So on one of the Forsaken threads they were talking about what we picture each other looking like.
James, I picture you tall ,dark haired ,intense eyes.
Penguin, since I don't know you well, I will say I think of Opus, my favorite penguin.

LA: You've got it about half right. I'm not tall, barely even reaching 6' in a good pair of shoes, and my eyes aren't exactly intense. I got them from my great grandmother, if that's any sort of descriptive. I am darker than a tar pit filled with burnt food and used engine oil, though. Not the skin, but the everything else.

I have enormous problems figuring out what anybody looks like without seeing them. It's for the same reason I can't play the hypothetical game: I'm not good assigning characteristics in absence of fact. The only reason I know what half the people on the Imponderables threads look like is because the've posted their pictures way back in the day.

On the last rhread ther was lots of talk of Paganism and such. I was wondering about that. Religiously I am nothing, not an athiest or anything, just don't really follow anything. Organized religions do usually bug me though and I have looked into Wicca and what not a little. Actually, I unwittingly converted my Baptist best friend to Wicca (much to the dismay of her parents) while looking into some material on the subject.

I was liking the sound of Pagan but not Wiccan. Is that basically just following your own path? Anyway, I was just wondering if you all could point me in the direction of some good info and material and such.

Hello Kayna:

I don't belong to any formal religion my ownself.
Have my private beliefs and they work for me. According to my dictionary that makes me a pagan.

I once had a friend who was a Druid. You may want to look that up. I don't know where term wicca came from, since he never mentioned it. It could originate from this faith. There are have so many new religions starting up that they borrow words from each other, so the term wicca could be used by several religions.

Penguin, thanks for the new Imponderable thread. I think it was LittleAlbatross that mentioned what we imagine others look like. I have to admit that I picture you as Kevin Smith's Silent Bob. You add few words, and when you do write something, it is very meaningful if not profound. Of course the little penguins always make me laugh. Now I am hoping that you are taking this as a compliment because I think Kevin Smith is right under Joss as a writer/director, and I think Silent Bob is right there under Wash.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I have a friend who is both Wiccan and Pagan. A Wiccan, by her definition, is one who has been in a coven and gone through a "Wiccaning". Do not ask me exactly what that is because I haven't had it and I don't know. Wiccans are more structured and I suppose more devout. She is constantly doing rituals, whereas I only do them if I have great need, and they are not very elaborate. She is always writing in her Book of Shadows, and has several full ones, while I haven't even filled my first one. Not sure what all she writes in there. But she is also slightly Pagan because, other than Paganism and Wicca being very close to the same thing, she is not in the coven anymore and she is a Kitchen Witch. She cooks her spells, basically. And her cooking is magic. This is a solitary thing, but I suppose she could be a solitary Wiccan now, too.
Lord and Lady, this is tricky to explain, isn't it? OK, well me, I'm a Pagan Buddhist; I follow as many teachings as I can from Buddhism and draw from them, but I also worship the earth, nature, and, as I am a fire witch, fire. Almost everyone has an element that they have some affinity with, and a witch can focus on and at times control that element. It's also usually vital to the success of his or her spells to involve that element in some way. I'm glad I'm not an earth witch, because that would mean a lot hunting around for places to do rituals outdoors. Or maybe I'm assuming that would be important.
Anyway, my belief system is taylored to me, drawing from everything I've ever seen or done or read, everything that makes some kind of sense to me and everything that seems the most important.
In both Buddhism and Wicca, the body is the personal temple, and is sacred. I think that's where my views on the spiritual aspect of sex must come from. Experience only confirmed what I already pretty much believed.
Fun fact, the Oxford English dictionary defines a "Pagan" as anyone who is a follower of a non-Abrahamic religion. I think this should really be changed, but it's kind of fun to take my Buddhism, Druidism, Egyptian studies, Shamanism, and actual Wicca and Paganism and just put them under a single heading. But I still think the definition should be changed, because it also defines it as "A hedonist" which is entirely innaccurate.
Whew!

LA - I will now imagine you as being exactly like Lydia - I loved that film when it came out - haven't seen it for years though! Do you do her drawl too...?

Tristan - did I ever tell you that I thought you were a middle aged Englishman before I saw your photos in the costume thread - actually I revised that before then as I got to know your personality on the thread - but initially that is how I'd imagined you!! LOL!!

Phoenix Rose looks exactly like I imagined her - though the photoshop image of her helped a little!

Woo, after an hour n something of reading, i've finally caught up. Good to be back.

First off, to Chris... I just wanna say thanks for participating and being informative and civil. Please dont read into that as sarcasm, it's a complement.

Anyhoo... been really busy with seemingly nothing... in another show, at least this one we wont have to buy the rights or anything, as we're sorta workshopping-writing it. I have a rediculous ton of homework... and I've got college apps that I probably should be doing hanging around my neck like a weight.
On the bright side, I've been writing some poems n stuff, and our creative writing club is doing a poetry reading thing at a cafe next friday. I'm looking forward to it. Wrote a poem on Siddhartha (Hesse) for class, almost making fun of the other "enlightenment blah blah river blah" poems I expected to, and did find. People liked it, made me happy.

Enough about my selfishness! No, wait! I went to the Rennaissance Fair today! and I wore my jayne hat, and got two of the people who ran stores who complemented me on its shinyness. Love the hat.

So enough of my stories... but arg, I have little to say on the subject of breakups.

Keep flying everyone.

Let me rephrase my earlier posts. Penguin is a penguin who just happens to have a few Silent Bob characteristics.

Magda,
You are too sweet. I believe I am a bit older than you. If you don't know what I look like, it tells me you haven't gone on the BigDamnThankYou site to vote for me. Hee-hee! If you go to Wash and the map, I'm in the US, and since it's alphabetical, I'm on top from Arizona. While you're there, you could vote for me. Mine is very low tech, but I'd appreciate a 3 star (or a 4 if you are feeling kind).

While you're there don't forget to vote for Penguins, he's from the Mythical Land of Iowa.

If for any reason you can't get the map to set up, you can find me on the September 10th pics.

I remember what I wanted to say. On the subject of Harry Potter and reading.

So here's my imponderable... For my english class, I need to read 2:30 hours a week of books. Annoyingly, i read way more than that in textbooks, but that doesnt count. Because of the previous show, I'm horribly behind for this month. I need 8:35 hours to get an A, gotta do that by next friday, the end of the month. Argh. So my issue is, for all that I love storytelling, and stories, and i want to be a writer of them, I don't really like to read casually, I don't really have time to. And of course rule one for writers supposedly is to read like crazy. So that scares me. Blarg. Stupid reading.

The reason writers should read like crazy is so they can see how the language should be put together, so they can learn how to effectively write. And you don't want anything you write to read like a textbook, do you?
You should get the Visual Companion and the Official Companion and read the scripts; it's fun to see how they're laid out!

Hey Tristan - good night!

Whitefall - I'd love to hear about the 'RenFaire' too - I have heard about them but I don't believe we have anything quite like them here in Australia... Did you dress up? (other than the Jayne hat?....mmmmmm Jayne!) BTW -I would read Harry Potter actually, coz it's impossible to put down, fun and you'll be able to talk to people from 6-year-olds - grandparents about it! (My nieces gave the first book to my Mother for Mother's Day!!)

VerseExplorer - I tried to get into the BigDamnedThankyou site a few days ago - but this computer is not being kind and I couldn't get far - I will, however try again now that I have a terrific reason to do so! I don't think you are older than me though - I'm 39! (I just think I'm 28!!)

Hey GPR - you so should put something in - even if I have yet to work out what it's all about! You have the shiniest of pictures and I'd love to see others enjoying them too! and thanks for noticing!!

Who else is about beside the truly Shiney Penguin! You are still my hero Penguin! Wish Iowa wasn't mythical... *sigh*

Ah - so am I supposed to think of an imponderable...? Hmmmmmm... how is it that fashions I thought we'd seen the back of are coming back again *shudders* I saw young girls in clothes that resembled what we wore in the 80s... but I'm sure we didn't look that rediculous!!

Edit: Sorry Kayna - I was just re-reading what you wrote and I was telling someone about how much I love the friends i have here - I am a Christian, involved in the Uniting Church of Australia (of a Presbyterian/Methodist background) and I love hearing aobut the empowering aspects of Wiccan, Pagan and other religions... I am surprised at the deifinition PR found coz I always thought Pagan was an Earth/Life-cycle based religion... many Christian traditions were adapted from the Pagan in order to make a soft transition when people were converted in the days of the early church! ... not sure about Republicans though (and before anyone takes that seriously - I am joking!!!)

love you - Magda x x x

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

The 80s have been slowly creeping back into fashion. Some of it's pretty funky and cool, but the kitchy jewelry should really not be allowed!
Now if only a bit of 80s would creep back into music. I'm tired of emo and indie and electric and bubblegum and a great overabundance of rap. Long live rock!

I just realized something strange. I've had two major 'relationships' end in the last year, one my former best friend, and one my lover, and before they ended I kept having the same thought about both people: "You don't send me flowers anymore." This made no sense to me, as I've never gotten flowers from anyone but my dad. It kind of meant "You don't really give me a lot of your time, energy, or attention anymore" but that's not the specific thought I had, it was a cutesy thought about flowers instead. And I didn't think it meant much, really, and certainly never said it to them when I had the urge to because I knew I would get a blank look...
I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Just odd what thoughts indicated, in retrospect, that there was a real problem.
I'm babbling like a moonbrain.

*edit* You're very right about what Paganism actually is, jie-jie, that is why the definition should be changed. And (not to offend anyone *gasp*) you would be hard-pressed to find a Christian Holiday that didn't have roots in Pagan Holidays. Even Valentine's day has a lot more to do with Beltaine than it has to do with a massacre, dontcha know.
I think the definition is what it is because of the campaign to undermine Goddess and Earth worship in the long long ago. A 'Pagan' came to mean a 'heathen' which then went on to encompass everything else, even Buddhism. Anyone not Christian was a heretic and worthy of burning, torture, or hanging.
Actually, let's not talk about that, ok? It just depresses me

WHITEFALL

Btw Magda, I have read Harry Potter, just not recently, and I've just not found time for HBP.

As for Renn faires... I'm sure Tristan could explain them better than I, but yeah, they are like a carnival/amusement park (ie, every costs a ton, but admission is much less than anything like great america) in that it's sorta open. What I like about them is people are so darned happy: it reminds me of thespian festival, so I wore my hat.

No, I was not in costume, cause if you'll all remember my debate last week about whether to go to strike for the show or this SAT prep class... well, I went to the class last week, and I went again this week, so while the Renn faire was actually a thespian club field trip, I wasnt going with the school.... i was what you might call an independant. My and my mother drove down. Didnt really have time to go for a costume or anything. Anyhoos, met up with friendly folk, though there was a surprising amount of shopping....

Anyhoo back to what you do: it's like a combination of themed, low budget amusement park and flea market. Just as there are carnival-sort of games to waste money on, you've also got artists, and even metal smiths n such. What you buy there is of decent quality: overpriced, but not cheaply made to gouge you. No reciepts or cash registers except in the more official stores (where you buy ye olde official Renn faire merchandise), but it's still good.

The whole mood is, well Rennaissance Faire, what it is is stereotypes, i wont deny that. Every stereotype about irish, english, american, french, etc culture from the past millenia is basically good. Not a bad thing: irish dancing/singing, real (though at least some of it must be choreographed) jousting on horseback, that sort of thing. It can move around, but the NorCal one tends to be in farmland with some trees, and the ground is covered in hay, as if the world's supply of hay was dragged over the place and a lot got left over. Dare I call it rustic.

One thing i gotta mention tho, people are so into having fun and talking in a manner that ultimately owes more to shakespeare than what is generally considered the renaissance, people are just happier and nicer kinda. Not sure how to explain, but afterwards i went to buy a book and barnes n noble, and it was jarring not seeing everyone smiling and trying to have a good time.

And one last thing: the signs in the parking lot in front of the entrance read

NO OUTSIDE ALCHOHOL ALLOWED.

"But, these strong women characters?"

"Why aren't you asking 100 other guys why they don't write strong women characters?" -Joss Whedon.

"We take all the money we got saved right now, we could maybe buy a moderately sized gerbil." -Mal

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

aawwwww... Don't be depressed Mei Mei - I think it's wonderful that we share these things - and if I were to continue this conversation I would have to say that I know what you mean about the church-history being about killing/supressing the Godess/Earth of older religions, but I also think that by us knowing those facts, we are ensuring that we are not doomed to repeat it! (makes sense?)I'd also say "Don't get me started on why the Bible is full of sexist garbage just because of the period in shich it was written and the audience for whom it was written - And you really do not want me to mention that Jesus had several female disciples who barely get a mention - and that I am all for the empowerment of the 'Godess' because I truly feel Mary Magdalene has a much greater role in Christianity than (not to offend anyone *gasp*) Jesus mother Mary!!

...and I hope I'm still alive when someone finds a complete copy of Mary Magdalene's gospel and it is published and studied 'coz that is gonna rock the world!!!

But since you asked - *hugs GPR* - I will not mention any of that... I love my Mei Mei too much - and I vehemently agree with you too!

Is it just me or did anyone else get out their copy of Duran Duran after all this talk of the '80s?

...no?

...it's just me then...

Edit: Whitefall! -Thanks so much for that awesome description - Tristan has mentioned things but it's nice to have your overall description so soon after the event! It sounds like something I would love!! I am so into Medieval things - and adore Shakespeare... have done a fair bit of his work in my time too... I'm a trained actor as well so I would be in my element! I love your description of the mood too... also sounds like me!! (see above for more details!!)

Penguin...? You give PR flowers, but not me?

Thank you, Penguin!

Yeah, we've talked about Mary's role as the Goddess to Jesus's God, right? I'm sure we have. See how much got edited out, though? That's a huge problem I have with the bible. Stupid council of nicea. Stupid sexist people. Stupid mistranslations.
I like the Gnostic Christianity. I feel like it's taken all the teachings, and maybe even the intended meaning, rather than all the dogma.
See, I don't mind talking about that kind of thing, I just don't like to think of how many people died or lived miserably. Comparitively, we live in such enlightened times as to blow my mind!
I love being able to have a discussion like this, without any mud-slinging. What a nice and refreshing change! I knew it could be done! (and has been before, just seems like a long while.) Finding a Christain who agrees with me so much, well, that's just proof that the truth crosses all lines whenever it gets a doorway. Gives me all kinds of hope. You're the bestest jie-jie!

And no Duran Duran, as I'm more a Bon Jovi girl Wish I had a player here! Hope the radio will play some good hair metal.

Whitefall, you didn't mention all the acts! I love watching the acts and performers at RenFaires. Been so long since I went to one, though.

Magdalena,
So sorry to hear that you can't get on the BigDamnThankYou site. I know you would love it. I did know that you are 39, and that is why I said I was a bit older than you. I don't think I look my age, I definitely don't feel my age, and I must admit I never act my age. It is hard to tell a person's age when all you see is the typed words.

Aaaaah, Penguin, no kiss for me? Is it my connection to YoSaffBridge that makes you hesitate?

Ooops, a bit too bold. I do believe Saffron was channeling through me.

Oh Sass, don't beat yourself up! I truley know how depressing it is to want to feel attracted to a lovely guy who is into me but to just not feel that spark. At least you're sensible enough to be honest with him and yourself. I've been down a baaaad road before. Much pain was caused and I felt really guilty.
