A "Tower of Babel" device that gives the illusion of being bilingual is being developed by US scientists.
Users simply have to silently mouth a word in their own language for it to be translated and read out in another.

The researchers said the effect was like watching a television programme that had been dubbed.

The system, detailed in New Scientist, is not yet fully accurate, but experts said it showed the technology was "within reach".

All we need now is a savant prodigy like Hoshi Sato to finish it, and we'll be ready to talk to Klingons. . .

We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

That's kinda cool and a little creepy all at the same time. Can you imagine talking to someone and feeling like it had been dubbed?

We will not go quietly into the night
We will not give in without a Big Damn Fight
We are Browncoats, and we know we are right
We will rage, rage against the dying of our engine light!

well, I'm sure that technology will be awfully difficult to make. in any rate it would be a great achievement. but it cannot really make up for the experience of learning a foreign language. learning another language also makes you understand another people's culture and mentality, a univeral translator is unlikely to achieve the same.
