Mornin fellow browncoats. I felt a little curious about this question and thought I'd put it up for bid to see how ppl felt.

If you were in the Joss verse what planet would you be from? remember if you say "Shadow" you wouldn't be all "purple and bloated" but you may be burnt to a crispy critter.

Anyway do you have an idea where you may be from? Just askin.

I'd say Persephone. Nice 'in-the-middle' kind of planet. I'm not really a Rim girl, but I'm hardly Core.

Is it "city vs. country"? Or is it a degree of complacency vs. independence?

When I saw the preview for Firefly I thought that it didn't hold much promise, but I decided that I'd watch an episode or two just to see. A western for gawds sake. In space. Ugh. I thought that the core planets with all the shiny tech and "pretty" would be the place where I'd want to be. Not out on the rim with horses and guns.

But it was the spirit out on the edge of the black that really holds a place for me. Even with cows. And dust.

I can go for shindigs, sure. I love dressing up and eating fancy food, strawberries and hot cheese...
As for city vs. country, yes I think it is. The outer rim planets all look like the old west, the Core planets look like either the future or the incredibly high-priced present, and the planets in the middle (such as Persephone) look more like where I've lived most of my life. They're still Independent out there, as much as they can be. Just a bit outside Alliance control, but they've got more than blankets and hatchets to survive with. I consider it to be the best of both worlds, myself. Civilized without being totalitarian. Independent without being a never-ending struggle. You can stop judging my level of Independence now. I'm as much a fan as you are thankyouverymuch.

I didn't intend to upset you, PR.

I never really thought of varying degrees of civilization. The picture that you painted is a continuous range from Star Trek core worlds to (dare I say it) Bonanza rim worlds. Perhaps my bias prevented me from seeing it this way. I guess I was just being black/white, not shade of gray. I put your "middle" in the core.

OK. Brain adjusted. Please accept my apology.

I would want to live on Persephone too. It seems more like the sort of place that lots of different people live, and where you can work and have "roots in the community" without needing to be like a city person. It kinda reminds me of the place I actually live too.

Let's see... PR's on Persephone, so going by real life geograpy... wherever she is, I'm not far from! So, Persephone, it is!

Besides, country vs. city and Alliance vs. Independent are somewhat the same, aren't they? Or, I should say, dependance vs. non-dependance on the government, not you like the government vs. you hate it (you can have that sort of attitude anywhere; just ask River).

Let me see here, old, small, Southern town, in an agricultural area but near a big burst of population with lots of high tech and people from the Core moving in fast.

So I guess it's outside of the main city of Persephone

Well I gotta say that I am a country boy. Right now where I live there are 100 feet between houses but I wouldn't mind if that distance was more like a half mile. Persephone sounds like a nice place to visit but I'm not sure I would belong there. Also I know I said Whitefall earlier but I may want to live on a planet or moon a little more organized. Someplace where less than a mile away there was a JW's Gereral Feed Store and an AllianceMart where I could get a post-holer.

" I don't care if it has sunsets 24-7 I ain't setting foot on that fancy rock!" Core planet aren't for me and Paradiso is out of the question. Fact is not to many of the verses planets and moons look that appealing. Mostly rock and dirt. The companion planet has hills and fertile valleys but what is there to do there? After praying and having.....well that might be fun,but after 2 minutes what would I do the rest of the day?

St. Albans is to cold and I can just see myself on Jiangyin with the hillfolk...." We got ourselves a doc...are you a doctor?"

"No."

"Carpenter?"

"No."

"Plumber?"

"No."

"What's your name?"

"Z,but I have a brother-inlaw that's a lawyer."

"BURN HIM!!"

Just had a thought that is interesting (perhaps only to me...).

The core worlds unified under the alliance. Sounds, at first blush, like they are all of like mind. In Firefly there have been words that support this - I don't remember the quotes, but the gist is that everybody in the alliance happily cooperates.

In the U.S. the left coast was the "north" and the "south". Today the left coast is "unified". From the time shortly after the end of the civil war to now that didn't set well with a lot of people. The farther back that you go towards the end of the civil war, the stronger these feelings.

So there would likely be those on core worlds that, after the unification, resent the unification. Much like taking a deep south state and a northern state and forcing them together.

I wonder if this would have been a potential plot point for Firefly. Could Mal have eventually sparked a large-scale conflict between two happy core worlds?

I've lived in urban, suburban, and rural settings, and at both ends of the US.
Been on the Left Coast within sniffing distance of the sea for a long time now. Getting a little crowded along my section of beach...
Would likely find a niche anywhere in the 'Verse but sure would like to do some cruising around.
Should probably be crew on a ship but get leave to visit my family on a Whitefall-ish world where the terrain is familiar and the people are fairly far apart.
Independent as a hog on ice, as they say...

it's greener and there are cattle and vineyards.

Those guys can be problematic. A poor winner

are all manner of cool anniversaries celebrated

Belly dancers get double pay for showing up on
