I think we should ponder something non-gendered... Does the meaning of a name change whether or not you would give it to your children. One of my students has carefully picked names for his hypothetical future children based on their meaning and I just wondered whether (EVEN if you aren't in any relationship or ever planning to have kids , since this is largely speculative) the meaning of a name would make you not want to use it...for example my name (Lila) is a derrivative of Delilah and I really don't like that it means dark haired and dark hearted, or destroyer of men.

I gave my children rather innocuous and common names, I guess part of it was the desire to shield them from being singled out on account of their name. Couldn't even tell you what meanings they hold. I have always lived with a very rare foreign version (in the Anglo world) of a very common name. I don't have any problems with that, but I suppose I just wouldn't take the liberty of picking that for someone else.

I don't put much stock into underlying meaning, only in what the name gives away on its surface. There are certain African American names that have become stereotypical and unfortunately sound a little goofy to me (I know, it says more about me than it does about them).

Then there's this whole genre of names like "Summer", "River", "Spring", "Skye", "Leaf" that are cute and worthy in principle but I can't shake the prejudice either: hippie kids. Gotta go, to be continued.

I really don't read much into the "meaning" of names. I don't look at my friend Bronwyn and think "fair breast" (because that's what it means), she's just Bronwyn.
The name Kennedy means "Ugly Head." I don't look at Ted Kennedy and...oh, never mind.

I look more at the uniqueness of a name. I wanted my son to have a masculine, different, but pronouncable name- we had a list of about 5 picked out, but when he arrived, we took one look at him and pronounced him Carson.

I'm Maura. I used to hate my name, but now I love it because its so different- and, imho, pretty. I love Lila because you don't meet many Lilas. Besides, there was the beautiful Lila Quartermaine character on General Hospital when I was a teen.

If I were to have a daughter, I'm fairly sure I'd call her Chloe. Don't know why, to be honest; I suppose I just really like the name.

My own name was chosen based on several criterion: First, it had to be two syllybles, second, it had to not be shortenable without loosing any sense, third, it had to be a name which nobody in the family had, so it wouldn't provoke the in-laws. The same with my brother, Colin.
It didn't help me, though, that another seven Ryans were born in a ten click radius on the same year.

If I wanted to A) traumitize or B) distinguish my as-yet-non-existent son with a unique name, it'd probably be on the lines of Casimir (Cas, for short). It means "Destroyer of the Peace", which is what I wholely expect he would be.

To complete my earlier thought on hippie names, I certainly wouldn't want anyone to think that I would impugn "our" little starlet, Summer, for that name is borderline not too hippie, somewhat like "Autumn" or "April" (and MSG, I apologize for making fun of your name, but you kinda deserved it after posting that dancer pic).

A few weeks ago I met a little girl named "Petal". Now that's all well and good, but now imagine a 35 year old professional woman named "Petal". Aren't there enough stereotypes that women need to contend with? It's one step short of "Lulu". Or "Daisy".

What I also find amusing are those hopelessly dated names: Ethel, Gladys, Mildred, Gertrude, etc. Love 'em, but it would sure take cojones to name your kid that.

Names, names, names.

Meanings and picking names

Personally, I actually like to find out what they mean, and actively helped a friend try to pick a name for her firstborn. Do I put stock in those meanings...no, not really, although mine means 'soft hair' and 'youthful' and well, the women in my family age very well (mom's in her sixites and only has some crow's feet and is still getting acne from skin oil) and let's see *plays with hair* yeah it's kinda soft.

YMMV.

BUT...in my father's family there's a whole bunch of naming traditions (some of which have to do with what date in the year a boy in the family is born) which results in a lot the same names over and over and over.

This gets confusing at times. My three uncles share names with three of my male cousins, so using the 'Uncle' title is very necessary (and quite confusing for the older generation where that doesn't apply at all), and one of my cousin's children is named after his great-grandfather, and is also my father's name, however my father went by his middle name his entire life to avoid confusion with his father.

Still with me?

Fortunately only a few of the girls share names, and it's usually their being named after their granmothers.

When my older siblings were born, it was expected by both sides of the family that they would be named for someone else in the (respective) family. So, for my two older siblings, their first names were our maternal grandparent's and their middle ones our paternal ones.

When I came along, my folks didn't know what to do...they were out of parents!

This isn't the absolute truth, but it ain't far either. My mother couldn't make up her mind and finally drew a name out of the hat (so to speak) of the ones she liked ... at the hospital!

My sister, my brother and one of my aunts blew off the while naming tradition thing, and I think things are more interesting (and less confusing) for it.

So where do I stand? Were I to have a kid at this late date, I'd go with something I like the sound of and not worry so much about what it means. (I like Liam and Moira for names.

)

Spelling, Etc.

It counts! I hate the trend of creative name spelling, especially for names that were used by both genders with a slight spelling variation to let folks know their gender. (Marion/Marian Francis/Frances Terry/Terri)

Children should never be named for the month in which they were born. You've had nine months to think about it, try harder.

Children's names should never be for household items or 'titles' such as "President" or "Major." (yes, I've seen all these)

Do not name your children to complete a pun on their sir names. Marrying into a pun is your own choice; don't punish your children with your bad sense of humor. Actually any name you consider, try it out saying it as a full name...in front of someone who is not your spouse. If they giggle or act like they swallowed a dustgiraffe, do not use that name. (I have examples, but I can't use them due to HIPAA.)

Remember...your kids have to live with those names. Day in and day out. In public. In classrooms. On playgrounds.

Think before you name.

My friend's 4 1/2 year old has a classmate named "Princess." No joke. That's her name. Eek. I've also met a "Precious" or two in my day.

My name is a derivation of Theresa and means warrior woman (or something like that). Yeah, whatever.

There are some names I wouldn't consider because of meaning, but more so I wouldn't consider because I knew someone by that name and I didn't like them.

I could not agree more...I look at some of these celebrities and think..oh that's cute while they're still babies, but excuse me Supreme Court Justice Apple???? Sounds moronic huh??
That was actually a suggestion of my friend. That before you name your child you put the title Supreme Court Justice in front of it and if it still sounds good, then go for it.
I feel especially bad for the Robert Rodriguez kids... Rocket, Rebel, and Racer... I mean hello you really want your kid to walk into a board room and say Hi I'm Rocket and expect people to take him seriously?! I think a lot of parents forget ( in some way) that these kids will grow up and while a cute name is fun when they are babies, it's sadistic when they are in junior high and the poor thing is listening to a sub either mangle or laugh over their name.

What is tough is th people with famous names. I am Jim Carey, but in 1968, i was named for my father, nad really who th hell was Jim Carrey, right? Plus, Carey is a ver y common irish name, and there are a million of us running about Boston, let me tell you.

However, I went to college with a Jim Morisson, and his parents had to know exactly what they were doing to him, which is unforgivable.

I had a customer once (and this guy had no sense of humor whatsoever, just an absolute redwood up his ass)with the unfortunate name of David Berkowitz......damn, but I wanted to ask him if he had a dog.

Aubry is good. Like Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy. Any of you ever read those books? Great character, well played by Russell Crowe in Master and Commander, although he got fairly genericized in the film treatment and we didn't get to see his many, many flaws and essential dorkiness when not actually commanding a ship.

(My mom's cousin has the same name as a formerly popular C/W singer back in the fifties. He got LOTS of calls from folks thinking he was the singer and eventually had to get an unlisted number.)

Okay so here it goes. I've loved the words Chaos and Inertia as names for children. However my freaking parents named me Dentalia (latin for tooth) and I've loved it since day one. Plus on the positive side if you've ever met a Dentalia you've met me because I'm the only one I've ever known of. Maybe because people actually research names for their children. I can't pronounch my name in my tribal language of Weyott or I might change it legally.

People making up spellings for childrens names also bothers me Jennifer is Jennifer not Jequifear.....yeah I know not really close. Oh well I'm not doing so good right now.

I'm moving back to my home town of Redding in two weeks because I made a glaring mistake. Also I'm not meeting the emotional needs of my friend and roomate..........I don't know why I should but oh well. Eh...some people juggle geese?

I sate as my prime example, the daughter of (now-deceased) INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence: Heavenly Hirani Tiger Lily (not sure if she uses Hutchence or Yates as her surname, but either way, that's one mouthful and a half of a name).

Names... I have always, always wanted Laura for a girl & Nicholas for a boy - might have something to do with my deep love of Laura Ingalls Wilder's 'Little House' series of books from my childhood... Not sure why Nicholas, but I do love 'Nicholas Nickley' by Charles Dickens... and despite a couple of revolting Nicholas's in my college days I still love it - Nicholas Brendon did live up to the nobility of it too... & then there was the last Tsar of all Russia...

But having said that I have never thought for a moment that I could, should or would have child by myself so it would be a case of throw them into the mix and work it out... if I ever get to that point of course!

I am actually very fond of Kaylee at the moment, funny that!

My name, Meredith, is Welsh in it's origin... I have always loved it! Ironically though it means 'child of the ocean' & I have quite a fear of water!! My middle name is for my Scottish grandmother Annie but in my case it's Anne. My sisters also have individual names with a family middle name, Trudi Jean (Jean being my Auntie's name) & Leigh Helena, (Helena - prounounced Hel-ay-nah - is my mother's middle name, my grandmothers first name and now Leigh's daughter's middle name too & is German in it's origin as my maternal G-G-Grandparents are German.) They are such pretty names.

There have been lots of stories of politics over first names in my Dad's family... There was a lot of dissatisfaction that he was called David when there was an uncle that there had been a 'falling out' with named David... but when I did the family history research his GGGG-grandfather was called David so I think that's even more appropriate than my gradparents realised!

Their parents have never even been to the US, but they named them after states over there...? Someone who's child is in Dakota's class saw the little sister one day, did the name association thing and said 'Oh hello Arizona!' or something like that! LOL!! the poor child - the parents should be shot!

I looked through several baby name books. Absolute rubbish for the most part.
"As lovely as the flower" was given for the meaning of mine in one of them. WTF? Sometimes a name has no meaning, or it has been lost.
Okay, I was named after a plant. I can deal with that. I like my name.
I was one of the only ones back in the early 70s. Now they're blooming everywhere. It's almost as bad as being a Jennifer used to be.
We made a decision to not use the naming traditions in my family. His didn't have one. He did have an aunt named Olive. She fell in love and actually married a man named Pitts. Bless her, I don't think I could have gone through with it.

Site went down around, I dunno, nine this morning, so I didn't get a chance to say good night, but I wasn't ignoring anyone!

I need to start the new Forsaken thread, come to think. Was trying to do that when the boat crashed.
I think I might be fighting off that cold. I'm taking ridiculous amounts of vitamin C and have so far not been taken over completely. My nose is stuffy on and off and someimes my throat is hurting. Maybe that's part of why my energy has been so low.
Names... Yeah, I think name meaning is very important. I like the meaning of my first two names. I'm not sure about the last name, as I haven't been able to find a source that knows exactly what it means. Closest I've come is "armored" which I'm not sure is a good thing. As I've said, my mom's last name has a pretty meaning. But there are quite a few names with horrid meanings that I would not really want to inflict on a child. 'Mary' is a good example. I can't remember exactly, but I think it means 'despair' or something equally unhappy. Also, there are a few feminine names that mean 'man'. What's up with that?
Anyway, I love my name. Gave me some grief in school, but kids will tease anyone if they can find an angle, and they almost always do. There are some very cool, pretty, and unusual names that have some wonderful meanings. I have a whole list of them for characters in stories and such.
But I think a name can say a lot about you. Rose has a few meanings and they all fit me. There's the flower. That fits me. I'm a delicate, sweet little flower with thorns. There's the symbolism, which is mostly spiritual. Both Buddhism and Goddess worship have strong ties to the rose. Well, now, that fits me pretty well too.
It is also, of course, important to have the name sound good and flow well. I've been told a story from the long-long ago of a girl whose last name was Cianci, and her parents named her Nancy Ann. Bad.
I have a name stuck in my head for a daughter. Creya. I made it up, basically. I think it's very pretty but I'm not sure how it would go over.

Ugh, been a nasty day so far. Been all around the countryside chasing smoke sightings and the random idiots who think they can ignore the laws regarding burn-offs.

Still, when the idiot refused to unlock the gate and let us in to put out the fire, we didn't bother being subtle, we simply let one of the water-bombing helicopters dump a load on it.

Yeah - that's a good point Nico! Here's a ponderance to add to that first ponderable...

What is the story behind your FFF.net name...? If there isn't one... make up a short story or something...

I discovered the 'verse at the end of May this year, and since Easter I'd been doing my own research into Mary Magdalene and her role in the establishment of the early church. I really feel that women have been 'disposessed' in the Christian tradition and I wanted to understand how it might have been shaped if the male disciples of Christ had actually had the guts to go against the standards of the day and followed a woman... maybe they did and it was the later leaders who rewrote history in their own idea of what it should be... Anyway - my first name was Magdalene... but after the crash of June '06 I had to re-register and decided to make it Magdalena as it was close to the original... Oh and I really, really hope i get to read a complete copy of MM's gospel one day... the Gnostic gospels are fascinating reading whether you are Christian or not...

Now look where I am - forsaken and imponderable all at once!!
