Right,I've been wanting to say this to someone for ages so here it goes.

Why are there no Irish characters in Firefly?Just about everyone else got into space;English,Chinese,Americans,Middle eastern dudes, the whole shebang.Yet the Irish didn't get into space?

We get everywhere! We're like rats fer crissakes!

The series was cancelled before we got to the Irish planet/moon.

What criteria are you using to identify the Irish 500 years from now?

well, badger's ethnicity is pretty dubious, he could be english, irish or any one of about three dozen other things, so there could be a presence there

Whaddayah mean, no Irish characters! I think "Hoban Washburne" probably counts as Irish -- albeit without the accent -- but I'd bet "Hoban" is an Irish name...

Let's not forget about YoSafBrig. I mean, come on; a fair-skinned, fiesty, sexy redhead with a knack for brawling. It don't get much more Irish than that. Unless her real name was like Maggie or Katie or somethin like that.

So if you know any Irish or non-Irish living around Dublin, Ireland tell them about the Serenity Charity Screening being planned around June 23, 2007.

In June 2006, organizers held Charity Serenity screenings in 47 cities around the world, raising over $65,000.

I agree. We just didn't reach the Irish Moon in the 14 episodes we saw. Do you remember the ST:NG ep where they brought the "Irish" family on board, and the redhead & Riker got chummy? *sigh*

Hmmmm. Trying to envision Jayne and Mal on the Irish moon.

Thanx Paddyfly for askin' one of the questions on my mind...

I saw a banner for Irish Browncoats that had Jayne on it,(although I've seen some argument that Jayne is Scottish) but I've always thought Kaylee was more Irish. Joss's homage to Scotty?

Also, Jaynestown very Irish! Downtrodden people singing dirges, working in a clay bog, drinking heavily? No, no Irish here!

Month & 1/2 to St. Paddys day-anybody want to help brew the green Mudder's milk?

Anybody got grand plans?

Yeah, we're pretty good at losing too. And making up songs about it. Guess it was an Irish guy singing the ballad of Serenity!

Seriously though, there's no Ireland out in the black, so unless there's a New Dublin or New Cork moon somewhere then I think we've been absorbed into other races. We have a tendancy to stick together, so I can see us having a colony somewhere, same way Badger was part of a tight-knit group that kept the London accent.

And yes, there should DEFINATELY be an Irish bar!

Oooh... Serenity Charity screening in Dublin??? Kickass!!! *runs off to tell all her friends*

AH HA! I have found the Irish!

In the BDM, the guy with the fedora who says "stealing payroll isn't exactly soldiers work" and Mal says "we're all just folk now"....
is using an Irish accent! Then it cuts to the red headed woman with a distinctly Aryan child....

Yes, there are Irish in the 'verse, but unfortunately they've just been eaten, hopefully with some potatoes and a nice Irish Whiskey!

Don't forget the cabbage! oh, and here's the whiskey for it:

No they didn't get eaten...they did the eatin'. I imagine IrishBrowncoat has it...they were fightin' as Browncoats.
I think that having anyone of strictly one ethnicity by then would be a very rare thing. More likely most folks are of mixed heritage so it's probably more of what traditions folks keep, etc.
We know the music's still about as witnessed in Safe. I'm referring to the music that River was dancing to, that Joss dubbed on the FF soundtrack 'River's Dance.' *groan*

But no 'Danny Boy,' please, I beg of you. *shudders* How about 'Finnegan's Wake' instead?

You would think, as ubiquitous as the Irish are on Earth-That-Was, there'd be St. Patrick's Day parades and Irish pubs aplenty in the 'verse.

Maybe they were all (or mostly) wiped out on Shadow? That would be a typical Irish fate.

..so what nationality is "Reynolds" anyway?

We're everywhere. Can't have a mass emigration without us! Probably all sound like they're from Boston, though...

RORANIA

The family of Reynolds is Irish in origin. The early form of the name was McRaghnail, the Gaelic form being Raghnall, which is equivalent to the English names Randal and Reginald. All three of these names are believed to be derived from the Norse. The family name McRaghnail was eventually anglicized to Grannell and Reynolds, the latter being the most common.

The family is essentially Irish, having lived since early times in the southern part of the county of Leitrim, where they held lands until the end of the 17th century...

http://www.narnet.com/rfc/crest.htm

So it was Irish, but was anglicized =P

well if you consider current irish history, there are actually more Americans that claim Irish descent than there are people in Ireland, i myself being one of them, but at the same time, there are virtually zero people that are 100% Irish in America.

The world is slowly becoming a melting pot. I hear there are only 5000 pure Hawaians left. In 500 years, when Serenity sails across the skies a suppect there will be no pure ethnic groups. Just a few people who hold on to old traditions.
Oh yes; and terriers.

It is, in fact. An Irish last name, at this point.
From http://www.ancestry.com:
Hoban
Irish (Mayo): Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hÚbáin ‘descendant of Úbán’, a personal name of unknown origin.

And he looks pretty Irish, too!

(Washburne is decidedly English, though. As is 'Frye' for those who think Kaylee is Irish as well. 'Kayley' comes up as both English and Irish, so it could go either way.)
