KILLAMAJIG

Howdy yall,

I am new to Serenity and Firefly, having just recently acquired me the DVDs of the show and movie. I am a sci-fi fan, and the fact that it took me this long to find Firefly is a testimony to how horrible the folks at Fox were at marketing the show. It is in my humble opinion the best show I have ever seen. So, with that in mind, please bear with me as I ask this question:

It would seem to me that if Battlestar Galactica is on it's 3rd season, having much resistance from the original series fans and having to build a fan base on Sci Fi, that a network like Sci fi picking up Firefly as a series would be a no brainer. I would expect that the smaller cast and simpler style would mean lower production costs than BSG (even if they were the same), but Firefly would have a bigger fan base. Look at how large it is now, and FOX bungled the handling of the whole series as to marketing, episode order, scheduling and early cancellation. Given the fact that TV shows and movies nowadays make most of their money in DVD sales and rentals, it would make sense for Sci Fi to grab this show. I love BSG, but I really can't watch an episode more than once, where with Firefly I repeatedly watch episodes and thus must have the DVDs. Any thoughts on the subject are appreciated, and again, my apologies if this subject has been beaten to death, as I said before, I am new...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Of course the subject has come up many, many times over the past four years, and will continue to be each time a newbie joins the Browncoats. Joss shopped the show around to other networks at the time of the cancelation, and I have to assume Sci-Fi was one of those, but they all passed on the deal, more than likely due to the production costs. Now that Universal is the production company it does make a lot of sense for them to pick it up for Sci-Fi, at least as a mini-series, but only time will tell. Money is the key, so tell everyone you know about the show and get them to buy the dvds, or buy them yourself as gifts.

Oh, and welcome to the site. Our boat can hold a lot of passengers and I'm glad to see you onboard. Chow's in ten, no need to dress.

Thanks Egg,

I am sure that indeed Joss did shop the show at the time. I think that with some time under it's belt, the idea looks better now than in '02. Fox is funny though. Cancelled Family Guy to bring it back, and now Futurama is coming back on the air. It would seem that the process of cancelling a show and watching DVD sales is going to make Nielsen's rating system obsolete

I also believe that Firefly is more viable financially as a sci fi series than as a movie. Just comparing it to BSG and it's success, and the losses Serenity took to get done. I would love to see both, don't get me wrong.

I agree, it would be great if Sci-fi channel picked up a Firefly season 2. Of all the channels, they seem to be the most enthusiastic - they're doing re-runs of the series (at least in the UK) and they're promoting it well. They seem to genuinely be fans of the series - but of course, they can't completely ignore the economics of it. Firefly is expensive to produce because of all the special effects and the set itself, so if they're uncertain about it, they won't pick it up. And Joss wants to do more movies first as well, but I think that there's certainly a possibility for a season 2 Firefly when Joss is ready on a lower budget at Scifi channel. I would prefer a new series to more movies, but at the moment it seems less likely.

I'm new here too, but am up to date on Firefly's post-cancellation history, etc. I was wondering if anyone had insight into the following, though:
http://www.fireflyseason2.com/index.asp claims to be assessing interest in the possibility of an independantly produced second season of Firefly. However, I have no idea how long this site has been around so it's probably old news.
http://whedonesque.com/comments/11401 was a little more interesting, since it's only 10 days old. I don't know if the second movie concept referenced here is an idea that never got of the ground or what, but the possibility of new life in the Firefly 'verse was something I had to look into.
Thanks in advance for any info you can give me... no rush though, since I'm sure you're all busy celebrating the anniversary of Serenity's release.
