I would like to agree with you here, but this country is full of so many very stupid people and others who don't want to focus on their own problems that I don't see celebrities like her going away anytime soon. I agree, they are a waste of oxygen, but I don't think there are enough of us (intelligent, coherently thinking people) to be able to create a successful boycott. If only it were legal to shoot people based on their IQ levels, or annoyance levels, or lack of common sense. *sigh*

This actually all ties in with the topic I was discussing with JQ. Consider this: If we did not culturally embrace sex, then these people would not be able to make a living off of it. They would be forced to become productive, or they would die off. Going back to the women's rights portion of this thread, one possible and, in my opinion, probable result is less objectification of females.

A lot of women say that it's "empowering" for them to use sex to get ahead. The problem is that a woman (singular) who empowers herself with it often becomes a symbol (accurate or not) for the "modern woman". So all of a sudden, women who are NOT in positions of power attempt to do the same thing, but because they're not rich and famous, they're just called sluts. Then there's women who reject and resent that type of thinking. These women are generally shit on and take a back seat to other who are willing to put out. There are major ramifications for the entire female gender by embracing sexuality.

Backtracking now, the question would now be (if you agree with me so far) how do we get our culture to stop embracing sexuality? I'll tell you, when I was a child my father encouraged me to treat women respectfully and to turn my head when there was nudity. He didn't have a calender in the garage of Playboy bunnies and he never encouraged or pushed me to be interest in girls. I was almost appalled to find out how many people I knew had been conditioned otherwise, to pull dress tops down when women picked them up, to squeeze breasts, etc. Part of what we can do is to stop training our males to be shitheads because it's funny or cute when they're younger. To admonish them for exploring things that children should not explore and not just shrug it off because "They don't know any better", because they never will know any better with that attitude.

It's interesting that you brought up the idea of a boycott, RIMG. So many Americans these days run off to the government the second something they don't like happens and demand that a law be made in their favor. Certainly, there's plenty of iron-clad conservative groups on my side of the argument that want anything sexual banned outright. But that is just plain wrong. The people of the U.S. were not meant to have their government take care of every little problem they had. It is our duty as a people to raise our OWN standards, to control our OWN conduct. Boycotting is a great form of civilian empowerment, where the people come together on their own and say "No more!". But more important still is how we conduct ourselves in day to day life, and how we teach our children to do the same.

It's fine to damn Paris Hilton in public, but how many Playboys have you bought? (whoever might be reading this). How often do you turn your head to catch one last glimpse of the piece of ass that just walked by? The list goes on. The bottom line is we can and should not rely on a law to be made to stop this wave of aesthetics over intelligence, but we SHOULD rely on ourselves and a higher standard that WE set to stop it. If we try for the rest of our lives and fail, then it was the popular opinion that won out over us, and there is no shame in that. That, too, is what America is about; the desire of the people. But we are Browncoats. We only fight the battles that we know will be hard and nigh impossible. If any of you a truly sincere about wanting the culture to change, I offer you this toast:

Zu gefallenen kameraden.

It happens, it's part of the cycle, get on with things. I can accept that sex is an integral part of the cycle, but it's been so trivialized that the original purpose of it has been all but bastardized and forgotten. And you know what happens, when you hold the pro-creative part above death? You make more and worse death. Famine, starvation, disease, crime, all of these things happen when the population gets too high. We need people to be killed, they don't die naturally fast enough, so we need war and death in more controlled conflicts waged by willing participants to prevent worse from happening to everyone.

You've mixed the Four Horsemen around a bit but they're still all present and accounted for and brought friends! Pardon my asking as the memory is bothersome to you for more than one reason, but how is disease or starvation worse that having yourself blown in half? Because it lasts longer? Because of the suffering? Perhaps. Yet there can be honor in adversity? There is no good way to die.

That aside (as it's a weaker argument than I'd care to develop...as to the wusses. You can accept death and at the same time feel a sense of loss. I come from a LOOONNGG line of stoics, and the more you care about someone the more it hurts when they are gone. You argue that we must suck it up and move on; I say we must give them their due and move on. Grief is not a sign of weakness; it is a demonstration of love. (If it's genuine.) Denying our heart is denying our humanity. If that leads you into dispair, you are having reality issues. The "Cycle" cannot be denied. However, if you cease to feel, you cease to "live" in the broader sense; you merely survive.

JQ - You ever heard of an artist named Frank Frazetta? He does a lot of really cool pictures like that one. I shoulda known it was Conan by the look of his sword.

Been a fan since the 60's. (Yes, I am old, in case you forgot.) His is a remarkable story, besides being a remarkable artist. (In his view, he's basically an athlete that could draw pretty good. Just a few years ago he had a crippling stroke which totalled his drawing hand. He "simply" learned to draw with his other hand and I defy anyone to tell the difference!)
His Conan works are amazing.

My late Uncle was a huge fan of Frank Frazetta and Sergio Argonnes. I practically grew up with Conan and Groo. I think Frazetta influenced so many contemporary artists that even they have no clue where the influence comes from. That and I think I can blame him for also for my attraction to certain females. Who'd a thunk it.

I never did Groo, although I knew of him. Sergio has a fantastic wit, if you've ever bothered to look at the "Marginals" in an old issue of MAD Magazine. (they might still be there but I don't do Mad anymore either)

At the risk of incurring CMH's wrath, there ain't nothin' like a Frazetta girl!

I haven't seen MAD in years, but I remember only because I recognized the art from Groo.

The Frazetta women seemed to have a story, task, goal, a certain reason other than just looking good in a single frame. A complete story in in a moment of the mind.

WOBBLY TABLES ARE EVIL!!!! THEY ARE EVIL AND MUST BE PUNISHED!!!

Half an hour before I was due back at work, I decided a massive mug of steaming hot chocolate would be the *perfect* relaxing pick me up before I had to go back to teach a class.

Sooooo very wrong!

The sodding table I chose to sat down at in Starbucks was wobbly. I sat down and the table literally catapulted my hot chocolate at me! ALLLLLLLLLL over my white shirt and blue jeans!!! And it was HOT!!!!

Wow, I've been catching up. I was intrigued by the entire, reasoned discussion of feminism. By the time I got to the end and was ready to post it's RIMG and Tristan making cracks about wet T-shirt contests. *Sigh*

Seriously, all sympathy for your predicament, DTH. But it is funny because it's not me.

BTW, I'm an engineer and my husband is a stay-at-home dad/writer. He has trained me over the years to say what I think. He has to kill the bugs. I hold doors open for people or walk through when they hold them for me. That's just polite. But it bugs me when people in front of me wait for me to exit the elevator first. That's just inefficient.

Oh, and I draw the line at a guy whose scabbord hangs down in front of the codpiece. That's just compensating for something.
