You may or may not know of these (some may not be considered Southern by everyone): Fried chicken (or just about any vegetable or dessert or meat), Mint Julip, greens (collard, turnip, mustard, etc), squash casserole, sweet potato casserole, boiled peanuts, ribs, bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, creamed corn

I cannot think of any others right now, though there are many.

EDIT (mostly just thinking of things we have at my grandmother's house or family reunions): peach cobbler, any other fruit cobbler, pecan pie, any dish involving 'Cream of something' (thanks MSG), chicken and dumplings, Coca-Cola salad, grits, sausage gravy and biscuits

EDIT #2: Good morning Kelkhil!

MSG - it's a tall (12 ft?) metal statue of a naked man who is less than optimally endowed and an asian woman with her hands on his equipment (though it looks bigger by comparison because of the statue's height)

Nope not a green peanut in sight...we have the stupid roasted ones in cans, but nothing else. Can't be gotten for love or money here...sad isn't it. Also, we have to have grits mailed to us because the only kind you can buy here are instant in the packet ones. We only just got Krispy Kreme 2 years ago...I live in food hell:( Nothing good to eat. All pizza places close by 10pm, and most restaurants are closed on Sunday. There's a reason why Utah is the green jello( jelly for the brits) capital of the world.

Ughhh, I forgot you lived in Utah. I suppose you do have a good reason for it though.

Roasted peanuts in cans suck. My uncle moved from a very rural town in the southeast of GA to Detroit, and every time he would come down he would take grits and cans of boiled peanuts back up with him.

The only thing I have within walking distance of me is fast food. Within three blocks of me there is a McDonalds, Runza, Taco Bell, Taco John, Subway, Burger King, KFC. Not exactly high quality food that I feel like eating...ever. Never eaten Runza before, but my sister says that it is good and she eats organic crap all of the time, so it can't be too bad.

Apparently you have a magic server LA"_ No one else has been able to log in for hours. HUGS and I'm sorry you feel crappy. Wish I could send you take-out from the Thai place down the block. They make amazing Tomka

1 quart chicken stock
1 stalk lemon grass, white part only, cracked open with the flat side of a knife
3 kaffir lime leaves, fresh or dried, hand torn
1 (3-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
2 small Thai chilies, halved lengthwise
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 (13-ounce) can unsweetened coconut milk
2 tablespoons Thai fish sauce (nam pla)
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 (8-ounce) can straw mushrooms, rinsed
4 limes, juiced
1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Bring the stock to the boil over medium heat in a soup pot. Add the lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, ginger, chilies, and garlic. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and gently simmer for 10 minutes to let the spices infuse the broth.

Uncover and stir in the coconut milk, fish sauce, sugar, mushrooms, lime juice, and chicken. Simmer for 5 minutes to heat the chicken through; season with salt and pepper. Ladle the soup into a soup tureen or individual serving bowls. Garnish with cilantro. Be careful to avoid chewing the lemongrass, ginger, or lime leaves.

I am here for a bit doll, and I will also help with the upkeep of the smoking room, since we are the only two who presently use it.

Checker's have pretty decent food, and they are the same restaurant as Rally's and Central Park. Their burgers are better than the other fast food places, and their fries are some of my favorite in the 'verse, with little crispies on them. Yum. I am considering going out for steak tonight, since I have been craving it and gyros since we talked about them in the threads the last few days.

* gets himself another bottle of Jack, taking a long pull from it, then resumes the shoulder rubbing *

EDIT: Though I have never had any Thai food, that recipe sounds delicious MSG (as all of your recipes do)

I can cook well ,but I have a long & narrow kitchen with no counter space, which makes it difficult and unenjoyable. My speciality is a full Italian meal with antipasto, garlic bread ( I've been told mine is the best in the verse !) Fresh roasted peppers with mozzerella ,and of couse Lasagne ! I'll make it at the cabin which of course has a large modern kitchen.

LA, you asked what a Runza is. RedLava never came back to answer you. Since he just recently moved to Nebraska, and since I was born and raised there, I figured I could fill you in on the Runzas.

Runzas is a fast food place that was started in Nebraska. The specialty was a runza (also called a bierock) which is a yeast dough bread pocket with a filling consisting of beef, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings. They can be baked in various shapes such as a half-moon, rectangle, round (bun), square, or triangle. In Nebraska, the runza is usually baked in a rectangular shape. The restaraunts now offer a wide variety of regular fast foods as well as the runzas. There are now more than 70 Runza restaraunts. Most are located in Nebraska, but there are also Runzas in Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa.

History of the Runza:
Both the bierock and the runza sandwich have German-Russian roots going back to the 18th century. The term bierock comes from the Russian word pirogi or pirozhki and is the name for any food consisting of a filling stuffed into dough. The recipe was passed down from one generation to the next, and was brought to the Midwest of America, and particularly to the states of Kansas and Nebraska, by the Volga Germans.

Originally bierocks were served to ranch and field workers for lunch.

This is more than you probably would ever want to know about them. Well, except I always thought they sounded disgusting when I was growing up. I tried one when I was in high school. They're not bad. Some people do get addicted to them.

No sickness here, just lots of hard work and huge bushfires (gorramn serial arsonists!). And while we suffer the 38 degree days (100F for the imperialists), I note that places like Denver are sometimes lucky to be having a maximum of 0 degrees C.

As for kitchens and cooking, well, I do a lot of the cooking in this household, although our kitchen isn't as big as I'd like. That's because the house was originally built in the 1920's (gotta love those 10 ft ceilings tho) and the current kitchen is in a section of the house that used to be a balcony. Which is also why my room has a 18inch-thick brick wall (complete with window set into it) that faces the downstairs sunroom/stairwell.

Eewwwww, 100 degrees. Yuck. Give me 15 any day of the week. I love the cold, and part of it is due to the fact that you can always add more clothing and/or snuggle up with someone, but if it is too hot, there is only so much you can take off before the cops start chasing you.

Yeah, snuggling at work probably wouldn't be a good idea. Those inter-office (ship) romances are bad.

My shiny Jayne hat has done pretty well at keeping my head warm, but I am also very hot-natured. For example, I sleep in shorts, with a fan on, and can do with only a sheet.

And considering I work almost exclusively with married women and no one is on the same shift as me anyway, the inter-office romance isn't even a possibility. I have, in that time when I had a somewhat-nearby signifigant other, suggested he come and snuggle with me at work, but he wasn't interested. Besides, there's still that cold drive and such.
A Jayne hat might keep my head warm. Right now I have a very dorky fur-lined Russian looking hat that keeps my head very warm and guarantees no one will flirt with me. When GorramnDoll saw it this weekend and got that light of laughter in her eyes, I said "It's pretty cunning, doncha think?" and she cracked up. That was fun.

*edit*
And I don't wear very much for sleeping, but I tend to have at least two blankets in winter. Sometimes there are fuzzy socks involved.

Hey, I don't see anything wrong with the Russian-style furry hat, but I suppose I am a bit too far away to flirt with you (not to mention I don't work with you). You could snuggle with the married women, you never know, one or more of them may be dissatisfied with something at home. And fuzzy socks rock, though I don't personally like to wear them.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Ah, I should have mentioned that many of the said married women are rather... traditional. And they don't interest me, anyway. Even if my focus were not elsewhere, they wouldn't interest me. Probably because they're so traditional.
And I'm not going to take any pictures of the hat to prove how bad it looks, just take my word. It's very, very warm, though.

I understand the traditional married women very well, living in a small military town in middle Georgia. I have to keep a lot of my views and desires to myself. As for the hat and it's looks, I say that function is way more important than form, and if it makes you happy, well, that is all that matters.

You should've heard/seen them when they realized I was a witch. In no place I have ever worked has that been made any kind of deal, but here? Ech. I'm bad at keeping my true self under wraps, unfortunately.

Living in this town is one thing, as far as keeping my weird/unique/non-Christian thoughts to myself (there are so many churches here is it rediculous), but at work I have to pretty much keep my mouth shut, as the way I feel about my penultimate boss and the rest of the folks in DC is not too flattering, and most people here would take issue with that.

YYAAYY LA29 is up.

You live in NYC dear, if I remember right, and I am sure that no one there cares what you do as long as you aren't in the way.

You aren't the only sick one. My wife was feeling pretty bad last night, and my chat friend flywithmecaptn has been sick for almost a week now. *hugs* I hope you feel better soon.

Well, technically I don't have to keep it under wraps, as everyone knows and they 'warn' all the new employees basically straight off the bat. Do I wish I had? Not really. I don't care what they think of me, I care if I get my sacred days off. But it bugged me to find out they talked about me behind my back without even trying to understand me. I relate totally, RIMG.
*grins and blushes a little* As always, I second the hope that my qing ren will be careful. I know he is, though, so I try not to worry. sometimes I even succeed.

I've actually seen people walk around outside in towels or nothing at all.People with farm animals too.In the middle of the city, just walking around. It is one strange place. And no one notices or cares !

Sorry to hear wifey is sick & your friend too.Maybe we sould start a club !

PR _ I understand now.People not even tryiing to know what we are really bugs me too.Intolerance is way too common. And if it's ok I'll keep a prayer for your Nico going. I want you guys to be together and live happily and for that we need him safe !
