Sorry if this has already posted, I checked the most recent threads list and nothing was on it.

Yesterday, it was announced, to the surprise of many, that Joss Whedon would be taking over the writing of the comic series Runaways, after its creators leave the title in 2007.
Announcement: http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.628

Runaways is the story of a group of kids who discover their parents are supervillains. Joss Whedon has been a big fan of the series (and even had a letter published in the letter columns), and the creator, Brian K. Vaughan, is also a fan of Whedon (Whedon himself is mentioned in the series at least once).

I've put up a quick little primer on the comic series on my livejournal, here, for those who are considering picking it up when Whedon starts:

Wait... he's still writing Astonishing X-Men, isn't he? Will this start when that run ends?

It probably will start at around the same time as his Astonishing run ends (there are about 8 issues of Astonishing left, although the last 6 are supposed to be monthly), but don't blame Runaways for that - it was going to end anyway, and Whedon's said when he heard Runaways was available he had to take stock and decide if he could fit another book in, but he _really_ wanted to do it, so he decided he would.

I *really* can't wait to see what he does with Runaways. His X-men run has been brilliant. Especially the way he writes Wolverine.

He'll miss Kitty though. Apparently he had a big crush on her when he was a teenager. Must have been a real kick to finally write her.

Sorry as much as like Whedon, Vaughan is an incredible writer. I'm more upset that he won't be doing it.

Although it does mean BKV will be on something else, which does excite me, since Y:TLM is also coming to its conclusion.

I'll probably still pick up Runaways, but it won't be the same (although I do know Joss is a huge fan of the series since he's had letters printed in the back of some Run isssues). :(

Me, I'm still awaiting a stable timeline for Wintermen. :(

I'm happy for Joss and comic book fans, but I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. This must be one of the "irons in the fire" he hinted about in one of his recent posts at whedonesque.com. Which means nothing to hang my Firefly hopes on :(

Speaking of Joss comics, before I shell out, is it worthwhile for non-comic readers to get the Serenity comic? I tried reading a Joss comic -- Fray -- that's available at my public library, and I just don't have the vocabulary to enjoy it. It took me a lot of time to figure out who was speaking, and to figure out if I was supposed to go to the next panel down or across at any given time, and I kept reading the text only and getting mystified before I realized I had skipped looking at the pictures again. As a result, what I got out of the experience was pretty thin.

But it's been at least a month since I watched the BDM. Maybe I'll do that tonight...

I haven't read Fray, but I have read the Serenity comics. I didn't have any trouble following the sequence. It's in a pretty straightforward, traditional format (mostly six panels per page with a few splash pages and double-size panels).

If I have a complaint, it's that the comics (or the graphic novel, same thing in different format) just don't cover much ground. I'd say a single 1-hour episode of Firefly had more going on than the whole comic series.

But it's canon, and has more than a few worthwhile things in it. I'd pretty much call it required reading for the dedicated Browncoat.

I'd pretty much agree with the complaint about the Serenity comic. Also, even though it was co-written by Joss Whedon, I suspect the other guy did more of the work, because the dialog just didn't have quite the same Firefly zip.

For those interested, Joss Whedon's first issue of Runaways (which is Runaways #25), came out yesterday. Any thoughts on it? I thought it was pretty good.
