Forgive me if I re-state what I'm sure all of you consider the obvious. I am 48 years old... a fan of science fiction all my life. I have come to know Firefly only in the past couple of weeks, because I downloaded the first episode (made, not aired) "Serenity" from Amazon's Unbox. Never... and let me emphasize this... NEVER have I been drawn into a show so quickly and so completely. The characters, the writing, the effects, the music... every frame is an absolute work of art. My regret is that I did not discover Firefly when it was first introduced on what must surely be a brain-dead network. How did they let this go? I am dumbfounded. Even Star Trek TNG got the chance to develop it's characters and stories, something it desperately needed. The first 2 seasons of that show were completely lame and the characters 2 dimensional. Yet Firefly, whos characters and story were nailed from the beginning, gets no such consideration. I like to consider myself fairly intelligent, yet I cannot begin to fathom their thinking. I have a love for this show. I bought the DVD set and the movie, Serenity, and am almost all the way through the show. Just this morning, before worked, watched "The Message". I keep waiting for an episode that disappoints... I'm still waiting.

Thank you, Mr. Whedon, for giving us this wonderful gift.

P.S. Under possible penatly of being banned from this forum, I will admit that I cheated and watched the Serenity movie before completing the series. ASTOUNDING! Another bravo to Mr. Whedon.

Welcome home, Jeff58!

I personally love stories like yours...and now you know why the Browncoats are a thriving community years later. We are all types, all races, all ages, and we are all Whedonites.

There are all sorts of people on this site - fans who watched it first run on tv to people who discovered Firefly because of the movie. No worries when you found it - just be glad you did!

Share your love of Firefly with someone else. It's the best way to recruit!

Dig into Firefly further. Watch the viral videos. Read fanfic, the Visual Companion, the books Finding Serenity. Look at some of the guerilla marketing efforts online and try them yourself. Read the unaired script, Dead or Alive, on this site.

We're glad you are here! Post well and post often.

EDIT: Here's the link for Dead or Alive. You'll notice that bits and pieces of it were transformed into other scripts, particularly The Message.

Welcome to the site! We are glad you found your way home. It's always shiny to welcome new people to help hold the line.

Oh, don't feel bad about having watched the movie first...same thing happened to me! Serenity, and then I had to watch the series...over and over again. It is addictive, that's to be sure!

Again, welcome to the site. Enjoy your stay, and I hope to see you in some of the threads around here!

Welcome, Jeff58 to out shiny corner of the net!

Please let me offer you a drink in welcome.

You're never too late when it come to finding Firefly, when you find it it was the perfect time for you.

We always love having new folks about. New ideas, new viewpoints. Unlike a lot of other fandoms, you'll find folks are always willing to discuss something that they have previously as with time, your opinions can change, or maybe you noticed something that you missed the previous 20 times you watched an episode.

Welcome again to the site. Either FollowMal or DonCoat should be around with a shiny virtual browncoat for you. It may take a day or two...lots of folks were out of town last weekend for the Flanvention that wasn't (a convention that was cancelled less than 24 hours before it was suppose to be happening.) Lots of folks are also indulging in the Firefly marathon on the SciFi channel today.

Have a wonderful night!

It's really not a problem to watch the series/movie out of order...I watched them all way out of order, the first one I saw was actually Out of Gas! So, yeah, the important thing is that you found the show, and you now love it as much as the rest of us do!

Welcome to our corner of the 'verse. FollowMal usually pops by with a perfectly fitting virtual browncoat as a welcome gift, but since she's busy....

Thank you all. I do indeed, feel very welcome. I just finished that last of the episodes. I do need to clarify that I watched the first (pilot) episode, and then the movie, and finally I have finished with the series. I want to say that I have never attached myself emotionally to a show before. A Star Trek fan from it's original run on NBC, but never a "Trekkie". Yet this evening, as I watched a bounty hunter threatening our little Kalee with rape, and a tear ran down her cheek as she shook in fear, I heard myself say, out loud, "Don't you dare you son of a -----!" Out loud, mind you. A first for me.

What an experience. I am hooked now, to these characters, to the actors, and to this remarkable show.

Welcome to the fold, Jeff!

And guess what... there is a comic book series!! Dark Horse comics put out one issue before the movie came out, and they just announced that they are going to continue the series. The name of the only issue that's out right now is Serenity: Those Left Behind. You can find it on Amazon.com. It takes place between Objects in Space and Serenity, the movie. It explains why Book had left the ship. Have fun!

Welcome to the 'verse Jeff. My name is Mark and I'm 27. Firefly is my favorite show ever, rivaled only recently by Battlestar Galactica.

I've always had that Sci-Fi geek bug in me because I read my old man's copies of Phillip K. Dick short stories and Issac Asimov and the like.

I agree with everything you said about the show. The only answer that I could come up with for why they would cancel the show is that because it was obviously so anti-centralized government somebody had it played out of order and destroyed before it even got the chance to run. I'm not sure if you knew that it was run out of order, but on the DVD collection the back actually tells you the intended order of the show and also the order that TNWSNBN played it in. I don't know the order myself, but if you wanted to know and didn't have the disks, I'm sure somebody would be happy to oblige you.

Welcome Jeff, it's nice to see a new fan in the forums. There are new fans on the Firefly forum all the time. Imagine how much success the network would have had if it had introduced Firefly to everyone that goes to bed before 10.00pm. I agree with you about Firefly having really good story-lines and excellent characters. The characters on Firefly are also really unique characters. I don't think there has been anyone quite like Jayne. Even on Planet of the Apes there isn't much similarity between Jayne and the Planet of the Apes humans.

Jayne was so cleverly played by Adam Baldwin. I think I read somewhere that Adam Baldwin, "Jayne" thought of Jayne as having ape-like expressions. He's also had a bit of a longing for home and missed his mum. This was seen when he received that orange hand knitted beanie and mail from his mum. He took care of Mal. He was such a great character. Aren't they all.

God help me, I've started over again already. I watched the pilot again last night. It appears that the shows only get better with repeated viewing-- "problematic". I have been married for 25 years to a beautiful and remarkably understanding woman... I fear this may test her understanding.

The word has got to get out about this show. I have many bonified science fiction fan friends who say they have never seen it. I thought it was just me who was out of touch enough to have missed out on this treasure for so long.

I have invited one of them to come over on a weekend very soon for a Firefly marathon. I know he will become hooked as well.

Welcome to the club, Jeff. Yes, I too am a HUGE sci-fi fan, and until last year, I had never heard of Firefly before. It's like a hidden treasure, and until you discover it, you don't know what you're missing.

Unfortunately, while anyone who I get to sit down and watch it ends up liking it, I've never had ANYONE become obsessed with seeing this "verse" continue like myself. That's why I'm on this message board, along with others because there are great fans on here that have the passion for the show, and want to promote it in the chance that we really can make a difference and make it continue!

My wife. Hmmm.... My wife never sits down long enough to REALLY get into a show... become attached to a show. However, I feel that if I can hogtie her long enough to watch 3 or 4 episodes, she will have a better understanding of my obsession. She has seen parts of the pilot episode. She knows some of the characters by name. But that is about the extent of it right now. I have two sons, 10 and 15, who like it and watch it with me. I do have to be careful of the 10 year old and some of the content, but he knows when to plug his ears and/or hide his eyes.

I notice you guys using some of my favorite lines from the show. There are so many gems in the dialog... simple lines that stir the emotions. It is one of the most well-written shows ever made.

Well I agree ya wonder how a show like this was cancelled. My theory it was a year after 9/11 and adults were not concerned with an escape on tv. I know I wasn't. My attention was to the war on terror. What I remember of FF at that time probably another Andromeda series and I didn't care or have the time. I got into it when it came on the SciFi Channel in 2004. My life was thrown in chaos for awhile because of 9/11. With FF time slots being thrown around too I can see why it just didn't catch on fire. But this show makes sense of life in the future. The little guy in space. Star Trek is so lame now to watch except STos is still good.

I understand. My wife has watched the entire series and BDM too. She's a fan. Just not the kinda fan that I am. The reason for my above post to J.

I have 2 sons also. Both in their early 20s. They have watched some of the show and liked it. But for now they are more into dates, cars and paintball.

SHINY to have you here and for one thing(after 25 years of marriage too) to have your wife sit and watch the show because she wants to is good. But to push something that we like so well onto another person isn't. I know that you know that as well. Getting her to watch a couple eps or three I think will work and if she enjoys it as much as my wife, well "I think we can call that a win."

Yes! That was my feeling when I heard of a new show, Firefly. I guess Andromeda wasn't out very long at the time, and I felt is was going to be another in that same genre. I didn't care for Andromeda myself, and so was not interested in trying Firefly. I could not have been more wrong in my assumption. And yes, the shock of 9/11 was still with us and affected me the same way. I wasn't ready for anything new.

Jeff,

Another way to stay current on news and such is to listen to one or more the Firefly/Serenity podcasts. The Signal podcast just won an award for best produced podcast. The Signal, along with FireflyTalk are a couple of VERY good podcasts that help fans like you and me keep some sanity and motivate us that there is still hope for something more out of the Firefly "verse."

If you don't know what a podcast is, it is simply an mp3 that will play on your computer, or Ipod, or any mp3 capable player.

Here's some links:

The Signal: http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/
FireflyTalk: http://fireflytalk.libsyn.com/

Download a couple of shows and give them a listen. Episode #23, the latest, of the Signal is a Holiday special, where they joke and have fun, but all the the episodes prior are the "normal" style that you'll see every episode.

I hope this helps!

Welcome, Jeff58,
We're glad you found your way to FFF.net. We are a friendly group. If you ever need anything, just get on the Cortex and send us a wave. There is always someone around.

You have found the right place because we are as obsessed about Firefly as you are. The awesome part is that the actors and actresses from Firefly are as committed to the 'Verse as we are. Last weekend the Flanvention 2 was canceled, and the California Browncoats organized a Browncoat Backup Bash (BBB) with very little time. There were several of the actors and actresses that showed up with no pay. It was inspiring to read some of the threads from people that were there.

I don't know if you've picked it up yet or not, but the characters are called Big Damn Heros by Zoe at the end of "Safe," and that term has stuck. They are our BDHs, and when "Serenity" the movie came out, it became known as the BDM (Big Damn Movie). Our BDHs love the 'Verse as much as we do!

As a new browncoat like yourself, I gotta say this community, that is any browncoat community, is one of the best, nicest, and friendliest you'll meet in your whole life.

I've been at it for a few weeks myself, and have watched the series about three times so far... I put it off this week due to finals, and throughout my final exam this evening I kept on thinking about funny things in various episodes and resisting changing the entire topic of my essay to one of Firefly (which would be fun, well written, and likely result in a fail grade).

Welcome Jeff58!

Being a Browncoat is addictive. You'll watch the episodes at least a few times more this year. And then you'll start getting all agitated about there not being anymore. But you won't want to watch the episodes *every* day, so you'll start rationing yourself to two episodes a week. Ok maybe three.
Then you'll find that random lines of dialogue would start popping into your head. Like "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!!" whenever you see the FOX logo.
"Shiny!" will come up often.

Frustration will from now on be your constant companion. And when it gets too bad, you will come here and find other Browncoats and everything will be better.

When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl......well, you know the saying.

Thanks all. It is so nice to find people who are just as obsessed about this as I am. What is it about this show?! We've esablished the writing is excellent, as is the cast, the music, the effects and the brilliant camera work. But there is something more I find difficult to put my finger on. These people have a quality that makes them seem as if you have always known them. They are real and likeable (yes, even Jayne). You instantly sympathize with them and want to know them. You feel every emotion they do (wow, does this sound strange). Again, this is the first time I have attached myself so completely to any show.

My older brother got me interested in science fiction when I was little. I ordered the DVD Series and movie for him yesterday. He told me he has never seen it.

I'm a few years older than you, so my sci-fi geekdom is well established...going way back to the fifties with Alfred Hitchcock, One Step Beyond, TZ, OL, all the Treks, Space 1999, UFO, etc etc etc. I feel just like you...Firefly is in a class all by itself...there's NEVER been writing like that for any show, never been adult wit & humor without political corectness like that show, and never, never had characters that you cared so much about....I mean honestly....the last TV characters I really cared about were Casseopia, Sheba, Boomer, Apollo, Starbuck, Athena, and the rest of the gang from the 1978 Battlestar Galactica 22 episode series.

Keep watching the shows...they NEVER get old..in fact they ALWAYS get better as you learn more of the 'verse, and all the amazing relationships these great actors portrayed so brilliantly....I especially am fixated with the Inara / Mal thing...she is so amazing in so many episodes...like I said just keep watching them!

Cheen jeen.

SHINYED

Hi VerseExplorer,

I just wanted to tell you how much I love your little signature thing with Christina & Nathan doing their wedding night thing....one of the hottest scenes ever...and also one of the funniest.

I'm also a bit jealous, because as kind of an old fart who's a computer idiot, I wouldn't have a clue how you manage to create such a cool logo.

Sie-Sie,
Ed

Hey Jeff, welcome to the site! - always glad to see new recruits here.

I agree on your comparison of Firefly to Next Gen. Even Joss' two other shows - Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly - were a bit shaky to begin with. Firefly was excellent from the very start. It's an absolute crime that it was cancelled.

Glad to see another sci-fi geek on the board. I'm looking forward to reading your posts!

Hi, ShinyEd, thanks for the compliment of my signature pics of YoSaffBridge and Mal. It's my all time favorite scene. I actually have 3 of them that I alternate between every once in awhile. I am probably of similar age, but of course being a woman I'm like a fine old wine. Mature and in my prime.

I don't have the talent or equipment to make the signature clips, but the wonderfull and talented DeskTopHippie, who posted a note right below you, does. She's the one who made me my signature graphics. As you can see from her signature, you can go to her website for more information. "Graphics available at www.desktophippie.com " She custom made mine. I'm adding it to this thread because there are probably other newbies that might be interested in finding out about signature pics.

I think part of the reason we feel so attached is because of the commraderie in the show. All the characters really form a type of family on that ship, and they can kind of escape on Serenity. I think everybody searches for that in some way or another.

Did anyone else go through a series of feelings when you first discovered Firefly?

First I got excited having found this beautiful gem. I wanted more and more. I came here to find more and more. Then I thought, we've got to get it back on the air. That all happened within a week. Then I got depressed thinking that some of you have been out here for 4 years! Then I got angry at the network. Very very angry. So angry I didn't want to torcher myself by watching it ever again. Then I felt a loss of a great friend and slowly can back. I hope I can one day find peace like some of you. Its only been a month and a half for me.

Yes, absolutely. I've liked and loved other tv shows in the past, but no show has ever sucked me in like Firefly.

My NonCoat friends (who like the show) just don't understand how such a short-lived, half-season series + movie continues to hold a fanbase...and CONTINUES to expand. I've tried to explain, but they just don't get it.

I'm new to the Serentiy/Firefly experience too. I'm 16, and had Buffy drip fed to me by my big brother, so big Joss Whedon fan already, but I'd only half heard of Firefly; I saw the series a couple of weeks ago at my boyfriends house when a friend of his brought it round. I refused to go home until I had watched all of it, and now I want my own copy. Looks like it's going to cost me a lot though, I'll probably have to go the e-bay route.
But damn, I love it, and can't figure out why it got cancelled!

FYI - You can get it from Amazon.com right now for 19.99, and I think Target has it for that price too.

I watched three episodes again today. I am trying to determine my favorite. Never have I had such a difficult choice. Every episode is GREAT. So I will try to give a few favorites (in no particular order) and the reasons why:

The Message: Stirring, tear jerking. Jaynes hat. Poor Simon's awkward time with Kaylee by the cow fetus. Favorite line: Mal - "They don't like it when you shoot at 'em... I worked that out myself."

Safe: Heart wrenching. Simon climbing up on the plateform to hold his little sister and saying so matter of factly, "Light it." Favorite line: Mal - "Looks like we got here just in the knick of time. What's that make us?" Zoe - "Big damn heros, sir." Mal - "Ain't we just."

Ariel: Powerful. Illuminating. Favorite line: Zoe: "Clear."

As I feared, the more you watch them, the better they get. The 'Verse has got me... no question.
