Deepgirl: I have to agree that English isn't the best major. Unfortunately, thinking about the earning potential of future career becomes more and more important as you get older. When I had to choose a major it was all about my interests. As a 35 year old, my choice would've been more about the cash involved. You can always continue to write in your spare time...and there is relatively no pressure that could ruin your passion or interest. There's nothing like the day to day struggles of having to make a living off of your passion to put a serious damper on that interest.

My vote these days is almost always for a business degree. It is the most versatile degree and you can do LOADS of stuff, without further education. If you want to stick with English, think about a technical writing emphasis. It may be boring, but it has more of a future than just English.

Yeah there's just no real market for an English degree unless you want to teach and even then you'd best be able to coach something or be the drama or journalism teacher too. Glut on the market of English teachers. Man that sound so depressing now that I write it. I did think of some other things you can do with an English degree though. Proofreader/fact checker for newspaper and tv news or textbooks,Editor or Literary Agent, proctor for English exams... hope this helps sweety

I have a question! I doubt it's an imponderable, though:

Now, I've always understood that to "salt the earth" meant to make it unable to yield crops... a "scorched earth" tactic that basically ruins the land.

SO... how'n th'hell does "you're the salt of the earth" become a compliment? What's it mean??

For those of you just joining us, or actually reading one of my posts for the first time, I have an odd fascination with language, which leads me to think about things like this.

No, no, no. I think the "dependable, honest, trustworthy, good folk" definition came about from the New Testament. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells the disciples that they are the salt of the earth, but what good is salt if it loses it's saltiness? It was a warning to not become to similar to the non-christians and to retain their beliefs.

It has since evolved to mean good, upstanding people.

But don't forget that salt has incredible preservative powers also and was used in mummification which was done for immortality's sake. I'm right there with you on the English Major thing, though mine is worse: creative writing, god forbid.

Am I aware that i'll ruin my life doing this? Hell yes. Am I still gonna do it? probably.

My debate on this subject is as follows: I got me an offer to a semi-decent school by the name of UC Riverside, they'll pay for me tuition n all that jazz, and I can major in creative writing.

Alternatively, in two months time I'll get an answer back from UCLA, and I'm working on the assumption that i'll scrape my way in. So I have a problem. Presitious and more expensive? or not? blah. And if i went to UCLA i'd still major in english, playwriting or film. So i'm still screwed.

I suppose an English major is a bit of a pipe dream. My biggest focus here is to find a job where I don't have to live paycheck to paycheck (my family has a lot of experience with this, unfortunately). Hopefully, I can major in something that I enjoy and has earning potential.

I had the Vietnam War breathing down my neck when I graduated from high school, so I went to the first school that would give me a draft deferment. Now I design hydraulic valves for the automotive industry. It's a living. I look around the office and see the sales people doing the best as far as lifestyle goes. They appear to have better clothes and cars then the rest of us. Management gets you good pay, but it takes years to prove yourself before you get into upper management.

There are never any guaranties to a profession. I have seen companies fold and leave everyone scrambling.

Then of course technology steps in. There was a time it was very important for me to know the product I was designing. Now the important thing to know is the software the company uses. If I never designed a hydraulic valve in my life and still knew the drafting software, I would get the job over anyone who does not know how to use the software. That is where I have been lucky. I got the chance to learn the latest software and keep ahead.

When I started out as a draftsman we had to know how to hold a pencil to a piece of paper. Now I push a mouse around and click on the right set of icons to get the command to draw the lines I want. The only drafting board left in my company is used to hold the coffee makers.

So get the degree you want. If you have to, get a minor in something that will pay the bills. I know a guy who started out parking cars at the country club near his house. Now he runs the maintenance department. Earns more than me. He even lives on the country club grounds for free. Gotta love that.

When I was little my mom worked as a secretary in the Engineering Department of a small engine carburator manufacturing company. For me it was the coolest thing ever to go and visit her at the job and watch the draftsmen at work and watch the blueprints of their drawings come out of the machine. There were brownprints, too that were done by a different process for a different purpose but that all eludes me now. There was an ammonia smell and hot and bright lights in the machine as it rolled out the prints of those wonderful magical drawings. All the curves and straight edges and careful, careful printing.

Haven't had those memories come up in quite a while. Thank you. It's sad that the art is all but gone now.

Replying to the anti-crush thing from the last thread, I would have to say pretty much all exceedingly famous people. (Excluding Firefly actors

) They just all kinda get on my nerves...the way they all have to look pretty, and they aren't allowed to do/say anything wrong, and a lot of them just seem like unsavory people...but really that hate is based on the fact that our society holds people whose only talent is to entertain in the highest regard when they really do nothing most of the time. I mean come on, these people get payed thousands of dollars to go to a party! It's not like that requires any skill, it's just that people know their name! Ahem...sorry for the mini-rant...

Whitefall that major definitely won't ruin you life if it's what you will like doing! I mean it might not get you a whole lot of money, but that isn't really the key to happiness!

DeepGirl I don't really know what one would do with an English major other than teach or do journalism or something, although if you really like English stuff you could probably find something with it, but then I'm also not an expert on those things so you might be better off just not paying attention to me.

To weigh in on the English/Creative Writing degree thing, I think the major thing is knowing what you want to do after you graduate. Getting any degree without an idea of how you're going to apply it once you're out in the real world will cause you trouble down the road, regardless of what that degree is. I say, do some research -- keeping in mind that in our modern society, every single thing we encounter, from the coffee you drink to the commercials you fastward through to the servers running this very message board, is created, processed, shipped, or sold by *someone* -- and find an area that piques your interest, and work backwards from that to what degree would best support that sort of career.

It is true that you can continue to write no matter what job you land in, and these days good communication skills are important across the board. That said, I really do think that having a career that you love, and a job that you honestly look forward to going to every day, can make life so much more enjoyable.

Btw Whitefall, I know I mentioned this before, but I'm still in favor of starting at the place that gives you a scholarship, and transferring to the more prestigious school later. Your first couple of years of college are spent on general ed and the 101 level requirements for your major anyway, and the California universities are so good about transfers, it seems a shame to pass up a scholarship, even for just those first two years.

Ah! The smell of ammonia in the morning. Smells like victory. Oops; that's another story. Now they use giant copy machines. And we don't even use them that much. You send a copy of your work by Email to the machine shop who uses their own computer to bring it up and use it to program their machining centers.

The machinist is also gone. Most people standing next to a milling machine just clamp the raw material in the fixture and push a button. Oh; they have to close the door so the don't get splattered with flying chips. Then they check the part with preset gauges.

The assembly lines are mostly robots. See the first "Terminator". That movie is little old and advances in assembly lines continue.

Technology has replaced many art forms. I have to admit I had a lot of pride in my dark straight lines. You could read my drawings across the room. My handwriting was not to good, so my notes were not the best. But now I just type them in. I am thankful they don't worry about grammer. Good spelling is what they care about most. So I have a dictionary at work.

That is why I enjoy reading about MsG's classroom experiences. I'm sure teaching has also gone through changes, but the students sound a lot like my contemporaries.

A prestigious college doesn't matter so much as the education you recieve from there; and, my bet's on the two choices having roughly the same value in that respect (at least for the first two years of courses). I mean, look at people who went to Ivy League schools - they didn't get there on merit so much as on large stacks of cashy money, and it doesn't seem like that education is doing them any more good than the education my parents had [they're smart, easy-going, open-minded people (the type you can't help but like)]. As someone said in the last thread (unless I'm hallucinating), the educators don't matter as much as the educatee.

Don't laugh to hard. My school was called Acme Institute of Technology. Yes I design rockets and roller skates for Wily Coyote. Like I said in an earlier post, I went to the first school that offered me a draft deferment during the Vietnam War. This school no longer exists. Some sort of transwarp field sucked it into another universe. But I earn a living. If you drive a new Ford Mustang; it has a valve in its engine I worked on. So tighten your seatbelt and keep an eye on the oil gage.

I'm struggling with degree thoughts right now. I can't join in on that discussion without my head exploding. Right now I'm thinking about advertising, but I have also considered business or finance. It's just the slogging through thing that I have to deal with, and I do not deal with that well. English, I adore, but would not major in it. Health care, I do not adore. The thought sickens me. I have enough problems with the profession without trying to do it. (I did think briefly about studying to be a naturopathic doctor, but very few states even allow you to practice as one. Stupid, stupid, stupid...)

While DeepGirl is the one asking, any of you in school might want to read this. Or not. I'm nothing if not aware that MHO may be but sand.

While I doubt that there is any huge amount of money to be made from the English (usually the English made money off everyone else...whoa hold on now, get back, it was a joke, alright? a joke. sheesh, sensitive Brits...), I still would love to see people study and love their language more. I know, I know, the glut of majors that MsG spoke of, but I can't help but feel that it has become a default major for a lot of them, as is the General Studies or General Liberal Arts majors where they are offered. Something people fall into because, well, they speak the language and can't decide on another.

I am talking about the ones with a passion for it. The ones who enjoy putting words together and taking them apart. The ones who understand that it is a living thing that can touch another's heart tenderly or twist that heart around so that it ceases to function. The ones who realize that you can learn all about history by tracing word origins. The ones who understand that we are the keepers of a sacred flame that we dare not let be extinguished by apathy or sloth. If that is why you want to be an English major, then that is what you should be.

If you're in it for fame and riches, go with the money maker, and maybe someday the fame migh come. If you go with the English, don't expect either to come knocking at your door. But your cottage might be a happier one, just the same.

Jonny- yup it's nifty to pull the words apart and do word origins and such. I make my kids memorize the definitions of morphemes for that very reason ( though it does lead them to question why there are so many roots that mean blood)Anyway, teaching is great( ok I think so I know Rugbug would disagree, but she was teaching elementary school so that might have had something to do with it) so go ahead and get that English degree and teach kids to love it as much as you do:)

Dug- I shall assume the pendants are lovely, but as my computer will not allow ebay ( school doesn't want us going there) I can't see them. I'll try and bop over when I get home. I love jewlery:)

PR- see I can totally imagine you in marketing or in graphic art designing logos for companies because you have such a good knowledge base and you could really get into the symbolic representations

I am so happy. My cafe press order arrived and I am currently wearing a long sleeved tee with I aim to misbehave on it:)

As for the major thing, it's different for everybody. Whether you go for what you love or for what will get you the money is your own choice, dependant upon your priorities. As a photography major (how many of those do you find?) I completely understand wondering what kinds of jobs are out there, and I have heard the question "What are you going to do with that?" more times than I can count.

Another thing to keep in mind that the average student changes their major twice throughout their college career. If you later decide that something else would be better, then that is always an option. Another thing you can do is take a minor that would broaden your job abilities. Basically, you just need to do some soul searching and explore all the options, then choose what you think is right for your situation. There is nothing wrong with being an english major if that is your passion, nor is there anything wrong with being a major that would give better job oportunities.

Does anyone think my students would notice if I hid under my desk and went to sleep???

PR- hey you could always go to medical school and be an .. oh freak I cannot remember what it's called now. My brother in law is in med school and he's going to be this it's a general practitioner who specializes in preventative medicine. It's got a special title and everything.. Ok I will email and ask him. Anyway, he uses alternative meds as well as regular traditional stuff and he focuses more on keeping people healthy. It's way cool, but mostly back east.
