been able to bear to be parted from them since I got them...)

Good morning Imponderablers!

I always wanted a theme song. Stupid commercial stole my idea. I am thinking about a soundtrack for my fic. Kinda fits the way real life is. Sometimes you just hear a song in transit and then its in your head all day.

As for riding...
I was taught fairly young how to ride, shoot, and hide. Basic skills for a country kid. I can't quite understand the concept of how people never learned these skills.
I don't understand how an activity frequented by the manly nobles of England turned gay. Maybe it was the migration to America. Maybe alot of those trips were in the same spirit of 'Brokeback'.

Still stewin' over that damn movie. Not that I despise gays or anything, but I do refuse to ever see that movie.

Finished watching Lonesome Dove the other night, again. I always tear a little when Gus dies.

I understand the bonds between men can become a bit veiled by society's current views, but I hate when groups use certain aspect for their propaganda (Gay Superman, doped up Alice in Wonderland, Fox News).

MSG, that is, unfortunately, one of the bad things about society. People should be free to love who they want without having others look at them with raised eyebrows. While I am a supporter of age-blind love, I can tell you that I will probably be looking for someone closer to my own age from now on.

Less of a generation problem that way.

NVG - sorry you're a bit confuzzled... I'm not sure why you don't want to see Brokeback Mountain though - I thought it was beautifuly filmed and written and performed - but then again I will not judge you for not wanting to see it - one really has to want to give up an hour or two of one's life in the pursuit of movie goodiness!

Wish I'd learned to ride - lots of Australian films & TV shows call for it & it looks so liberating!

Honestly, for two reasons.

Reason 1: From what I am told the "love" scene really demonstrates alot of the ferocity between two men having sex. Just don't seem right to me. Might be good for other folks, just not me.

Reason 2: People said Hulk sucked. It was also a very beautiful movie. Not your run of the mill hero crap Hollywood squeezes out. It was a little too flashy in parts, but the emotion of a "hero" was well executed by Eric Bana.

I'd love to take up riding again, but I need to wait for the right animal. Think we'd discussed this before. Tryin' to find a large horse, dark in color.

I must admit to some envy related to English riders. Like dancing, it requires an incredible amount of grace and poise.
Something I tend to lack in most situations.

NV- I haven't seen it either, mostly 'cause I find romantic movies somewhat boring. I get being taught to ride and shoot, but why hide?? Is that hunting related hiding or something else?

Tristan- I'm totally with you on age blind love. I think you love a person and not the age/gender/religion/race :)

I do understand that aspect NVG - I really wasn't judging - just giving it my recommendation! Yes - it was a bit confronting - but no more so than the sex on the benchtop at the start of 'Fatal Attraction'

And of course you liked Eric Bana - he's from Melbourne & I have met him! He's really down to earth and a wonderful actor - used to do a lot of comedy around Melbourne and has a gorgeous wife and kids...

I'll send good vibes your way too - both for the 'wife' and the 'horse' ... maybe you'll find a really wonderful woman who trains horses and has a parent or sibling with mental health issues so isn't fazed by them...

There - I'm ready to tackle world peace now!

NV: I honestly wasn't impressed with Brokeback. But I'm not a huge Ang Lee fan to start with. His movies are just so...quiet...I think is how I would describe them. It's like everything takes place on a misty morning. That sense of just waking up you get at 5 am. Sort of that feel. Even the "rough parts" are quiet.

But, on top of that, I just didn't buy the love story. I don't know. Maybe the hype was too big, but the movie just didn't live up to what I thought it was going to be. If I was in the academy, it never would've gotten a nomination.

As for horses, find yourself a nice ranch bred QH...one with nice big feet and a decent head (not those bulldog lookin' things with the babydoll heads they are breeding for the halter ring. Those folks are just ruining a fantastic breed of horse)...in whatever color you desire.

And now I'm feeling all graceful and such, what with the riding english and all.

How anyone can think this is "sissy" is beyond me:

Rugbug- right with you! My sister competes in hunter/jumper and it's brutally hard and physically demanding. I think it's a judgement by clothing instance. The clothes are tailored, fitted, and elegant hence "gay". I've done hunter/jumper myself though now where near as good as my sis and it's really hard work. I'd say it's nearly as physically demanding as ballet and that is saying something!!

NV- a quarter horse would be nice. My sister had one when she was little and it was a great horse ( if somewhat mischievous). Her arabians were better suited to the hunter/jumper thing, and her quarter horse was much happier when she found a great trail rider to take the horse. Quarter horses love trails and long ride ( but I'm guessing you already know all this)

Hey FMF - glad you're back! I was wondering what you were up to! Younger man? mm-la-la!

I rode for a few years when I was a kid, and I love English riding! Not posting makes me feel sick. Maybe I'm too uptight for western, LOL!

Good pic rugbug! That scares the hell out of me, big jumps like that. I got to maybe 2 feet tall, and that was plenty!

Brokeback I just found so sad. I never want to see it again because it was wicked depressing. As for the sex, the first time was pretty ferocious, but I think they made of point of showing the second time being different - to show that two men can actually make love.

My husband is there with me, cause he's going through it, too. He's no longer the tough as nails Marine he was in his 20's - he aches bad after a doubleheader of softball. When he changes, I'm right there, changing too - and nearly every time, we're still on the same page.

Guess what I'm trying to say is relationships with people near to your own age don't have the generation gap problem/easing into another period of life problem.

Well, I think the reason english riding is for gay men only (in the U.S.) has a lot to do with the general public's impression that riding isn't hard. The horse does all the work, afterall. And while that is true if you're just trail riding or if you're on one of those 'rent-a-horse' rides, most people's experience, it isn't true of the sport. Riding is incredibly physical (although nowhere near ballet. MSG, you're just being kind) and MENTAL. Jumping isn't just about pointing your horse at the fence. All those courses ask "questions" of both horse and rider. Each type of fence needs to be approached differently and often, the distance between the fences are set up so you have to ride 'quietly' through the first and then forward to the next. And missing can be extremely dangerous. Having a 1200 lb animal flip over onto you doesn't bode well for your future.

Mal4Prez...I was jumping 2'6" to 2'9" before the breakage. Now I'm back to 2'.

I've got some anxiety issues to work through, but hope to get back in the game soon. I've never jumped much higher than that because I've always ridden young horses, old horses or no-talent horses. Now I've got a talented, nicely trained horse (although sometimes a tricky ride) so I'm crossing my fingers.

Here's another of the same rider/horse (Nick Skelton and Arko III). Horse wasn't suppose to jump the center...he was suppose to jump to either side, but he overruled the rider in this case:

(FYI: that jump was about 5' (6' is max for a triple bar) at the top of the actual jump and was maximum width of 5'6"...horse jumped much higher/wider than that
