What is the funniest moment on Firefly?

YINYANG

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

It depends on the mood I'm in, and what I'm paying attention to (seeing as how I would be on my tenth or eleventh run of the show). But, usually, the funny moments come when Alan makes a face - any face, really - that reflects either his mood, or the general mood. 'Cause, come on, Alan making faces is funny (and pretty darn cute, too).

WINDSTRUCK

In 'OUR MRS REYNOLDS' episode when Saffron was crying because Mal would not accept her as his wife,
Kaylee says, "It's ok honey, he makes everyone cry. he's a monster."
Mal says: "I'm not a monster!"

I can't help laughing. It was just a very, very childish reply but delivered perfectly!

Ai ya it is so hard to choose...

Wash: "You want a slinky dress? I can buy you a slinky dress. Captain, can I have money for a slinky dress?"

Jayne: (mock reading Simon's journal) "Dear Diary...today I was pompous and my sister was crazy." (flips page) "Today, we were kidnapped by hill folk never to be seen again. It was the best day ever."

Mal: "Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. Whaddya suppose that makes us?"
Zoe: "Big damn heroes, sir."
Mal: "Ain't we just!"

Book: "If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."

Kaylee: (cheerfully) "Oh well let's see...we killed Simon and River, stole a bunch of medicine, and the Cap'n and Zoe are springin' the others got snatched by the feds."

Mal: "Fear's nothin' to be ashamed of, doctor."
Simon: "This isn't fear. This is anger."
Mal: "Well. Kinda hard to tell one from t'other, face like yours."
Simon: "Well I imagine if it were fear, my eyes would be wider."
Mal: "Hmm. I'll keep a look out for that next time."

Kaylee: "But he coulda made 'em family. 'stead of keepin' Simon from seein' I was there. And I carried such a torch! And we coulda...goin' on a year now and I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!"

Drugged Jayne (..all bendy) a treat.

Jaynestown:

Book popping back around corner: "The special Hell!"

Also from OMR:

Mal: "Do you have time to do my hair?" in the Train Job

Zoe: "I was weak" in the Train Job

Wash: "I was in a firefight....ok, I was in a fire....well actually I was fired from a fry cook opportunity" in War stories

And of course: the "alternate" Haven scene from Serenity:

Nathan: Get those bodies together....... I wan't them laid out over the nose of the ship. Put Book front and centre, he is our friend, we should honor him. Kaylee, get that kid who's taking a dirt nap with baby Jesus, we need a hood ornament. Jayne! Try not to steal too much of their shit"

There are so many, the scene at the end of the duel in Shindig; "Well, I'm all right.", the opening scene in Our Mrs. Reynolds; "How can you say that? How can you shame me in front of new people?"; the scene at the end of War Stories where Mal tells Zoe that they must make love, "Now somethin' about that is just downright unsettlin'."

But I always get a good laugh from River in Jaynestown after she has seen Book with his hair down and he tries to approach her at the end of the episode. Everytime I hear her say "Just keep walking preacher-man." I laugh and I honestly couldn't tell you why. It just gets me every time.

Without a doubt the funniest moment is in "Objects in Space."

River: I know you have questions.
Mal: That would be why I just asked them.
River: But we don't have much time captain. I need you to trust me.
Mal: Am I dreaming?
River: We all are.
Mal: (rolls eyes)
River: Don't make faces.
Mal: (suddenly nervous)

I like the subtlety (you can't just listen to it, you have to watch it) and how CONVINCING Nathan is in his sudden fear and confusion, like maybe she might ACTUALLY be posessing the spaceship. lol.

Don't make faces.

My second favorite funniest moment. It might be the only scene in the series or the movie (that I've noticed, anyways) that makes these guys seem like the average boys you went to classes with. In this scene they're co-conspirators in their hedonism, the captain-mercenary relationship is temporarily relaxed and replaced by the bond that only alcohol creates.

Wash's non-verbal reactions always get me. For example, the thumbs up he gives Zoe when she calls Mal "sir" in the pilot right after they were discussing how Mal likes to be called sir. His reaction in Trash to the tissue up Mal's nose is priceless.

I also love me some snarky Simon. In the face of danger with his sister behaving strangely he still smart mouths the bounty hunter with the gun pointed at him.

Already mentioned, but Book with the hair and the whole interaction between he, Zoe and River makes my sides hurt. And the one where Mal and Inara are discussing when she fell and hit her head. This is a great thread.

For number one I'd have to go with Book's hair. Not just River's reaction the but way it's followed up with Zoe's too.

Of course there's Jaynestown when they see the statue and Simon says,"This must be what it feels like to go insane." Then later when the guitar player starts singing "Jayne, the man the call Jayne." he says,"No this must be what if feels like to go insane."

Impossible to choose just one. Many of my favorites people have already listed above. But, one which I *ALWAYS* love to see is the Operative.....

It's been said, of course, so I'm hardly original.

Yes, agree that the Jayne Bendy scene is probably
the best protracted funny scene, for the acting
of all participants, and for the lines.

But single lines? There are others as yet not
mentioned.

JAYNE: That's why I don't kiss 'em on the mouth.
And note reactions.

BAD COP (looking up at Jayne): That hat makes you
look like an idiot.

SIMON asks what's Jayne's job -- on the ship
MAL: Public relations.
The way Nathan nearly throws this line away and
quickly stuffs food in his mouth -- perfect.
