I can't work this out and I'd like someone more knowledgable or observant than me to help.

Wash speaks with the same accent and idiom as Mal and Kaylee, which suggests he's from the outer system. However, in Ariel he's quite keen on convincing Zoe that the core isn't all bad - he's obviously been there before, even if he's not into the resteraunts and museums. In Our Mrs Reynolds, he says to Saffron that on the planet where he was born, you couldn't see a one of them (the stars) because of the pollution.

As a first thought, and I won't be defending this proposition by force of arms, maybe he was born to a lower class family on a core world and got the hell out first chance he could.

Personally I think he's from a world about three quarters of the way out but he's upwardly mobile. He wants a better life for himself and his family (note his refusal to countenance raising a child on Serenity) and the means moving towards the core. Quite how he sees Zoe fitting into that is a mystery (she's career military and would be joining the Alliance army over her own dead body) but there you go.

We also know that his world was heavily polluted (could be either overdevelopped core od industry-raped rim), and that he and Mr. Universe attended the same flight academy, which may well be in the core (assuming it was a good flight school and not "Larry's Discount Licenses").

I can see him born on the mid-rim, then relocated to the core to attend the best flight school he could get into.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I think he was born on an industrial planet near the Rim, but that he went to flight school in the Core. He's a hell of a pilot, so you know it wasn't some po-dunk school. Not to say all the flight schools on the Rim are po-dunk, but come on, it is a little underdeveloped. So I think he learned to fly in the Core. Or maybe he started out on the Rim but was so good he had to go to the core to develop his skill.

I see Wash as being born and raised on some mid-core planet. The politics of which are divided 60/40 alliance, alliance being the 60. Remember the old alliance saying. "As you get closer to the center, life gets better and better." Remember that. Of course you don't because I just made it up. but it seems to fit. As ppl venture out to the rim worlds they just seem to be forgotten. left to their own devices but still subject to alliance rule ( what if gold were discovered on a rim world? Alliance wouldn't give that up)

Anyway Wash hasn't taken the " Life is great because of big government" attitude. Althought he doesn't view it the same as Mal either. I see him as sitting on the fence looking at both sides which suggest as noted he's from an industrial middle planet.

His flight school was definitly centre planetish, I always imagined he came from a centre planets moon, stands to reason that the inner moons would be used to build all the lovely things that the rich folk need!

Wash attended Professor Wu Li's Academy of Aerospace Flight . No , it ain't
" Larry's Discount Licenses " . You have to be asked to attend Wu Li's Academy . Only a prior graduate can nominate a neophyte for training , and no one is accepted or trained without first taking the Oath of Service . That's how the Secrets are preserved ...

Professor Li is very old , no one knows his age with any certainty ...

Professor Wu Li is the renowned author of the quintessential spaceflight text in the known 'Verse :
" Physics of Aerospace Flight Dynamics and Control " .

Professor Li keeps a very low profile , and his Academy is tucked away on a beautiful little world of rolling hills , green grass , clean creeks , and bamboo forests . His little world might be called Haven , if there wasn't already a world in the 'Verse with that name . The location of Wu Li's Academy is , of course , a closely-kept secret . Some speculate that's because Professor Li doesn't hold with the heavy-handed intrusions of the Alliance , and is himself a man who upholds Liberty and Peace . He just wants to go his way ...

Believe , or not .

I know all of the foregoing , because there's a story that must be told ...

Keep the Faith . Feel the Joy ! Share the Love .
