I didn't have many pets when I was young. My mother hated little creatures in our house. I don't recall feeling responsible for any of their deaths. Now that I think about it, most were given away before they died.

As a teacher of young children, I have had a wide variety of class pets that have been literally loved to death. I do my best to try and convince the students that we don't have a murderer in our midst. I do believe that being a class pet is a terrible life for an animal.

I kill small creatures all the time. They're called mosquitoes, and they grow as big as crows out here. If you don't kill them, they suck you dry of your blood, and make a hundred more like the first one.

When it comes to non-vampiric animals, those that I kill were purely by accident or for safety purposes. We have purebred dogs, and there are coyotes in the countryside, as well as other, sometimes vicious dogs. They won't leave with just a good scolding. Is it strange that there are more guns in my house than there are members in my immediate family?

Workplace Relationships: I can't voice an opinion on this. I don't know enough about the phenomenon.

Years ago they got into selling baby ducklings for Easter. Well that went over like a lead ballon. I believe it is actually against the law to sell ducklings in a pet store around here. So young children and small pets are a disaster waiting to happen.

Yes, mosquitoes are evil, but without mosquitoes there would be no chocolate. A certain type of mosquito pollenates the plants neccesary for making chocolate, so even the worst animal has redeeming qualities. That said, mosquitoes that aren't helping me get chocolate should be irraticated from the earth.

I don't think that really counts as torturing animals, just a survival instinct.

Hell's Kitten, I'm sure you are right about the quote. I am never good at getting them exact. I usually stay away from using them, but I could not resist this time.

I live just a couple of blocks south of UWM. The fashionable east side.

EDIT: Just got the upgrade on my Windows Explorer and I am still getting ued to it. Of course they had to move things. It would be asking to much if the kept all the bells and whistles in the same place.

Well they charged for everything else. Give me a pizza joint anytime. having someone hovering over you with a water pitcher gets annoying after a while. I think I said thank you twenty times during that meal. I was beginning to think there was something on the bottom of the water glass they did not want me to see.

We have great pizza joints in Milwaukee. The east side used to be an Italian neigborhood. Now I'm hungry for Italian cuisine. Will have to go to Lisa's tomorrow. Best Italian food around. And cheap.

Friends of the opposite sex Yes, it can be done. The guy I share a cubicle with and I have been friends for over 20 years (we knew each other before either of us worked at our current place of employment) and neither of us have tried to make our relationship anything other than just friendship. Actually, at the moment, he's on his....hmmmm....fourth or fifth girlfriend since we met at a comic convention. We just like our friendship as is. We also ocassionally throw 'imponderables at one another' of the "why do guys/girls do "X"' sort of thing.

Confession timing I also think that waiting until you're asked is the best solution. Someone you're only dating a few times and fast discovering you're not at all compatable really doesn't need to know that you once fried ants with a magnifying glass (yeah, I'm guilty of that one, too) or whatever. Someone you're becoming strongly attached to emotionally, does. CMH, while I applaud your honesty and up front behavior, letting someone get to know you a bit first, would probaly increase the chances of her reacting with sadness for you at such a tragic mistake, since she'd then have enough time to understand that the person you are would not knowing and cruelly do such a thing. (I'm also with MsG that the counselor let you down tremendously and should not be in that profession. Anyone in that profession should be able to understand the difference between deliberate cruelty and an unintentional harming due to a lack of understanding from immaturity. Any one in that profession who couldn't see that needs to get the boot and find a new job.)

Deliberate animal cruelty is very rarely a single incident. It is a pattern of repeated cruelty. An example of such: last winter in the Ann Arbor area there were the remains of a number of animals who had been tortured to death by a human. These were multiple animals killed in an identical way, with the size of the animal gradually increasing (if I recall correctly--JQ correct me please if I'm misremembering--the last animal found was a coyote.) The authorities have been unable to identify the perpetrator, and they are rightly concerned that the person responsible is working their way up to human beings.

We need mosquitoes for chocolate?! *picks jaw back up from desk* I thought the little bloodsuckers were only interested in mammals. Is it an accidental pollenation or are they little sapsuckers?

Traveler...over here it's wait a few minutes for the weather. I've gone into the post awful while it was sunny with few clouds and when I got out five minutes later it was dark and pouring rain. Dunno about you but we're suppose to have balmy temps (40 degree range) for the next few dyas here. But then, we've been lied to before.

delight in walking in such a way, especially after some rain, that I step on as many as possible in an 'accidenly-on-purpose' kind of way! Oh, and I just roll my eyes when the boys I nanny use their magnifying glass to burn ants... is that wrong of me? Am I raising a generation of sociopaths?

Add to my list of things it's OK to kill, spiders (as long as they are larger than an ant... the tiny little ones are cute, but they can get as large as your hand-span over here!), centrepedes (yuck!), mosquitoes & flies, (arrrrrgh!), slaters (do you have those over there? http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/bugs/resources/orders.aspx?orderID=31#bug ), cockroaches, or
anything that is in my house, which in the natural scheme of things is invading my territory... (or if it just gives me the creeps) or mice which I usually do in the most impersonal way possible... or just get someone else to do it! No, seriously! I have taken responsibility for the death of these little vermin from time to time...

even made sure a rat in our compost bin came to a sudden end once!

I don't think I answered the 'when to share dark secrets' thing... I think it is natural, human nature to present the best of yourself initially in order to impress someone or gain their interest at least, then once they have got to know you enough to like you you can start to share the more difficult aspects of your personality, family, past or present... Hopefully they will take it well...

I have managed one brief, but successful friend with benefits relationship once in my life - we had specific rules and talked heaps and it was brief because ironically after months of celibacy for both of us, we shared two weekends of 'mutual benefit' and then both met people we went out with... then one or the other would be involved with someone - we keep in touch though he lives interstate these days! Hi, Magda, I'm fine. I saw the Bedlam Bards on Tuesday. They were on their way to Flan 2 now the BBB. I love their music and wit. It's good to see you got a few minutes on the computer. Is your Dad at work right now?

The slaters look and sound like rollie pollies. They are crustaceans that are Terrestrial Isopods commonly known as Pill Bugs or Sow Bugs. Children call them rollie pollies. I couldn't find anything that said a slater was the same as a rollie pollie, but they are probably related if not the same bug.

Let's not talk about spiders as big as your hand span. You don't want to scare me from taking my trip to Australia, do you? The thought of BIG spiders is pretty terrifying. Eeeek!

Grin! My mum didn't think it very cute when I kept bringing them into her hotel. She unknowingly had a shower with 20 geckos stuck to the ceiling once!

Did you know that if you stick a lizard's leg onto the tail stump it will fuse and even function (nerve regeneration the like of which we can only dream of). I have not tried this I hasten to add - sometimes scientists can be cruel too.

RIMG, in my classroom we do get a few crickets now and then. The children love to catch them. I always have them take them outside, and let them go free. At my house I don't have any little bug catchers, so my home is an automatic death camp for a bug of any kind.

Emma, I did not know that lizards could reattach their tails to their legs with nerve connections. Now I have an image of that cruel scientist holding the tail on a lizard's leg

It makes me wonder how long would you have to hold it in order for it to connect? Do they tape in on? (I can not find an emoticon for tail reattachment.)

Hm. Yes. The more I read everyone else's response, the more I rethink my own. I'm still a proponent of honesty first. Yet, I understand the desire to establish trust in the other person before revealing certain things. So, yeah, absolutely complete honest disclosure on Day 1 isn't necessary. Nor is it the best idea, cuz that can be seen as kinda creepy.

I guess it comes down to this for me: if your secret is so horrible that you actually think it would adversely affect any relationship, and you don't tell me right away (meaning, once we start dating and waaaaaaaaaay before sex), then you're denying me the right to choose who I want to be with. And I guess that's the part that bugs me most.

But it DID! It's bowlmate died and it was so sad that it kept crawling up onto a rock out of the water, trying to dry itself up! I couldn't take the rock out cuz turtles need things that aren't just water. I kept putting it back in the water, but it kept crawling back out...!...*sniffle*...it was determined to end its life. *weep!*

In my house everything but spiders die ! We've got roaches with that NY attitude of "we can go anywhere -what you gonna do about it - you wuss ?" And huge waterbugs as well.I learned at a young age that it was them or me.So I gave up my squeamishness.
But I can't say I've ever intentionally or not hurt any animal .

I'm doing great. I've been busy reading all of the reports about the canceled Flanvention 2, the Browncoat Backup Bash (BBB). It is so inspiring how the BDH came out without pay. Have you been reading the info? I don't want to repeat all of it here, but it is so awesome.

In real life, I've been watching movies and trying to do some house cleaning this weekend. I did chaperone a 7th and 8th grade dance on Friday night. It was so much fun watching the early stages of the mating dance.

It was a very good movie.But the fighting was abit much for me. I'm very girly girl with certain things.Voilence being one of them.I didn't get that part.Husband said it's a guy thing .So I guess I'll never grok it.

Doesn't mean I won't like a movie for it though.I loved Natrual Born Killers for instance.

Don't you go stsrting one of those things ,you ! Or I'll come there & fight you.

I have watched Fight Club. I didn't when it first came out because of the violence. I had several friends say that I might like it. I did, but I did fast forward through a lot of the fighting scenes. RIMG, don't tell be if you start one. I think I'd worry too much.

The movie I'm watching right now is one of my favorite Christmas stories, Noel. It was written and directed by Chazz Palmiteri, my favorite gangsta' actor. It has Susan Sarandon, Alan Arkin, Robin Williams, Penelope Cruz, and others. It's a quirky little tale with a little bit of a mystic touch.

Sorry, I'm normally decaffeinated, but took a Vivarin as I was zoned while driving yesterday morning and it turned out to be far too much caffeine. I ingested it at 9am or so. I was still vibrating at 4am this morning. I was so wired I was typing run-on sentences.

Bugs inside. Mostly I squash 'em. Spiders that behave (ie: don't roost in my bedroom) get to live. They eat other unwanted pests. Other bugs go *squish* except lady bugs. Those I take outside and let go. (And no, the new ladybugs have *not* bitten me for doing this. They've been very well-behaved if somewhat prolific due to the abundance of aphids.) I do not want anything in my apartment that can crawl inside my ear (GAH!!!!!) which happens far more often than you'd think. Add to the wiggy factor that said bug perps are usually cockroaches. *shudder**twitch*

Roller bugs. I've put than outside at times, too. they're harmless.

Centipedes. Nothing except the Luggage should have that many legs. *shudder*

Mice. We'd get them ocassionally when I lived at home. I'd get startled, but wasn't overtly upset about them as my mother and sister were. So they either got squashed in a trap or died from d-con (rat/mouse poison).

Hell's Kitten--We had an angelfish that jumped out of the tank almost nightly. We'd find him in the morning, still alive and plop him back in the tank. One night he must have got ahead on his schedule as he was stone dead when we got up.

RMMC - That is too funny ! A fish commiting suicide ! OH my ! I was at a holiday dinner once & the host's bird flew into the soup & died.It was so funny ( in a sick demented way ) ,yet appitite killing too.
Who knew there were so many suicidal animals out there !

VE -Being Human is one of those rare gems.And if you like Robin Williams ,you won't be disappointed !
