Crime and politics. Until lately they've been one and the same.

PMSL! Sorry, but that really made me chortle.

It's so sad the extremes some people will go to. As if racial/gender issues weren't enough, now people will even hate you for the TV shows you watch!

Watch out for the Brownophobes!

well, if you had to drop off a bag of poop... seriously, the woman has a problem all to her own self. i'm a big trekkie, the original, tyvm, and there's enuff love to go around for all genres. those that limit themselves to one 'verse can get mighty lonely.i'm also a bjg dr. who fan, and blake's 7, if anyone has run into that fandom too.

The real question is: IS this an isolated incident?

Has anyone’s car ever had their tires slashed; or had eggs thrown at their Browncoats uniforms; or been banned from certain restaurants or Sci-fi conventions?

Maybe this is not a coincidence. Maybe there is a disturbance in the force.
After all, before Firefly came along, Trekkies shared a big piece of the pie (fan wise). The Trek community is widespread and very organized. Then we come along with opposing views and starrted taking away some of the air in their balloon. We become organized and well-networked too. We form websites and lobbied and donated to charities. We influenced the creation of a $30,000,000 movie (an excellent one BTW). We’ve made podcasts and a million other things in such a short period of time. The Enterprise would never have used Gorilla tactics (not in the rulebook).

And worst still we have created shifts and converts to Firefly. Maybe this is one of the first signs to show that we have become a threat to the federation?

Maybe this is the first step towards escalation of arms.
Sci-Fi WARS (directed by George Lucas)
We could be facing a potential civil war between fan and fan?
Browncoat vs. Trekkie (Fortunately on the brighter-side of things, at least both sides have their own uniform.)

…But then again, the whole thing about the woman being a weirdo is a good point too (I suppose).

Actually, I've noticed more resentment among Star Wars fans than among Trekkies. A lot of that stemmed from several reviews of Serenity that described it (more or less) as what Episodes I - III could have (and should have) been.

Unsurprisingly, that raised hackles among the Lucas-Is-A-God SW diehards.

I guess that's true. SW 1-3 were a big dissappointment and many of the Trek movies were a waste of space.

Firefly is like Casablanca, lightning captured in a bottle. One of the rare occasions when everything clicks, everyone is at the top of their game and I mean everyone. While we love our BDH's a lot of love has go out to the production team who worked wonders to create the look and feel of the series. What Firefly has is something of enduring value, something precious and timeless.

SW had it and then lost it, that has to hurt. Trek is taking time out to recharge their creative batteries and about time too.

So I can understand their resentment but they should get over it and start converting their friends to be browncoats.

Guess it could be looked at in another way. The cowboy way and I'm not talkin Brokeback Mtn. here. I'm talkin Roy Rogers vs Clint Eastwood. Which is the true cowboy? Can't I like both? Well sure you can. New ground and tradition can be enjoyed equally.

I like Star Trek ( not so much a SW fan) and FF. I do like FF more but I still can like both. Are FF fans hated because we are making little ripples in a big pond. Could be but thats the haters problem. Something new and different will always be unwelcome by someone.

Yes, yes it is. This is ridiculous. There is no gang war brewing between Browncoats and Trekkers. Besides, if Star Trek fans are so well organized, why should great masses of Trek fans feel so threatened by a relatively small group like the Browncoats?

Has this kind of thing happened to you? I think what you need to keep in mind when dealing with incidents like that, is that every group has a lunatic fringe. There are millions of perfectly sane Trekkers out there.

I don't think this is a totally isolated incident. I've had problems, usually minor harrasment like muttering or people cutting in line from both Trekkies and Star Warsies. The ones I've had least trouble with seem to be the B5 fans, which as far as I can tell seems to be the closest to FF as far as real life goes (I'm talking about people and places, not the storyline here).
Here's my reasoning.
B5 has nice gritty backgrounds, yes the corridors in the ambassadorial areas are nice and clen, but they have to be, even such relatively upscale parts of the station such as the Zocalo looks more like a street market than a regular space station. They have their equivalent to slum areas too, with their "down below" area, easliy equaling places like Eavesdown docks. Even the docking bays are dark and dirty looking. This is as close to reality as a sci-fi series ever got before FF.
All the characters seem to be real people too, unlike ST, where all the characters are perfect people who look like they belong on a recruiting poster for the "shiny happy people" cult.

Most of the characters on B5 are entirely one dimentional. Joss chreated Firefly to be character driven. As such, the Big Damn Heroes are multifacited individuals. B5 is driven by its story arc and by FX, therefore JMS could present us with characters who would disapear if you turned them sideways, and no one would notice.

I like some aspects of Trek. Picard is incredibly cool, as are Worf and Data. Star Trek also had many great episodes such as "Darmok" and both parts of Chain of Command". I just think that there are flaws in the way the Trek universe is structured. Putting aside for a moment my that there are very few aliens in high-ranking positions in Starfleet (Roddenberry was right, the the main characters of any show created for the trek franchise need to be human in order for the audience to identify with them) Starfleet is almost always throwing its weight around. It has the prime directive but never seems to obey it(At least Picard and Kirk had some trouble doing so). In other science-fiction shows shows (Battle Star Galactica, Bab 5 Firefly) you get the impression that the universe is marvelously diverse. A place where things maybe grim at times, but where there's always room to party. I think I saw the crew of the Enterprise D party three times in TNG. Gawd, but Iife on Starfleet vessels must suck.

Yes that was ridiculous wasn’t it? I just got taken aback by the very idea that there could be prejudices against people within the Sci-Fi community, depending on what show you enjoy. I’ve personally have never been to a convention, so I’m in the dark to that point too. But I'm a fan of both Star Trek and Firefly.

I’m kind of hoping that woman with the dog was an isolated incident. But such is life; people will continue to be people. No matter which community you’re in.

I personally choose not to hate people. The way I see it, hating someone is kinda like burning down your own house to kill a rat. It’s really just a waste of my short and precious life (why should anyone (without reason) be succumbed to dwell on belittling someone else?)
And if I’m ever going to hate anybody; I’m going to hate him or her not for their color or their culture or their religion or background or a million other things that are irrelevant (including naming your pet River). I’m going to hate that person for who they are. For the asshole they truly are. By the actions that they have committed, today.

But the whole ‘Gang Warfare’ thing is a good laugh though. It kind of reminds me of the Unification War. One show to rule them all... kidding.

Look, maybe she was just pissed that she hadn't though of calling her pet River first, and was sorely troubled by her own lack of creativity and your strength of conviction in the Browncoat cause.

Or maybe she was off her meds. That can really mess with a body. Just ask River. The character, not the dog.

But if you see her again, you can always just give her the good ol' you, you stupid !

That might help work out some tension. Or create some. Either way, hilarity will ensue.

Zoe: What? And risk my ship?

I think it was a one enough since she was completely obssessed with Star Trek,I'm obssessed but I wouldn't care that much if somebody hated Firefly & only liked Andromeda or something.

By GOD that's one of the best story's I've heard in ages they should make it into a movie.

I was gonna make a joke about Ensign Janos (the mugato on the Excaliber), but decided it would be too obscure.
