Hello out there,

I saw Serenity - The Movie almost a fortnight ago, ordered the Series DVD and finished watching them (with commentary) last night. Today, not yet an hour ago, I ordered the "DTI" Fan DVD. I guess that makes me an awfully hooked Browncoat *g*.

This was a series which we -my wife and I- would have watched. That might or might not sound silly to you, but the most fierce critic I know happends to be my wife. We would have loved to follow the adventures of the Crew, their coming together, more development of the Reavers, etc.. But we will never know. Or probably never know.

What makes me most sad is the fact that I got to know the Series three years after it was canceled. We got to know it (Series) through the Movie as written above. To late to do anything at all to change or help change something.

I bow to the creative mind of Joss, the "friendly fighting" from the fans to get Firefly continuing.
And -no hitting and please- I don't see that happening. Firefly -as we got to know it/them in the Series- is dead. If (and hopefully when) Universal will produce another Movie it won't be the same as with the whole nine people crew.

Right now I seriously doubt about a sequel. If what I gather from the internet browsing is correct, the Serenity Movie cost $39 millions ... and Universal is -last week- 0.2 million short of getting a zero round... means cost effective zero income.

True, the Movie IS a labour of love, a dedication from fans to their Firefly and the respect and love from a Writer/Director to his story, his crew his fans.

The movie tells the story. It ties a lot of loose ends together. True we still don't know who the blue hands are, we don't know just how mighty Blue Sun is, and the Reavers never had a chance to get properly developed. You also would have to integrate new villains or contractors (wasn't one of the corpses the Operative showed Mal after Haven Badger?)
Wash is dead. So is Book. Sad but you *could* hire a new pilot, there *could* be a new sheperd... even if those wouldn't have the same apeal right at first like the old ones (Imagine Zoe reacting to a new hired pilot having his hands on the latex Dinos all over cockpit..).

With all those facts in mind I clearly suspect Joss wanted to bring his baby to rest. In Style. Firefly deserved better. We all know it. We all hoped for it. I won't stress it.

I will read fanfictions here, write some of them myself (a novum *lol*). I don't think I'll see a Firefly II TV Series. BUT ... If it should happen (DoneTheImpossible2).... I won't mind. I won't mind at all. Dong ma?

You can't take the sky from me ;-)
But, ...ya, ...well you did !!

Don't give up hope. It will never be a continuation of the original series in quite the same way - but it is possible in future movies there will be flashbacks so that all the characters we know are there. As for it continuing - I think it's quite possible. Serenity didn't do amazingly at the box office - it nearly broke even, and that isn't bad going. It was about what was expected. But the DVD sales have been very high - for both Firefly and Serenity - which is where the profit is being made which hopefully will allow another film to be made.
I don't see there being a new pilot - the end of the film implies that River will take over that position. And Shepard Book was a passenger, not a part of the crew. It is of course possible they take on more passengers later, but I think future films will focus just on those left.

Goodmorning JAYLUX and welcome to the boat,

Now don't be driving the last nail in the coffin just yet.Your story is a sad one but it is average. There are thousands of browncoats and thousands more to be made. The smart powers that be know when theres a money maker in sight. If they don't they won't be in power for long.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

If you really believe that, you don't know Hollywood. Recent news says that Sony/MGM has just greenlit a sequel to Into the Blue, which opened on the same day as Serenity last year. It's production cost is reported to be $50 million, but it grossed less than $18.5 million domestically, $41.6 mil worldwide. I would not doubt dvd sales played a part in that decision. I'm sure many a man purchased or rented the dvd to see Alba in a bikini but would never have admitted to wanting to see it in the theater.

Contrast that with Serenity, which at least came closer to breaking even for Universal, plus the great dvd sales of not only the movie but continued sales of the series, with an ever increasing fanbase, evident most recently at DragonCon. This is the type of activity that studios pay attention to.

I have generally considered myself to be a realist, most people say I am a pessimist. Yet I feel extremely confident we will see a Serenity sequel, or possible a Sci-Fi Channel mini-series within three years time. The only reason it will take that long is becuase of Joss' commitments to Wonder Woman and Goners, although I wouldn't be surprised if Goners is put on hold in favor of Serenity.

DONCOAT

Welcome, JayLux! Glad you found us, and glad to have you with us.

Don't give up hope! We're all following our Captain's orders to hold until he gets back.

We like to greet new Browncoats by handing them their very own (virtual) 'coat to keep them warm while they're holding the line. FollowMal has the franchise on brand-new coats with that just-tanned smell, but if she's busy it may take her awhile to get around to all the new folks.

If you'd like, you're welcome to one of my patched-up, brushed-off, recycled coats. Probably won't fit quite as well, and there could be stains, but it's enough (I hope). Just drop it off in the storeroom when you're done with it.

Hope you enjoy life among this crazy crew. Post a lot and tell us how you discovered the 'verse. There's almost always problematic food in the freezer.

Welcome to our home in the internet 'verse, JayLux! it's always a pleasure welcoming new folks to the place.

Please let me offer you an irish whiskey to sip if you're so inclined.

My, but you do seem to be making up for lost time, there. Nothin' wrong with that! Actually there's everything right with it.

So, come on in and make yourself at home.

Oh, and as someone kindly pointed out, there were a few comics that are available as a graphic novel ("Those Left Behind") from darkhorse Comics with more to be in the works, or so Da Man (Joss) told us earlier this year. Yea!

Hi Back, And don't believe what you read in the tabloid type sites..

Serenity cost AN ESTIMATED 38.6 Mil (I've seen some sites say As High as 40-45 Mil.. they're sure loose with the "Mils" when "Rounding"... Google it and look at all the wild numbers thrown around ;) INCLUDING advertising budget, etc.. 38.6Mil GROSS PREDICTION... Meaning if they made 38.6 mil back, they are in profit territory (so that number includes profit the Financiers expected to make back from their investment, whatever that REALLY was)

It was projected to make 27 mil at the box-office, with the rest being made up in DVD sales... It had actually made 32Mil at the box office The last time I checked (Which has been a while), so your number of 38.8Mil May be what the box-office receipts are at this point.. which is MUCH higher than the Box Office estimate of 27 mil (The business plan), and DVD sales bumped it over the top of cost recovery easily.

You have to understand that even the 38.6 mil is an "Estimate" that Universal projected only a 1/4 way into the movie, (It's a investment/tax thing), so no one knows how much it REALLY cost to make and advertise.

Point being, they projected a 27 mil return from Box Office receipts, and Universal already said it's gone "Gone into the black" re: box office receipts (But hasn't said exactly how much it's made). The rest that was "supposed to be made up with DVD sales" has easily tipped it over into the Pure profit category.

It's kinda like General Electric "Predicting" they'll make 500 Mil next year, and only making 400 mil, and then saying "They took a loss of 100 mil".. it's only a loss on paper, they didn't actually lose any "Real" money.

Serenity is (Supposedly) in the black at the box office, and well above expected returns in DVD sales.

Bottom line, Universal is making money off of it.

Greetings and hello all

a brown coat ... just for me ... I feel cozy and warm. Thank you.... It's perhaps a bit tight about the shoulders and...oops...I hope you don't mind if you get it back mended.
*g*

All of you are right. I don't know Hollywood at all. So the whole might or might not happen. Incidentally I followed the DragonCon thread -yes, AFTER I posted this thread- and I stumbled and heard some facts, rumors etc.. which I didn't know before. I won't make a silly *** of myself again. Promise.

What I *DO* know is : The movie made the series known and since I followed the whole a bit more closely, I do see the possibility I wrote too hastily (hence the silly *** *g*).

Right now I do hope for a second movie and (and that seems to be the slightest problem) a HUGE reaction at fancons which might very well influence Universal to try their hand at a second series. (Joss has the rights back, right? F*x hasn't anything to say at all, yes??)

A darn ... why don't we have some cons here? Hum ... I guess I will have to browse a bit more thoroughly right here around. Perhaps there are some more browncoats to be rallied.

Thank you much for the welcome

VERSEEXPLORER

Welcome aboard.

Yep, Joss has the rights and the Fux are out. Did you read the article from Joss on August 25th? He was talking about Wonder Woman and Goners, and then at the end he said:

Quote:

Some other little irons in the fire, when they're hot I'll pull 'em out and brand you. Keep the faith, spread the love, take the red pill, smell the coffee, fight the power, do the hustle, mow the lawn, eat the rich, Mott the Hoople, kick the can, bag the toads and If They Move, Kill 'Em. xoxo -j.

It's enough to give us hope, and the positive reports from Dragon*con showed that our numbers are growing.

Quote:

why don't we have some cons here? Hum ...

Where are you? Let us know the country and/or state, and someone will come by to tell you what's going on in your area.

Ahoy, JayLux! You're #22410.
It's right shiny to have you here(what took you
so long?) and I must say that coat looks better
than you think.

Please have a dish of strawberries and cream, and
this Mudder's Milk chaser.

We'd be pleased if you'd gather with us to question
the buffet. Fresh batch of Wife Soup just on the
simmer; cheese heating up. Shimmerwine in the
fountain at the aft end of the table. Ice planets
in the cooler, bottom shelf, four flavors.

I've been slightly acquainted with entertainment
industry accounting and those who do the auditing thereof.
Trust me: they are most likely the people who
invented the phrase "creative accounting." It's
unlikely you'll ever know more than they want you
to know about the $ from Serenity. ::-)

Spread the signal far and wide. Bring in those
who haven't experienced the 'Verse. The more of
us there are in evidence, the more likely we'll
see our Big Damn Heroes again.

9/20 Happy Birthday, Captain Mal!!
9/24 Ditto, TCM!!!
9/30 Happy AnniVersary, BDM!!!!
