Oh and we were pondering whether having a same gender school helps you learn. In other words, would you have done better or did you do better because you went to an all girls or all boys school?

Right now I'm just so thrilled. I have a computer program that signals using wav files 10 times per period as part of a discipline thing and I found great firefly wavs so all day long I can hear Mal or Wash or Jayne say stuff:)

I have to use wav files under 30K so it's short stuff like " did he just go crazy and then fall asleep?"
Basically it works like this- I have tiny squares that say yes( green) and no(red) and each time the wav file sounds I look for target behaviors like being on task or sitting quietly and if the students are doing it I put a yes into the jar. If they aren't, I put a no in. At the end of the period, I shake up the jar and draw and if I draw a yes they get a reward and if I draw a no, they get nothing. So it's visual and a good way to get a percentage of on task time for the class as well as rewarding them for behaving.

Mornin',

Same gender school? I think it is beneficial for academics (and probably for things like the teen pregnancy rate) but there's a lot that is missing like learning how to deal with the opposite sex.

Teacher gender? I couldn't care less. I had problems with a number of male teachers, but mostly because I think they couldn't handle being challenged at all. It was a threat to their leadership...they were right and there was no two ways about it.

Okay CMH: my answer for you:

Supressing human emotion to the point of it almost not existing decreases your humanity and your understanding of others. We are meant to feel things. We are meant to be emotional and to need support. The truly strong recognize that and seek help and support during the trying times in life.

By supressing emotion, you are, in effect, making yourself an island. Barren, desolate and alone. You may have control of your emotions to the nth degree, but you do so at the detriment of social interaction. If you don't let yourself care, others will not want to interact with you. Who can relate to a robot?

The true strength with emotions is learning to respond to them appropriately. If you're angry, it is NOT good for you to suppress it (can lead to all kinds of mental and physical health issues), but neither is it acceptable to act out. Maybe removing yourself from the situation is the best answer. Or going for a run, or having a punching bag set up in the garage so you can hit something if you have to. Or channeling anger to enact a positive change in a situation.

That is how "weak" emotions lead us to be better, stronger people. Acknowledging them, accepting them, and using them for our benefit AND the benefit of others.

Something just got me pondering, and if the subject's come up before I apologise because this is a big thread and I don't get in here as much as I would like.

Anyway, I was wondering in regards to both sexes (and I appreciate that this question is biased to those who have a few more years on the clock) whether people's 'types' stay the same or whether they've changed over time.

For example, I've noticed that in the last five years or so, from a purely physical standpoint (shallow, I know, I'm talking fantasy here, not reality) I've suddenly got interested in big fairly muscley men. Not in a huge, I can't be with this person anymore because his biceps aren’t bigger than my head way. Just, these days, when I do any low grade leching it tends to be directed at Vin Diesel or dare I say it, Adam Baldwin. Not exclusively, but there is a definite trend. Where as when I was younger I liked the more thin and intense type.

Just wondering if other women's tastes have changed and whether the same is true for men.

Just plain curious really.

Oh, Pony, I agree with you. I've always liked smart, intense men.

And then there's Jayne.

What's up with that?

BTW, a few more years on the clock? Cheeky mare. (as it were )

Same sex school - I fought not to be sent to one, because I had a horrible time in my teens, not being a girly girl. (I've always had a strong self-image, but it has erred towards sci-fi, books guitar bands and scary-ass 'boy's' stuff - being in an environment consisting of pop music, hairspray and make-up, and the joy of attendant body dismorphia - woooh. Not.) I can see why some lessons would benefit from being segregated, but otherwise, I don't think it prepares you for society very well.

I was so upset when I read about so many of you and having to take mediction - I had no idea, to me you are all such strong people, I never would have guessed. *hugs*

Umm, whitefall, what is homecoming? (Britishness strikes again!)

If I had had to go to an all girls school, I think I would die! I can only stomach large goups of girls in very, very small doses, or if they're all very quiet, (such as sunday, when I was at my friends house, and me and a load of random girls I've never met were all brought together by our love of Johnny Depp, in From Hell). I cannot function properly without male friends.
Teaching style is everything. of the 4 male teachers I have at the moment, one is nice but hopeless, one is a bigheaded , and one (the oldest) is the coolest guy ever, best maths teacher I've had. the 4th is new, so I can't comment, His classes are quite embarrasing, as most of the other girls have crushes on him and laugh at everything he says. Once again, i am sat with the boys, one eyebrow raised! So far, the ones who don't hang on his every word have been pretty much ignored.

My tastes have definately changed, I'm now a lot less shallow, though I still lean towards older guys.

I wouldn't have wanted to go to an all-girls school. When it comes to taunting and teasing, girls are cruel. I would have had even more issues than I did (and I was in the principal or counselor's office every two weeks or so in school. I did not play well with others. More specifically, I did not play well with idiots.)
I can't say I really have a 'type'. Every time I've tried to come up with my 'type' I'll end up being totally into someone who doesn't fit it.

I'm not sure that would change between same sex and mixed schools? There was plenty of hairspray, pop music, make-up and body dismorphia at my school. I would think moreso than at an all girl's school where you aren't vying for the attention of the quarterback or the star actor or whatever turns you on. Boys seem to bring out the competitive side in girls, whether they mean to or not. Who's the prettiest, the nicest, the easiest, has the best body, etc.

Type: Yeah, I've got one and it has stayed pretty specific. Dark hair, light eyes, thin-ish with some muscles. like this:

Actually, he's even a little more muscly than I like.

Magda...you know him? He's Australian and just adorable.

I'm not into the Jayne type. To me that is muscle covered in fat. Now, in the real world, that's fine because who's perfect? But if I'm going to choose someone to drool over, I get to decide what is good and bad. (Another example, I never though NF was all that attractive based on physique alone. Too much pudge...although not so much in Serenity where he had slimmed down).

God, I'm shallow, aren't I?

Homecoming is an event in the fall where alumni of the school come back and celebrate the school and what it did for them. ( well in theory) mostly it's just one more excuse to have a pep rally ( cheer leaders perform and whip the crowd into a frenzy of we are the greatest school ever)and a dance:)

Hmm - hadn't thought of the competitive /girly girl issues. What about the guys though. Would an all male school make you more or less competative?

Well, the all girls Catholic sisters-of-no-mercy school I went to was incredibly vicious at times. Gossip, rumour, people not talking to people on account of what people said to people behind people's backs, all kinds of silliness. I was actually happy that I wasn't popular as I got to stay well out of it most of the time, but even the smaller crowd I hung around with could get really bitchy. I think it's what leads to my low bitching tolerance today - I absolutely hate it when people are gossiping about someone else behind their back. It drives me nuts.

That being said, I doubt having boys around would have made any difference. It just would have lead to all the girls getting jealous over them instead. And girls do learn better in single sex schools.

Had you not included a definition, I wouldn't have known what a pep rally is either. We don't have cheerleaders here, and its a generally accepted fact that everyone hates the school.

The only way I would learn better is if there were no immature idiots in my classes, both boys and girls, so I don't think I would learn better at an all girls, I would probably be immensley unhappy, even more so than I am at this school.
27 weeks until I can get out of this hellhole.

I'm sure he will. They are soulmates. The problem is that she hurt him worse than anyone ever has. That's a tough trait to handle in a person you're trying to love. I do like how the Robyn and Ted thing is going though. They are slipping in all the points for why the two of them won't make it. She's a gun enthusiast (which he hates), she says she can drift out of love in an instant, they were bickering pretty intensly over the lily thing briefly. That relationship is going down in flames.

Oh and about all boys school and competition. Depends on what level we're talking here. Gradeschool/highschool probably more competative. College and beyond probably less competative more cooperative.

I think that I've made it clear that my intention is to control and not suppress. A person can know what he's feeling without having to express it. If I'm remembering correctly, the main point of all this was in relation to pain. It is possible to be aware of injury and feel the infliction of it without showing it on your face or needing aid from anesthetics and pain relievers, and I believe that it is not only healthier to do so, but is also evidence of a truly superior mind.

Of course, like the topic of discussion, this type of control can be spread to other things, like emotions. A person can feel love without having to express it, or be humored without having to laugh.

Likewise, he can face demise without expressing fear.

I'll reiterate once more since my original point frequently seems to be lost in my ramblings: I am not aiming to suppress, only control, and control is never a bad thing.

CMH- It is in certain aspects. Like I said, being human after using such control on the self can be difficult. At the same time parts of the "mind" and "heart" seem to gain a flat spot. Not something most folks should experience.

As for facing demise without fear...
Unless you are channeling from the other side I do not see the absolute in your point of view.

If this is the path you've chosen then remember to de-brief on any situation encountered. Even if its with yourself. No need to carry anything from an incident or encounter with you. Lingering feelings will effect your control later.

Kinda cool to see someone facing some of the same questions and decisions I've had and occasionally touch base with. Thanks for offering an open mind and some resistence. Got me thinking a little different on a few things.

Face the charges while at peace with yourself. That is the gateway to being fearless.

See, now forgive me for taking issue with you MSG, but why is it ok for someone to be proud of their intelligence, their cooking, their skill at whatever, but the second a man values his muscularity it's all about him having a huge ego?

Actually, please don't take this as a personal response. I'm changing it to an open statement along the same lines of the previous issue. Weightlifting and bodybuilding are legitimate pursuits that require hours of dedication. Even if you think that kind of muscularity is gross looking, I think it's a step too far to refer to all those guys as being narcissists. The human body is said by a lot of artists to be the basis for all art, and even da Vinci recognized the beauty and importance of symmetry and proportion in his 'Vitruvian Man'. To that degree, many bodybuilders would refer to what they practice as an art form using the human body as a canvas.

Personally, I think it's much more annoying when someone brags about all the books they've read and puts forth an attempt to let everyone know how smart and enlightened they are. The male body? That's just plain beautiful.

Well, straight off the bat I have to say I've never liked the idea of a "superior" person. No such animal, in my book. I get that some people may be more enlightened or more educated or physically stronger or whatever. Does that make them superior to others? I don't think so. It just makes them, well, more enlightened or more educated or stronger.

So you can take more pain than the average person - what's so superior about that? Does it benefit mankind? Was Einstein inferior because he required painkillers? How does me taking a headache tablet when required make me inferior to you? And who exactly judges which people are superior? Because depending on their culture and background the people they see as "superior" could be very, very different to how you seem to judge people.

You should also know that since the average woman's pain threshold is nine times higher than a guy, you're saying that women are, on average, nine times more superior than men.

Secondly, I don't agree that not showing pain makes you better than others. Mostly because I don't agree that pain exists to make you a stronger, better person. Or even to let you know you're alive. Pain is there to let you know something is wrong. Key word there - wrong! It's the body's signal that it's not impressed and wants you to know it. It's not saying "I'm going to torture you to see if you have the strength to resist!" it's saying "AAAAHHH!!! AAAHHH! WHAT THE F**K ARE YOU DOING TO ME!!! THIS ISN'T NORMAL!!! AAAHHH!!!"

Chris- I wasn't referring to guys who simply want to have strength and endurance and good physical condition. I'm talking about the guys ( and I'm sure you've met some) who spend every dime on supplements and 3 hours a day in the gym, not because they are training for a marathon or as a way to be healthier, but so they can stand around showing off and talking about how ripped they are. Mostly I was commenting on the kind of guy who appeals to me and I am not fond of anyone who brags or obsesses about their appearance in any way. I'd rather have someone who places value on kindness, responsibility, fun, stability etc..

When I said "superior mind", I meant precisely that. A mind able to overcome and withstand more. A more conditioned psyche than the average person. Perhaps if you'd ever undergone SERE training, you'd know what I was talking about.

It is possible to be smarter, more educated, more intelligent than someone without being as mentally conditioned as them. "Physically tough, mentally strong and morally strait." is part of the infantryman's creed, and it expresses not superior intelligence, but a mind that is able to continue functioning under the harshest conditions. This is what I mean by a "superior mind".

Also, I'd like to hear where you got this statistic that women's pain thresh-hold is higher than men's. There's no real way of measuring that, unless you sat down with a certain number of each gender and inflicted pain upon both of them until one gave up. I have a feeling no such study has ever existed, though, and that this is some sort of asinine logic (not that you're the one being asinine: I have heard this statistic before from other people, even men) that's based on the fact that women are the only one's physically capable of giving birth to a child, that they must be tougher.

"Better"? I don't really want to use that word. I'm sticking with mentally superior, because it expresses precisely what I mean it to: A mind that functions more dependebly in spite of stress.

DTH- ROTFLMAO it totally reminded me of Eddie Izzards commentary on people who give those overly tough macho death grip hands shakes and how you should respond by screaming in pain and such to show how big a jerk the person is being.

I've done that. And (as you know MSG) I don't posses the appearance for doing so.

I like messing with folks occasionally.

MSG - That's definitely a good idea.

And, to be honest, it reminds me a bit of George Carlin's view on zero-tolerance. Basically, he believes that any time you see someone talking about zero tolerance for this, or zero tolerance for that that, or zero tolerance for some other gorram thing, it means that someone doesn't want to bother thinking about the problem in question . . . and judging by the track record for zero-tolerance policies, I'd wager he's right.

I take your point, Chris, but like I said I don't think the ability to overcome pain makes you mentally superior. I don't doubt it would come in handy in this painful world, but I don't see it as something to aspire to. I'll endure as much as I can when I have to. I'm not going to deliberately inflict pain on myself just so I know I can function if I happen to be caught in the middle of a desert with no doctors and an urgent need to remove my own appendix.

That's part of the whole hippie thing though. I look to see the beauty the human mind can create, not the harshness it can endure. To me if any mind is "superior" it's one that can create poetry, art, music, philosophy, anything that helps us get in touch with something beyond ourselves.

Of course the fact that I suck at all that stuff may be why I don't like the idea of someone being "superior"

What's SERE training?

It is possible to be smarter, more educated, more intelligent than someone without being as mentally conditioned as them. "Physically tough, mentally strong and morally strait." is part of the infantryman's creed, and it expresses not superior intelligence, but a mind that is able to continue functioning under the harshest conditions. This is what I mean by a "superior mind".

Why do you view the mind that can withstand more as superior to the mind that can understand and create more? They are different. They are both better at different things. Personally I'd rather be more intelligent than to be able to withstand more pain. What equation are you using to rate brains?

At some point you're body WILL take over and the pain will win. It's called passing out.

And while this came up because of your comment about controlling pain, the topic doesn't exist in a vacuum. Your previous postings on being able to kill someone you loved as triumph over love, etc played a part in it.

What's the point of feeling then? Why feel love if you don't express it? Why find something humorous at all without laughing?

Your definition of control, from what I can make out, borders on supression...at least in regards to the "weak" emotions such as love, fear, pain, etc. If you let those emotions show at all, people (or yourself) would consider you weak. Therefore you won't let them show. You want to control to the point of non-existence.

Actually it is called a "supreior mind" I don't think that Chris is calling it that because of what he feels.(he could be) But in some readings on said topic I had done myself, that is what it is refered to as.
