Just thought I'd put a thread up here for us unfortunates who won't be able to attend Flan2 this weekend.

I know a bunch of people over at the Serenitymovie.org board who are going and got a bunch of rooms together. Sadly, I had already gone to Moonlight Rising this year and couldn't burden my hubby with my kids for another long weekend. (He can't work with a 2 year old running around who isn't in daycare!)

So...uhm...how about some other "Why I couldn't go" stories followed by some "The best convention I went to" stories? I need some cheering up, as I'm sure we all do.

Those lucky bastards.

Oh boy oh boy, am I in. Going to Flan on the heels of a holiday vacation? Ha ha - not likely, not with the guys I work for. Besides it's way the hell over on the other side of the country, and besides that, I did get to meet Nathan at Moonlight Rising this year (and Kaele as well )...Now if Summer was going to make an appearance at Flan, maybe then I'd have tried to make a fight of it.

I found out about it too late to start saving. Plans are to be at DragonCon next year. Sure, it's farther away, but I aslo have a bit more time to get some coin!

A flanless support thread - exactly what we need!

I live in Ireland and couldn't afford the flights. *sob* I'm already saving for the next one. Well, technically I'm saving so that maybe someday I can afford a house, but if another flanvention shows up in the meantime that is so getting the funds!

Stuck on my lonesome this weekend. Stupid applying to college. I haven't been to a con before but hoping to make at least one next year. Do plan on having a nice little shindig with my friends Saturday night though.

Come on out, River. The nice man wants to kidnap you.

Woman, you are completely off your nut.

Nope, no Flan 2 for me either. Money has just been too tight. Never actually been to a con. Ok, I did used to go to a couple scifi cons when I was younger. I am saving to go to DragonCon. Shouldn't be too hard to pull together the cash now. I just might be flying solo since my hubby isn't as big a fan as I am plus the 2 of us going might be a little too much for us money wise. I really hope I can go, I'd love to see what all the fuss is 'bout and maybe meet some of my fellow Browncoats.

I have heard that distrubing rumor about no more Flans, either...which is not shiny. I was going to plan to go next year, too.

Roxy, DragonCon, eh? No hubby, though? Hmm. That is too bad. I think he would have enjoyed himself.
So...you are planning on going, eh? Wanna march in the parade with the 76th Independent Battalion? We'd love for you to!
It is worth the "fuss", believe me. Never saw so many Browncoats in one place before...although, granted, it was my first Con...still, quite impressive!

I can't go either. I'd describe myself as "sullen" at this point.

Matter of fact, I've never been to a convention at all. That's one of the drawbacks of having a job in education. If something happens, and it's not in the summer, you're sol. And then when you do have a vacation, everyone else does too, making yours more crowded and expensive.

You know, if you live on the East Coast, maybe you could catch Summer at Farpoint in Baltimore this coming February. She's appearing with the lady that played the Borg Queen in the Star Trek movie. Here's a link to their flyer. I think it's a tad more affordable too.

Yep, no Flan for me too. I had decided I would save up and go next year until I saw the announcement on the Booster Events website that this was the last one. Dammit!

No Flan for me. Don't even know much about it... and why's it called Flanvention?

Best con ever? ONLY con ever... the RingCons in WA, USA. It died due to money issues (what happens when King Theoden is scheduled to show and cancels at the last minute? $10,000 in debt. Plus, Ron's an idiot), which saddened me greatly (fortunately, I'll be able to try out Tolcon later).

------------------------------------------
RPG launcher bought in third world country illegally - $10
Landmines - $50 per
Attack/track dogs bred 1st class - $250-500 per
Highpowered assault rifles - $600 per
The look on your face when I show up on your doorstep with a bigfoot - ... Priceless

Actually, there's still a pretty good chance there won't be a Flan 2. See:
http://whedonesque.com/comments/11978

As it stands now, half of Booster Events (the company running Flan) has resigned, early registration scheduled to start about now is not happening, the hotel does not know if the event is canceled, or not, and Nathan's agents were told yesterday it was canceled, and not yet informed otherwise. BE, however, claims all is well.

Either way, I think it is pretty certain that there won't be a Flan 3. I do believe there is a Browncoat Cruise being organized for next year (ETA: by completely different people), however.

yeah i guess in a way its good im not going to flan, I would get stomach problems seeing all this. Oh and in terms of the browncoat cruise, its organized by the same guy as Done the impossible!

I loved the bit about promising to keep the money i nthe bank and not touching it until it is sure the convention is a go.

I think it's called flanvention since Nathan got muddled and called Firefly Fans "Firefly Flans" once.

Anyone in Dublin, Ireland in March can keep an eye out for me at P-Con in March! It's a Fantasy / Sci-Fi writers convention and is loads of fun.

Oh, hellz yeah, I'm planning on going to that! Baltimore ain't but a few hours out! There's also a possibility of Summer coming to Moonlight Rising next year (which is even closer), and much as I wanted to go to Dragon Con this year, had to work....So much for getting to see/meet Summer at three cons inside of a year. But yeah, definitely gonna try and get to Farpoint.

Oooooooh, there's gonna be a Browncoat Cruise next year???? *starts saving up cashy money* Man, how I love the innovation of Browncoat events.

I couldn't go because of school, transportation, and money. Finals are coming up, so going to Flan would have (almost literally) killed me; I really didn't have a way to get there even if I did have the money (it's not like I could ask my parents to skip work for the weekend or anything, and I/my parents don't really know any Browcoats that are going); and, sigh.

I've never been to a convention.

I've been to media cons...just not in the past 10 years, though.

And Dragon*Con's out since I go to Pensic in late summer. Just not enough cashy money for both.

The Par-Tay suite will be open for the weekend very soon. It tends to get a mite too loud in there for conversations, and once the clones show, not much talkin' to be had.

Well, Yinyang, take heart, for it would seem WorldCon is coming to Denver in 2008, so that one will be nice and close to you and me
And you should try to make it to D*C if you can. But if not, plan for WorldCon; it's supposed to be huge.
