GOMITHROUS

I was just reading the "Name a Browncoat - Win a Prize" thread when I thought; How did all of you come up with your names. I came up with mine while watching the Just For Laughs comedy festival on TV, they were doing a Jeapordy spoof and one of the contestants was "Gomithrous, keeper of the Chalise of the Damned", I thought it was a cool name so now I use it for everything. Gomithrous is my name for YouTube, Photobucket, J!NX and here. My dad's name for all of his boards is Chaimaera, so if you know somebody by that name on a board (his favorite one is RPGHost but I think the site moved recently I don't know what it's called now) it's probably my dad. So how did people come up with all their names?

Opus from "Bloom County" has always been my favorite cartoon...I didn't want to copy his name so I just called myself Penguin!

ISAACSHEPHERD

Mine is kind of a boring story but I made mine up when I started playing the Serenity RPG. I always liked the name Isaac. And I can never think of a last name for my character so the gm suggested Shepherd since I was going to create a Shepherd at first and I wanted him to be somewhat religious.

GLADIATOR32

Mine's quite boring. I used to play cornerback for the Colchester Gladiators American Football Club, here in Blighty. And 32 is my lucky number - and my shirt number with the club.

CAUSAL

Well, when I first joined the board I called myself "InevitibleBetrayal"--but I started hating that name pretty fast. In the first place, it was hard for people to write it all out when they responded to me in a thread. In the second, it didn't even make for a good abbreviation ("IB"? ). In the third, I didn't really control myself very well at the time, and was starting to get a bit of a bad rep. So I dumped "InevitibleBetrayal".

I chose "Causal" because at the time I was taking a course in ancient philosophy (the pre-Socratics, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle) and the idea of causality is pretty big there, particularly for Plato. So in the first place, "Causal" just had a nice ring to it. In the second place, I'm a philosophy major, and I'm very interested in the notion of causality in general, and in particular where it intersects with ideas about human freedom and ethics (after all, it would seem that if we're all just meat machines operating according to predetermined causal laws with no real freedom, then the notion of morality falls apart). In the third, I'm also a minister-in-training, so I've got some definite ideas about causality and God, and I especially like to wrap that into my philosophical studies and think about what causality means if it really turned out that God was standing at the beginning of some causal chain.

I try to use Causal on all the places I go--but every so often (maybe one in three or four times) I find that the name is already spoken for. That said, though, chances are pretty good that if you see "Causal" on another board, that's me.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Rose is my name, Phoenix is my symbol/totem/whatever you wanna see it as. 'PhoenixRose' has several meanings; my name and my totem, myself as a phoenix, and a phoenix that has risen. It means a lot to me and I use it nearly everywhere I go. Often, though, it is taken. If that's the case, I use 'FireRose' or, more recently, 'BrowncoatRose'. On photobucket I didn't think about either of those two alternates and used phoenixrosestar, just because stars are, like, cool, and have always been an interest of mine.
Totally random piece of info: After I had already adopted this as my usual screen name, my cousin was born. She was named Phoenix. Phoenix Skye. It's a great name and one I often want to steal. My aunt did not know of my fascination with the phoenix when she named her daughter.

COSMICFUGITIVE

I wanted to create a username that veered away from character names or Verse language etc. My username refers to River and Simon Tam who are my favourite characters.

It can also apply to John Crichton from Farscape. (I love that show too.)

DESKTOPHIPPIE

First starting using this name when I was working in a very un-hippieish IT related office job.

It started when I gave a coworker there a gag gift. He was an ultra-conservative ultra-capitalist guy and there was always this friendly rivalry between us, since I was his total opposite. It became kind of a running joke. Anyway, one Christmas I have him an "Instant Hippie Kit" as a gift. It was a parcel I'd put together with the silliest hippie stuff I could find, including a set of wind chimes with a sucker on them (so you could stick them to your PC monitor) a thumb ring with a CND logo, a hash leaf sticker and a bead bracelet from the Oxfam Fair Trade shop that I wound up keeping when he tried to throw it away. I also included a card that said a donation had been made in his name to the Anti-Globalisation league. I knew I'd hit the mark when he shredded it

Anyway, there was a brief moment when some of the guys at work said I should sell Instant Hippie kits (not the capitalist guy though. Strange, huh?), but I never got around to organizing it. Still, the hippie tag stuck and I started using the name Desktop Hippie online, since I was a hippie trapped behind a desktop. Now that I teach computers for a living I still use the name as I specialize in teaching older people who are nervous of technology. So I promote peace and harmony with computers. Man.

I use this name on just about every board I go to, which isn't many it has to be said. Funnily enough, it never seems to be taken... I even got a blog of the same name! Which I should update sometime this month actually... The only other name I've used is Linda_Delurked. That was a couple of years ago on a Buffy board. I lurked there for ages, but Delurked during season six to defend some of the more controversial stuff that happened in the show. Yes, my first name is Linda. Creative, huh?

I have basically no creativity when it comes to screenames...
Mine is the title of a Tori Amos song that is one of my personal favorites.

KELAI

Kelai was a name I made up. Apparently it is also derivated from KAYLEE -- "pure" and also KELLY - "warrior". So I guess It means "Pure Warrior"

Kelai was my first RPG character too.

DARKJESTER

I try to pack lots of meaning into names, and DarkJester seemed to be appropriate because...

1) I love dark humor.

2) When I joined up here, I had just recently seen "Tripping The Rift", and I loved the line by Darph Bobo, "Never underestimate the power of a Dark Clown!"

3) I suffer from occasional clinical depression, and have been told that I'm funniest, and my sense of humor the most twisted, when I'm in a funk.

4) According to oral family history, the father of my ancestor who came to America (in 1787) was a jester or entertainer in the court of a Duke in (what is now) Switzerland.

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Wow Darkjester... that is one of the most wonderful stories I have ever heard...

It's funny that you started this thread Gomithrous, because I have had a lot of fun finding out about people's posting names over on the 76th forum site... there are not two stories alike!!

Mine is more to do with when I became a Browncoat... I had just finished several months of work on the annual production of 'The Passion Play' here in Melbourne, and as the Assistant Director I had done some research into a few of the traditions of the period - I also stumbled accross the Gospel of Mary Magdela.. I originally chose the name Magdalene, but the site crashed terribly shortly after and all trace of me disappeared... I resigned and had to use a different name so I chose Magdalena because I had started to make friends here and wanted to remain identifyable...

By the way if you see either Magdalene, Lady Magdalena or Magdalena on a Firefly or Buffy related site - it's almost certainly me! I am also Private Magda Martin on the 76th forum!! (Martin being my Mother's maiden name)

Oh... and for the record - I am still fascinated with the possibility that Mary Magdalene was robbed of her early influence in the Christian Church by the male dominated, Peter followers, who went on to form the incredibly powerful Roman Catholic Church...

13

I was thirteen years old when I joined up. Fascinating, ain't it? I've gone by other names as well...

ArizonaValentine: I thought it had a nice ring to it.

CanadianLancer: Name of my brother's barb on Diablo.

DeepwaterRikun: I was playing 'Jade Empire' one day, (a game that features Nathan Fillion, BTW) and this came up for random name generation. BOOYA!

NAMES TO COME:

The Long Boy: From Stephen King's 'Lisey's Story'. Can't wait to use this. The Long Boy. Just seems to ooze mystery. Or maybe something less attractive, I'll find out soon enough.

Gevaudan: For the beast of Gevaudan, the angriest hyena the world has ever known.
