Mornin fellow browncoats.

I've been pondering. With the saga of SW over seems there has become a gap where there should be a space movie for the public somewhere. Who could step up to fill this void?

That last part isn't really a question but if you have any thoughts on this or maybe have something else in mind, post up. I'd like to hear about it.

I've found since the ninties you rearly get sci-fi movies about aliens or spaceships.

Their sci-fi movies but their more humans in the future,I want spaceship battles & aliens back in cinema.

Sony are making Starship Stroopers 3 which is a step in the right direction.Don't want no more War of the Worlds, the Island(I like it),Minority Report,I Robot, ect sci-fi bull minus the Island I want proper sci-fi movies.

I thinks its just a big gamble nowadays to involve aliens & spaceships in movies cause there going to cost a lot to make apart from Serenity which had one spaceship battle & no aliens but the Reavers will surfice & it was done on a tiny budget for the type of movie it was.

I don't think it's a budget issue due to the cost of shooting space battles. Rememer that Titanic was more heavily effects laden and effects expensive than any sci fi movie outside of possibly the SW prequels. I think that the issue lies more with the decision makers in hollywood who seem to think that Phillip K. Dick is the only scifi writer worth considering. As long as they don't believe that the oppurtunity exists it in all practical meanings doesn't. They have the money, after all.

CYBERSNARK

Trouble is that space-operatic sci-fi movies are seen as a risk. Sci-fi, as every Hollywood producer "Knows," is something that only socially-inept highschoolers watch. Everybody else (i.e., the covetted 18-25 demographic) wants Action, Romantic Comedy, and Horror.

Dickian stuff (future Earth, everything shiny and high-gloss) tends to translate well to Action, glitz, and beautiful people wearing more makeup than clothes, but space-opera (starships, aliens, etc) tends more toward awe-inspiring tableaus and people in costumes having to actually act, and movie stars don't like to act, they want to play idealized versions of themselves.

I suppose its just that Hollywood always tends to play things safe with the big budget movies.
The LOTR and Harry Potter films were enormously sucessful, so last year we had `The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe` (which was good) and this year we get `Eragon` (which I dont have an opinion on, not having seen it).
This trend will probably continue until one of these fantasy blockbusters flops, then the word will start going round that `fantasy looses money` and they will then move on to something else.
Sooner or later, they will probably rediscover science fiction again.
