If Carson had been a girl he would have been Chloe. I love that name. Still different but pronouncable and feminine.

We almost named Carson "Brett" but then we realized that with the middle name we had picked out his name would be "Brett Boone" - Boone being the middle name we had already picked out. My husband is a descendant of Daniel Boone.

Brett Boone is also the name of a baseball player- Atlanta Braves? so we switched gears and went with Carson James. (CJ) - We liked the built in nickname, too.

Bad funeral behavior department - How about my dad's? I'm an only child raised by my mom and grandparents. My folks got a divorce when I was 3, but separated when I was 1. She wisely opted out when his drinking turned violent. So my dad and I were never "close" in the usual sense. But each of us felt a bond with one another that was unique to us. Uneasy, perhaps, but loving.

At any rate when he died about a dozen years ago, all of my cousins showed up because "Uncle Pete" was that cool, renegade kind of uncle that played by his own rules. (Big argument for nature over nurture here, but that's for another day...) I was stoic at his funeral, however, one of my cousins decided that she missed him more than anyone else, flung herself over his body in the casket and shiek-sobbed. Granted, the cousins in her clan were all about emotion, but this was a bit much. It felt like a movie scene.

I got the "last laugh", so to speak, a few times over, though. I was presented his flag (Coast Guard), and when the site part of the service was over, with a suggestion from MsQ, I took one of the roses off his casket and walked it over to my mother's grave in the next section; united in death in a way, if not in life. The Biggest "WIN" on my part was the memorial service the American Legion put on for him in his adopted home town, with full 21 gun salute. None of the rest of the family made it to that one. It's the only funeral service where I ever cried my eyes out.

If I ended up being the winner of that competition, it wasn't for trying. I hope my cousin will learn that someday.

! That was depressing! Who brought that up anyway. CMH, wasn't it? Well, to you my friend all I have to say is on that regrettable day when we receive news of your falling, I shall go out and light a real pyre for you. It's just seems the right thing to do and it's how I feel about you.

Do we have a ponderable yet? If not, on this morose note, how or where would you like to die.
I have a willow in my back yard that's a couple of years old now. I'll be reading or contemplating under it with a cool drink. And then I won't.

EDIT: Wow! MsG, I should have known you'd come up with one. Looks like we're each focussing on the opposite ends of the circle of life! (And I want to comment on your bad senior year at some point, too; I'm so far behind!) For now super tight xxx's and ooo's

Thank you for sharing that story. I am also not close to my biological father, but unlike you, I will not be at his funeral.
I did like the part about the rose. That was a nice gesture.

When we do hear the news of CMH's passing, call me before you build the pyre...I want to be part of that.

How do I want to die? Not in battle, because I never made it into the military, but I would like to die for a good reason. I don't want to die in bed...I would like to die fighting for home, family, or friends...just not any time soon. I plan on being around to give the world a piece of my mind for years to come.

Lists are a good plan. We had a list of a few boy names ready, as we knew we were having a boy.

Funny story. Since I had a high risk pregnancy, we had a high res image ultrasound at 5 months- and we wanted to know the sex of the baby. The tech kept concentrating on a specific area over and over, and when I looked at the image my first thought was
"There's something wrong with the baby."
It looked like the baby had some sort of weird growth. She pointed to the growth area with the cursor and typed "It's a boy!"
When I asked her what the weird growth on my baby was, she said "Those are his testicles, ma'am."
I was sooo embarrassed!

To cut or not to cut?

Just read an article on the NBC Washington, DC affiliate website that circumcision rates are down to 55.1% nationwide. Way fewer boys are being circumcised now than 20 years ago.

I will weigh in. When I found out we were having a boy, we went back and forth over this issue. It was more problematic than anything else we had to tackle. We went back and forth. I was able to locate a man ( the father of a co-worker ) who was circumcised at age 40 (!) due to an accident.
He finally was able to give me the definitive answer I needed, as to sexual response. He was very open about it and via email told me that once he healed, there was no real difference during relations.
That sealed it. No difference? Than why do it? So we didn't.

Mav, honestly, I would not cut either. This topic was discussed a long time ago on this very thread...I don't remember the date, and I am not sure what we finally decided...but I know that I was against it then, and still am. Not saying it should be outlawed or anything, it's just not something I would do to a son of mine. Leave the poor thing intact!
I am surprised about the "no difference" in feelings...that kind of goes against everything I have read and heard. Huh. Thank you for bringing that forth.

So, if the felling part is no longer an issue, I guess it falls back on preference of the parents. I don't want to really get into the history of circumcision, but I vaguely remember it being at first a cleanliness issue that turned into a religious ceremony. Someone correct me if I am wrong, please.

I need to clarify the "no difference" in feeling. My source informed me that at first, he was very, very sensitive - and - um - performance time was cut way down. Once he got used to being..exposed...all of the time, he was able to have more control and eventually adjusted to the difference.

So I guess by the time a man becomes sexually active after circumcision as a baby, he has been exposed for a long time. Gotten used to it.
As an adult, it was different, and he was more sensitive at first. Once things "calmed down" he felt everything the same.
Go figure.

I say GND this morning just as I was turning the corner to work. Funny, I was running late and still took my morning constitutional (drive the long way and smoke a cigarette) and I run in to her. She was also running late. I still feel there is some strange wall, but she said she'll see me later today sometime. Is it wrong that I am already plotting my path to avoid her for just a lirttle while longer?

Anyhoo, I gotta catch up on payroll and package baked goods. The kids are raising money for the two kids they sponsored for the wishing tree. We made fifty eight dollars yesterday in 45 minutes and me alot better stuff today. This is the stuff I really have fun with this time of year. Think I might have to sponsor a kid or two myself.

msg- I thought of that, too - and how he would appeal to women.

If rates have plummeted so vastly in the last 20 years or so, it will be much, much more likely that he won't be the only one once it's time to shower after gym. Perhaps even 50/50.

At least for me, when I first saw an uncircumcised man, I was surprised to say the least. But that was 20 years ago.
Girls born today ( I think ) will be much more likely to be "not surprised".

Does this make sense?

Meself, not having a preference yet having a cut, says do what feels right to you, assuming both partners feel the same way. Like ear piercing. Like tats in "primative" societies. Circumspectly, male circumcision still allows healthy and (re)productive living as does UN-circumcision, both, er, lifestyles being in use for thousands and thousands of years. It's nowhere near in the same league as
FMG/FMC where consequences are traumatic and damaging, physically and psychologically.

Picking names is a funny business. Sometimes names just don't seem to fit. (Good for you, building a list) Sometimes a name simply demands to be given and no other will do.

Jonny- I just want a long list because we've chosen the ones we think are right, but when the baby's born it might not look like a Thomas or Isabelle so we need to have back up names on hand. I don't want to end up like my friends who couldn't decide on a name, took the baby home and called the poor thing Baby for a month before finally picking Sam( which by the way how could you spend a whole month to arrive at Sam?)

Everybody keeps saying the picture is "wrong" but nobody will tell me why? Is it really that different from those baby backpacks and, um, front(?)packs I see around? Or the swings and bobber things (slo-mo Shaken Baby syndrome machines...) or even car seats? (Be honest, how many times have you cussed one of those out because you couldn't get baby in or you couldn't get baby out??)

EDIT: My sister-in-law had son number one pick the name of son number two. Open up the baby name book and just put your finger on one. That's how John named, ahem, Aaron. Could have been much worse: could have been from the other end, Zebulon...

Jonny- you really should check out this safety catalog for babies my sis in law gets. It's got mini hazmat looking suits that cover their entire forms for them to wear to the beach. Helmets ( that look vaguely like large padded diapers) to strap to their noggins, all manner of re-arrangeable pens to keep them in, little padded crash suits for them to wear on their bikes, full body flotation devices for water time, this odd sort of bee keeperesque full body drape to prevent insect bites...basically if you'd like your child to fear all contact with the world while being constantly mocked for their psuedo psych ward attire, this catalog's for you.

I am surprised about the "no difference" in feelings...that kind of goes against everything I have read and heard. Huh. Thank you for bringing that forth.
So, if the felling part is no longer an issue, I guess it falls back on preference of the parents. As a Christian, this is one of those beliefs that other people of my faith stick to blindly. And I don't have a problem with that in itself, but when they profess to tell others about how it's a sacrament between man and God, I have to bring up a couple of things:

Another sacrament is not cutting your facial hair... ever. Do they follow that one?

Another is withdrawing from society for a week every time you have sex. Do they follow that one?

I could go on with this, but the basic premise is that these people are not only just choosing which sacraments they want to follow, but they're sticking with the one that most closely resembles mutilation.

I believe that the commands given to the Israelites from God were not all spiritual and moral commands. I believe that he intended to look after their physical bodies as well, and that because these people lived in a dry, dirty region where soap and water were not readily available, he told them how they should look after themselves. That time is long past, and what's more, Christians in the United States are Gentiles, who it was made very clear in the Bible are not necessarily held to all of the exact same commandments as the Israelites. I believe that there was a reason that 10 of them were identified as more important than all the others, and that the reason is because those are the only ones that apply to ALL followers of the One God.

MSG: As you might imagine, I have a fondness for Irish names. For a girl, one of my favourites is Tara. It's a placename in Ireland, a sacred hill where the High Kings were crowned. It's also the name of an Eastern Goddess who grants wishes, and it means "Star" in Sanskit.

Emer - The meaning isn't known, but in Irish mythology she was the wife of Cuchulainn, a famous hero.
Grainne - (graw-nya) "Beloved"

Let's not forget Tara the Plantation from Gone with the Wind in MsG's home state of Geohgia! Gotta admit, it has promise, MsG. The rest of the girl names are lovely.

I also like Quinn from DTH's list for a boy. The rest while they have a wonderful sound and rich culture behind them, probably would play well here in the Old West, especially Dara (huh, Tara and Dara...OMG!!
