I rewatched "Objects In Space" last night and a thought occurred. We know that Early is so intuitive as to approach being psychic. So, when he teased Simon about River "grappling" ("Are you sure?", after Simon vehemently rejected the idea) with a member of the crew, could he have been right?

Everything about the episode is very deliberate, very precise...Joss might have inserted Early's comments as a hint for a future plot development/conflict. For instance, if Simon found out that River had bunked with Mal, or Kaylee, or Jayne, big brother might have gone bat shit.

On the other hand, River's behavior is clearly beyond Early's ability (and everybody else's, for that matter) to sum up or predict.

Three other thoughts: "I'll be your bounty, Jubal Early" get me every time, Richard Brooks does a great job giving Early a cold menace, and Jayne going back to sleep was a brilliant touch.

DESKTOPHIPPIE

I think it was setting up for the future more than it was describing a current situation. River may well have wound up "grappling" with someone, but I doubt it would have been one of the crew.

Consider the options:

Mal: Is too busy thinking about Inara. Even if you take the non-director's cut view that he's not trying to sort out the mess he made after sleeping with Nandi, he and Inara are still trying to work out their issues. River sees that herself in the opening scenes.

Wash: Is madly in love with a woman who can kill him with her pinkie.

Book: Follows a narrower path.

Jayne: The most likely and yet unlikely choice. River doesn't seem to like Jayne very much. Perhaps because he betrayed her and her brother on Ariel. As for Jayne... well, he's fond of sex it's true, but I don't think a die-hard man of action like him would drop his trousers while alone with a woman who stabbed him with a butchers knife.

So why did Jubel mention it in the episode? Probably because of how it made Simon react. The mere thought of River having sex drove him to distraction. She's his kid sister. He's spent months looking after her, trying to help her heal. He simply can't handle the thought of her doing anything like that.

That may not be an issue in Firefly or Serenity, but there are indications in Serenity that River is becoming, if not completely healed, at least more stable. "I'm all right" And as she gets older she will naturally become interested in the guys she meets while wandering the 'verse. So the question becomes, will Simon be able to take a step back and give her room to grow, or (since it's highly unlikely River will ever be "normal" mentally speaking) will he still assume he has to protect her from all strangers?

Yes, I've thought about this I hope to write fic about it someday. Maybe. Someday. Maybe another fic writer can run with the idea in the meantime?

technically human

regarding the grappling bit, I doubt it but if you're right, It might give the shepard's toughts ("I don't give a hump about your innocence") a rather more creepy slant.

TERRI

Big brothers are like that. Just like Mal mentions i the BDM, "I can't know that!" When Kaylee mentions her mechanical escapades. They can't take the thought that thier little sisters are interested in guys. Of course, it's okay for them to be involved in any way they see fit, but any guy who tries to talk to thier little sister (or any guy they ses as a potential 'threat'), they will react with anger or violence. Trust me, as the middle of three boys, I have seen this from all angles. Even from my younger bros on occasion. Anyway, I see this as definately Jubal trying to get into Simon's brain, and nothing of substance. Jubal basically did the same thing with everybody he didn't knock out. Specifically with Kaylee who was probably the most emotionally scarred by his use of her. I do agree with DTH, that would certainly be an issue worth exploring and probably would have been a very interesting topic in future seasons of Firefly. River was 'only a kid' in the eyes of everybody on the boat, but certainly she would be out there, meeting guys and she's cute, so guys would be interested in her. And, of course, she's a mystery, and there's nothing men like more than a mystery. But, was Jubal instigating that River was 'sharing a bunk' with someone? I doubt it.

You step into a room with a crazy person you need to step out. Early and River were never on the same ship at the same time never mind the same room. Matter and antimatter scenario the verse would of turned into a black hole.

I like smacken em.

OT, but Early-centric: Richard Brooks fans may like to catch an episode of Brimstone from 1998, featuring our hero as a ruthless leather-clad killer those conversation consists of pseudo-philosophical questions delivered in a menacing whisper. The episode is called Slayer and is directed by Vern Gillum, as those Whedonesque references just keep coming ...

Apologies if this is well-known, I'm just catching up

Yeah, it's as unlikely as Xander + Cordy...

I think Joss would give Jayne a bit of time to develop first though.

I can also see this ending very badly. A badly hurt unstable girl who could wipe out the rest of the crew any time she feels like it is a slightly worrying idea.

I think it's way, way less likely than Xander/Cordelia. Xander and Cordelia had a violent dislike for each other. River and Jayne had actual violence.

EDIT: And before anyone says anything Buffy/Spike DOESN'T COUNT!!!

Good call PurpleBelly. I loved that show!!! Pity it was also cancelled prematurely. I had no idea Richard Brooks was in it, but then I've only watched them the one time when they were aired way back on SKY, here in the uk. Do you have them on tape? Were they ever released?

In reference to the thread: I think it's a psychological trick on Early's part to shake Simons equilibrium. Mind tricks that's all.

^ currently available over Usenet in alt.binaries.multimedia.scifi - I'm too old to do the p2p thing - but don't expect DVD quality. AFAIK this show has only been broadcast commercially.

Thanks PurbleBelly :D not 100% sure how to do all the mojo, but I have a friend who knows all this hocus pocus and maybe he can sort me out for this show. It was great, and I always loved how they knocked out all the red in the photography and used it sparingly for dramatic effect. Brilliant and John Glover was a revelation.

Thanks again.

^ I guess John Glover could regard the show as a successful audition for uber-villany in Smallville

The casting was strong throughout the short run. I'm afraid I have to watch with IMDb handy when in one episode there's him from Smallville, her from House M.D., wasn't he in Carnivale, and it's wotsit from Deadwood.

I initially put the Ridley Scott color-casting down to the poor quality of the capture - my bad

Sorry about the OT
