Ah we're back. Nearly had a nervous breakdown without it...Terrible timing. One of the teachers had an emergency so I had to teach his classes and mine simultaneously ( which is really not fun) while he was gone...and FFF was down so ARGH!!!
He's back and so are we so I am feeling a mite better:)
Here's a ponder for us. Were you part of a clique in school or not and do you think that affected what kind of person you are now?

I was sort of in several. As a cheerleader I was often obligated to be with them and hang out with them, but we weren't what you'd call best friends...mostly I hung out with an was friends with the drama kids ( I was one of the few allowed to move between the "cool kids" and the drama kids without having either group reject me. I'd say the only way it affected me was teaching me how to like and find common ground with lots of different kinds of people and I will say it taught me not to be judgemental.

I've oft wondered that myself, being a constant offender in that regard. Time was (when I first joined (in May?) seemed like you, PhoenixRose and Penguin were the only ones with flare. MSG - I was both a drama kid and a band geek, which were pretty much mutually exclusive, but both of them affected how I grew as a person in their own ways (I think I like the changes from the drama more, seeing as one of my jobs is getting paid to lie to people)

See, that's what worries me! Because I've made *loads* of animations and practically pushed them on people because I like seeing others using them. And now I'm worried that the very thing I did to give something back to the site is actually crashing it!

Giving up on trying to catch up on the last Imponderable until I have some serious time available.

Clicks - I was in the intellectual-artistic grouping. As with many schools athletics reigned supreme. I had the good fortune of being the best friend of one of the basketball team's starting lineup. The Geeks had relatively good (that is to say mutually non-agressive) relations with the Jocks. But being the outcasts of society, we had our own special lunch table. Which we happily shared with our "antitheses", the Special Ed kids. Our common bond of ostracization made it a remarkably comfortable fit. People left us alone and each "side" or "end" of our table made the other feel better about things just by being there...

I never fit into any group at school. I wasn't popular, was a bit brainy but not majorly so, didn't do well at sports, wasn't much interested in clothes, fashion or any particular kind of music, and there were a desperate lack of hippies at my school.

Basically, I was on the outside most of my school life. I had a couple of friends, but only one or two were in any way close. It all added up to a lonely time in my life, but it did give me a perspective on people and on life in general I don't think I would have had otherwise. I know things would have been a lot easier if I had been able to fit in at school, but I also know I wouldn't be me.

I did become somewhat popular during my last two years in school. A rumour went around the school that I was psychic and I became interesting overnight! That was pretty funny.

I contacted Haken a couple of weeks back and asked if there was anything I (or us Browncoats) could do to help. Asked him if he needed help running the site or if he needed money for new equipment since it was crashing so much. He responded asking how often the site was crashing so apparently he had no clue what was happening. I suggest that others e-mail him and let him know about the ongoing problem.

I wasn't in a clique in high school. I hung out with a bunch of different people who didn't fit in anywhere or folks who were willing to hang out with people outside of their regular clique. I don't know if that made me who I am today but I think it speaks to who I am. A loner/individual who isn't much into following the crowd.

Everything seems to be going well so far. I still haven't had the chance to talk to her yet, but I'm also real busy with work and more work. The art show I attend is on the 8th and 9th. I thought it was on the fifteenth. Looks like I got one less week to work with. Oh well. I'll just have to work my tail off this weekend. Kinda glad GND and BabySis are outta town. They can help gathering material, but the rest is up to me.

Leave to me to answer only the impersonal part of the question. Thank you for reminding me that there is more to it than just the clique itself. I've always had a soft spot for the underdog (who was one of my favorite cartoons by the way). Maybe because I was one. Anyway, it taught me about power and the obvious (represented by the physical here) is not always the superior. Behind all the great Kings there were always the wizards and counselors, and in very meaningful ways it was they that held the real power.

edit what's this you're getting prepared for NVG? am a bit out of the loop, keeping tracks of the imponderers proved too much for me.

h'mmm, in primary school i was a bit of the odd-one-out, in secondary school i was part of a gang i guess for the first four years or so (although we'd never of described ourselves as one) i guess we were our years equivalent to the nerds, 'cos we were all a bit into scifi and fantasy, but since we managed to have the biggest person in the year, the cool foreign kid, the mostly-cool-but-occasionally-he-scares-me eccentric (me, laterly i was in the year book as most likely to be either a librarian in fingerless gloves or a serial killer in the yearbook, thought it was cool at the time, really kinda worries me as regards how people must've viewed me now) and various others along that theme we were on pretty good relations with pretty much every other social group.

the next year we started hanging about with the mechaposse in the year above us, who were more clearly nerdish, but still not heavily so, mostly they just didn't much care for the rest of their year. so that year we got into a more outcastish mindset.

year after i started drifting, generally depending on what class i'd been in. would hang around with the english group, the school magazine i took the photies for, the art lot, my latin class, the not-quite-nerdish-nerds. i drifted alot, in an oversized greatcoat.

these days i don't have a circle of friends in that usual sense, but there's a few people i go clubbing with, then i have odds and ends of friends i'll meet for a drink every few weeks/months, i'm a bit stand-offish in alot of respects, so not too many particularily close friends.

and the bunch from work for the occasioanl night out (looking forward to the christmas one, fancy dress, get to wear my mask (which is gorgeous, and deserving of a photo on here sometime in the near future)

NV- I believe I covered best gift ..or uncovered it as the case may be. YOU NAKED!! Ok barring that I'd get her something nice you've seen her use. Is there a particular food or treat she really likes? Home cooked meal is always nice. Or is there something for her horse she's been wanting but hasn't gotten. I don't know her, but if she's into yummy smelling lotions and stuff, Bath and Body Works is having some nice sales and Vanilla Bean is great!! She's been out shopping and attending parties and such so I'd say best choice would be cooking her a meal she really like, putting her favorite movie on , and giving her a foot massage...I don't know a woman who wouldn't go nuts for that.

Hello folks! So we're talking cliques? Ummm? I sort of floating somewhere off the the left of the social scale. Okay so I was weird I guess. I spent most of time with a group of kids who's only common tye was that we all had issues at home. So we kind of just understood each other. Now that we're all out and about trying to grow up into decent adults we still see each other quite often. They're the sort of friends where it doesn't matter if we don't see each other for years or even if we don't like each other anymore we're stuck with one another for life. Other than that I hung out with the nerds and the drama kids a lot of the time. For the most part I'm remembered as the weird girl who was always singing and dancing everywhere. I tend to treat the real world as my own personal playground it's tons of fun!

I was just starting to keep up woth imponderables by getting on site during lunch and then the computer police at work sent out a new rule about using the Web for personal use. Now I don't get on until 6pm Milwaukee time. And as usual there are fourty to sixty posts to skim through so yuo know where were headed.

Anyway, back on course. I was part of the group that was filled with people who weren't a part of any other group. Most of my high school years I was just trying to survive. Didn't really belong to any group until I started meeting people who shared my interests. But it is hard to get to gether when you have to geteverything done on the weekends. Does not leave much time for play. I think that is one reason I sought out our fair fansite. I actually get to discuss the things on my mind and hear other's opinions.
You don't know how happy it made me to realize we discuss other issue beside Firefly. I could probably talk Firefly until everyone is ready to scream, but it is nice to get on other subjects and learn about us.

It's a terrible thing when you aren't allowed to kill time in the desired fashion...

In the beginning I had been following and participating in a variety of threads, then just a few, now I'm down to the Imponderables and occasionally take a peek elsewhere. And lately the Imponderables have been on fire! So I sit back and try to catch what I can, sometimes with more success than others. Sometimes I reach way back an bring up something really old that I never got around to and post something about it. Once in a while that'll start the ball rolling again.

I agree with you Traveler that what sets us apart here is that we're not merely all about Firefly. Firefly is what brought us all together but we all have real lives and other interests, and I always get a kick out of how different we all are and how very much the same, too. The other sites I checked out when I was shopping around (and I NEVER expected to join one), were all about the show and nothing else. We have a LOT of show stuff here and fanfic and art and Big Damn Tie-ins to the 'Verse. But we got soul, too.

It's a great place to be.

I agree. They chat away all day long, and then when I get home it takes all evening to catch up to what has been discussed.

It's usually a very enjoyable read, but then when I'm ready to chat about things most have left for the evening. Luckily that's just about the time when the Aussies, PhoenixRose, and others start joining the thread. Thank goodness for different time zones.

Reference the question of the day. I always saw myself as being on the edge of the cliques. I got along with most everyone, but I only had 5 close friends. Some people told me that I was in with the "cool" kids. I never thought I was. I would occasionally hang with them at school, but I was never included in anything that they did outside of school. I was really active in GAA (Girls Athletic Association), the math club, Latin club, chorus, and musical productions. It was very similar in all of these groups. I got along with them, but I didn't hang with them outside of school. I think it was a strong learning experience that the world is filled with alot of nice acquaintances and a few great true friends.

MSG says the Computer Police are in close with the Telephone Police. I can well imagine they share the same information. Must not talk about them very much or they will catch on to us.

The people I seem to be hanging out with the most these days are at my car dealer. Just destroyed the right rear tire a week ago and have to replace it. Of course I would have to buy new ones in another six months or so. So I have to buy two because the left rear tire is worn down and thus a different diameter. This could cause unheard of calamities if one tire is a 1/4 of an inch smaller than the other.

I catch up on my reading while they work on my car, so at least there is something positive going on.

MCQ

I was never a part of any particular groups in high school or college. I pretty much did my own thing and tried to get along with everyone. In college I was a member of the choir, but not a music major. It was more of an extra-curricular thing for me so I never really felt like I fit in although I did enjoy it. I also did some theatrical stuff but wasn't a theatre major (although my younger brother and most of our friends were). When I think about it, I don't think I fit in to a lot of groups. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but I do feel comfortable among browncoats - even if that's just online, it's better than nothing, right?

Well, I'm actually still in highschool now, but I'm not really sure if I'm exactly in a clique. It's really harder for me to tell what group I'm in than telling what other people are in. Mum's the word, Traveler. In fact, I'm a bit suspicious of my computer here at home. There's little spherical object sitting on top of the monitor that appears to have a lens in it. That can't be good.

I always marvel at people with the presence of mind to bring reading material with them if they know they're going to have a wait. Me, I never learn. Although sometimes it leads me to read things I never would otherwise and that's occasionally enlightening.

Well, McQ, your like me. I helped out with our track team. That means I threw towels at the guys as they entered the showers and they threw them back at me when they were done. Lovely thought. But in later years I started finding people. I have an interest in history and have met many people through that. After years of reading one book after another I finally joined a book club. We only meet once a month, but we really have a good time. Only send half our meeting discussing the book. Were more social than anything else. So leaving school behind is what got me into finding people I enjoy being with.

Well I'll say it. I like it here. We may never meet face to face but I enjoy our group here. Apparently I have discovered I have something in common with people from very different backgrounds and of very different ages. You would never convince me I would be sharing these types of conversations with such a mixed crowd. But here we are.

I get most of my reading done while doing laundry and eating lunch. To many distractions at home to get much done here. But on a quite night I will open a book at home.

Replies for this thread (so far) and the previous one).

Cannibalism - It's called 'long pig' (or 'longum pik' in the pigin english) for a reason. We (humans) taste like pork.

Eddie Izzard - One of many performers whose work I've heard of, but haven't actually seen/heard for myself.

High School Cliques - They don't exist here in the way that they do in portrayals of American Schools (TV, Movies). Even if they did, I was happy to sit in the library and read.

Now to resume reading the archives.
