I've known very few men that actually liked to dance, and even fewer that thought they were good at it. Some will relent and do a slow dance just because there is touching involved. The reality is that all a man would have to do is sway a little and let me dance around him. That would make me happy. I'm not looking for a good dancer. I just want someone willing to dance with me.

I love my captain

I like a guy whose willing to dance. I don't paticualrly care if he is all that graceful, so long as he doesn't hurt anyone. I remember a guy at my prom (yes it was only 4 years ago) That I danced with a bunch. Neither of us was all that good. In fact, I think we were making utter fools of ourselves, but we were having a lot of fun. We were doing a kind of, simplified swing dancing I guess. As I said, lots of fun.

Mainly because men have guy friends. there is nothing more fun than ripping on your friends. Now do we really want to give our friends that kind of ammo in this gizmo populated era. I mean it could be months later and you friend will say to you "hey remember that night at the club and how big of a fool you made of yourself" as he is pointing to the new website he created with you dancing on the home page.

me I don't care much. I used to dance at the club anyway. heck with them I was having a good time.

I did tend to scare the girls away though.

I belong in a mosh pit or a goth club when I dance.

I've never been told I'm good at dancing but I've been told I have the potential to be good at it. I can keep a beat just fine and I'm a fairly quick learner. I just don't see it as fun.

Why you ask, VerseExplorer? For me it's simple, there's no point to dancing. You can't win at dancing. There's no score. Heck there's not even a right and a wrong way to dance most of the time. For ballroom or something like that there may be a pattern you follow, but it's more or less like a hampster wheel. You never get anywhere.

As you guys pointed out we might go for slowdancing because A.) there's touching involved (that at least incorporates one of our interests) and B.) it's fairly easy to do. We tend to not like making idiots out of ourselves. Especially since guys like to make fun of other guys dancing. If they're good at it then they're fruity and if they're bad at it then they're idiots. It's a no win situation in guy land.

These are my observations at least. Still if I like the girl enough I'll dance with her. Not that I like making a fool out of myself in front of someone I like either.

Tristan this is how I picture you moving gracefully

I choose to respond with the lyrics from a Will Smith rap, which I firmly believe should be played as the opening song to every junior high school dance..

Yo! If you can't dance, it's cool to get up now
Usually, ya'll stand off on the side,
You know you're a little embarrassed or whatever
But this one of those joints for everybody,
So get on up but keep it simple

[CHORUS]

If you can't dance then this is your jam, baby, left to right all night
Slide that's all you gotta do... You can't dance then this is your jam, baby
Left to right all night, slide, that's all you gotta do
Now we all know the boy at the club, all liquored up,
Boy with the bub tryin' to pick 'em up, wack dancing,
'Wooking pa nub', shirt too bright, pants too tight
Boy settle down
Now I ain't just messing with you
I got better things to do
I'm trying to help, I got a lesson for you
I know you do the best you could do
Wanna get next to Boo, then the less you do the better
Cause women equate dance with sex
They gon' see you & be like, 'Next'!
But you gon' be like, 'hold up Ma' ('Next!')
But she gon' be like, uh huh, ('Next!')
Now looka-here, rule #1, know ya name,
if it ain't Usher, Justin or Hammer, then we can touch ya
Rule #2, never do a dance you can't do, why stupid,
Cause you can't do it

[CHORUS]

So I'm up in my spot in Miami the other night, right
& this Dude's out on the floor OD-ing, just way 'over-dancing'
So his Mommy wanna holla at me
She thought my name was Billy, I told her it was Willie
She said she watch my TV show & I was very silly
Told her I was from Philly she looked at me said, 'Really?'
& judging from her t-shirt, I could tell that she was chilly
So I gave her my sweater, she said her name was Etta
She said she come from Cuba and she just had bought a Jetta
She said she was glad I met her, let's go somewhere together
She said she'd ride in my car cause she knew my car was better
The conversation cookin', attention getting' tookin'
My Spidey senses tinglin', I felt somebody lookin'
Now who this brotha lookin', & now he runnin', bookin'
I'm mad I'm like a fisherman, I almost had my hook in
I figured I should get up & quickly clear my head up,
Cause Etta got a man & I'm feelin' kinda set-up
Now Dude was really fed up & yo, he wouldn't let up
Homey if I hit you, you might never ever get up
Now he was not a dancer, plus he wasn't handsome
Comin' like Mel Gibson, like I had his girl for ransom
Yo, Pedro wanna go out side, yo amigo, tranquillo... slide

[CHORUS]

Now rule #3 is easy, please remember that you ain't on "Beat Street"
Sweet feet, you ain't tryin' to win no TV, another dude did a move
No need to out do it
Rule #4, out on the floor, don't be doing moves that don't nobody do no more
Draw too much attention to be adventurous out on the floor
There's a reason that don't nobody do 'em no more, you feel me?
This may be hilarious, but Rule #5 is serious, it's a shame that we have
to discuss
That there's no lip biting or pelvic thrusts
I mean you think that move will put the sting on her,
you too close, tryin' to put a ring on her?
You don't know that girl, don't cling on her & don't put your thing on
her...cool?!

[CHORUS]

I choose to rise instead of fall- U2

whoa whoa whoa no one's saying that. I said I would if I liked her enough. Not just if she wants to. I'd never be able to do anything if I danced with every girl who wants to dance. Not that I'm some stud that all the women in the world want to dance with. More there are enough women out there who just want to dance and don't care who the guy is.

Ah, Zeek...go ask all of the geeky swing dancing men if there is no point in dancing. I think they'll tell you there is plenty of point to dancing. If you're a good dancer, there is a much higher probability that a girl will sleep with you. Much higher. From my experience in the swing dancing community, the guys the can dance get ALL the girls. No matter looks, personality, etc. It's all about the dancing. I know for me, I just melt when a guy knows how to lead me, how to hold me just right so that I can just surrender control to him, how to be suggestive without crossing the line to obscene.

Ah, dancing. Love it. Although I will say I'm not too fond of club dancing. Grinding on some guy I hardly know just doesn't appeal to me. Nor does watching others do the same. Dancing these days borders on vulgar.

Okay...with that, I'm out for the weekend. ;)

Yeah but that's pretty much like guys who sleep with the biggest pair of breasts they can find. Personally I don't want to find a girl like that. I'd perfer them to like me instead of my dancing ability. I also don't like the idea of using dancing to get my foot in the door because then it's implying I'm going to continue to go dancing. Which I don't like to do in the first place.

NICODEMUS

I don't dance for a simple reason. My knees (and a lot of other joints in my body) are buggered. it's hard to appear graceful or sexy on a dancy floor when most twists are accompanied by a popping or cracking sound emenating from a knee or ankle.

I no longer mosh either, due to neck/back injuries sustained in the past. These days I'm content to stand at the back and nod my head in time with the music.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

Traveler, Love the Chicken Little! I don't think the chicken dance is only done in Wisconsin. I think most of us have bent our arms like wings, and flapped them and shook our bottoms to the chicken dance. Although it would be interesting if others around the world have ever done the chicken dance.

Mink, Wouldn't you rather have the Safety Dance song in your head over the Chicken Dance song?

You HAD to mention the chicken dance, didn't you!?
Now it's stuck in my head.
We do it at weddings (especially Italian) here in NY too.

Why dance? Because it's a great way to flirt, silly. For those of you who are too creaky for mosh pits and too self concious for bump and grind at the disco, and really don't think swing's where it's at:
May I suggest Contra Dancing?
It is easier than square dancing and the music's better. If you know your left from your right and you can count to 8 you are overqualified! Yet it's fun. Includes live music and Caller.
There is physical contact (not too much though) and the opportunity to actually hold a conversation while you dance. Good exercise (you can/do break a sweat) without triggering asthma attacks.
Be warned: you will probably run into intelligent women and men, many of whom are not in the mainstream of society and who also enjoy speculative fiction among other things. Some of them may be into thrash metal as well. It tends to be a very open and welcoming community. Folkies abound.

Well *I* like it.

Sorry Stinkingrose:

I thought the chicken dance only existed in Wisconsin. Never saw it in any Chicago weddings I attended, so I just assumed it was a Wisconsin thing. I don't feel so bad about being from Wisconsin now I know we are not the only insane people in States.

VerseExplorer, do you really think they do the chicken dance in other countries? Maybe Canada. They are just about as crazy as we are.

Being an old fart that I am I don't know about the safety dance. If it was recorded after 1980 I am usually lost. My car radio dial only picks up moldy oldy radio stations. The Platters, Dean Martin, Janus Joplin are more my speed.

Of course I found the chicken at photobucket. Typed in dance and started searching for something crazy and out popped this chicken. Well of course I thought of the chicken dance.

I am sorry Stinkingrose

No... No... Traveler!! - tis not just limited to the Wisconsin area!

*Falls off her chair at a memory she probably shouldn't share but is going to anyway because - well, you're all family!

Picture a plump, blonde woman in the slums of Cogayan De Oro, Mininao, The Philippines - doing the chicken dance for a group of laughing street kids in the middle of the night!!!

The kids were gorgeous and kept doing popular, local dances ('Otso Otso' & 'The Spaghetti Dance') for us whenever we showed them the least attention! I did a dance in reciprocation of the gesture - I don't know who laughed harder, my friends, the boys or me...

Ah... no - don't ask there are NO PHOTOS!!! (though there might be one of 'Otso Otso'...?)

...don't they have the music LOUD enough in Adelaide... I mean I remember it as a sleepy little town... er city? But honestly!

No... No...

Edit: Nicodemus! What?

They have it loud enough, but I can feel the sounds of the protesting joints reverberating up through my skeletal structure. Maybe I'm just aparanoid that way.
