Serenity Sequel Squashed
Whedon says it ain't gonna happen.
by Paul Davidson
October 5, 2006 - In spite of a groundswell of grassroots support amongst its fans, Serenity has failed to revive the science fiction-western Firefly franchise. Even with DVD sales, the movie reportedly failed to recoup its $40 million budget. And as anyone who's seen the film knows, the exit of certain characters and the resolution of key storylines makes it difficult — or impossible — to recapture the chemistry of the excellent-but-short-lived series.

Joss Whedon himself, creator of both the TV show and the movie, broke the news to the Whedonesque.com website. He says, "There's no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or some such and I'm not even sure how anyone thought there was talk there."

"I've seen [Firefly actors] Nathan and Tim (and Summer and Alan) recently because they're my friends because I'm so, yeah, awesome. So let's put that to bed and smother it with a pillow."

And so it ends for Firefly. The Browncoats have fought, and Serenity flown, for the last time.

I found this online - wondering how true it is - site below

Honestly I don't know for 100%. I think he (Joss Whedon) would have made a more public and ringing statement and besides I think he's said that people are putting words in his mouth on this particular subject.

_____

"You know that's gonna fall off."

How are ships unlike food?
1. If you try it and don't like it, you don't have to do it again.
2. You can have as much as you want, when you want.
3. Cravings can be very specific.
I mean, hello it's not as if there's 'ship police?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

How many times is this going to be posted? Joss has stated that he was misquoted. All he was saying was that there is currently nothing in the works, not that there never will be. But a studio will have to express the interest, Joss can't afford to do it on his own.

It takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round. Unfortunately, some are pedaling in the wrong direction...

Hey, don't sweat it, buddy. Information is posted, and passed on this site so quickly, it would be really easy to miss it the first, second, or even third time around.

As ECGordon stated, Joss was making it clear that no sequal was currently in the works. I think us Browncoats are so eager (that being a phenomenal understatement) for any kind of continuation, that some of us will believe any little blurb we see on any little site we visit.

Anyway, don't be offended by some of the negative feedback you're bound to get. We're all pretty hurt that the execs at the top of their proverbial ivory towers can't appreciate the beauty that is Firefly.

"I'm thinkin' we'll rise again."

The rumour Joss was trying to squash was that he was secretly working on the Serenity sequel. When his quote got misinterpreted as NEVER, he stated that there was nothing in the works NOW--"Not never, just now."

something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. There is no news. Not never, just now.

Here is the post that started the rumor that Joss was secretly working on a Serenity Sequel.

and Joss's response to the idea that he was meeting with all the actors and secretly filming the sequel:

Again he wanted to squash the rumour that he was secretly working on the sequel.
