I'm calling on all writerly Browncoats who are dedicated to turning out professional quality Firefly fanfic to start up an online writers group.

Let's keep an eye on the time when our local Borders or other book emporium will have Firefly novels crowding out the Star Trek and Star Wars novels in the SF & F section. Many of us who posted on the "Fanfic Writers, Why Do You Write?" thread of not so long ago have expressed the desire to become published authors or are already involved in other serious projects (like Virtual Firefy). Let's give each other a push from time to time -- and help develop new, like-minded folk to join in the effort.

I propose we start up a series of threads on serious writerly concerns as a first step. We can talk about possible topics soon but...

...first things first: Let's pick a name for our group so we can identify these threads easily. A little while ago in "Writers of FanFic, why do you write?", there were several suggestions for possible names so I'll list them here to start things off. Let's get some more before we decide. Here's what we've got so far:

Rim Writers
'Verse Writers
Scribblers on the Rim
Marginal Folk
Marginal Browncoats

Do ya think "Big Damn Writers" would be too egotistical? Hey, it'd be something to live up to!

If I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream big.

wow! that sounds really exciting! i'd *love* to be involved.

i'm part of an online writers group consisting of friends i made on a writing course and it really is a good way to maintain motivation. one of these friends has pubished a book since i last saw them! made me consider my fanfics and comic script pretty poor fare!

not sure about a name =) they all sound shiny!

Personally, I like "Big Damned Scribblers" (uniquely Firefly, hopefully a little lighthearted, and I can hear Mal calling writers "scribblers").

Speaking as the head writer of the Virtual Firefly series over at www.stillflying.net, I'd be interested to see how this shapes up (and some of our staff probably would be, too).

If we can perhaps provide a home (as a sub-section of our forum), let me know!

Game on!

For obvious reasons, I'm partial to "VerseWriters" as a group name. I think we could start up writing workshops - p'raps start off with character-specific ones, or maybe plot-bunny threads in case somebody comes up with a plot bunny and can't think how to bring it to fruition. Or, best of all, how about writing challenges? For instance, I suggested a sex-free writing challenge in another thread a while back...

Gwek, did you have a fanfic archive or somesuch in mind? 'Twould be mighty shiny of you to start such a home on sf.net. (Gah, I gotta get caught up over there soon.)

GWEK, thanks for the idea. Let's see what shakes loose here first. I was thinking about starting my own bulletin board site (not that I have any idea how! yet) but flying on your great virtual verse would be, well you know...shiny!

I like the name suggestion, too.

P.S. to Steamer: Can't think of why you'd have that preference for "Verse Writers"...

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

I'd be willing to help you all out if you need betas or something (I'll chip in on discussions, too, if nobody minds), although I'm probably one of the least serious writers here (I'm keeping it a hobby so that it stays fun for me).

And, when you do figure out a name, shiney!

Don't worry - I haven't shared anything yet, either (stupid already-being-stuck-towards-the-beginning-of-the-story).

I bet if you do, though, that it will be liked by someone (on account of there being a whole lot of someones here). Just a thought.

I like the idea in priciple, but I'm way too paranoid to share my ideas until I post them.

But I'm all up for thrashing out character motivations and backgrounds. Just so long as it remains true to the Jossverse. And I'm up to my elbows in plot bunnies - anyone wants a few, they're welcome. Droppings are smallish...

Just FYI, there's a community over on LJ called "Big Damn Writers" where people are encouraged to ask questions, give support, etc. It's not very active, but there've been some good discussions there.

Define "true to the Jossverse." I do alot of speculative stuff. I'm not good at being funny, so my stuff tends to be dark, much darker than anything we saw in the Jossverse. I often ask, how could the independents win, what strategies would work, even the politics of Authoritarianism. I saw a story on here with a suicide bomber, and that is an element in one of my stories. I steer clear of the main/known characters of the Jossverse, I even created my own ship called "The Menelaus" a pirate ship with a very naughty agenda. I maintain all the rules of Jossverse, and try not to alter the history but I still go to very dark and gray areas and eeck out my own storylines. Am I a bad person? *shrugs*

I think I will start posting my stories and see what people actually think... but I am so nervous about rejection. My fragile ego is made up of water lillies and cotton candy. And I cry, cry like a big damned baby... when the San Antonio Spurs lose games, or when someone else has the last piece of cheesecake, or when I watch the care bears. Big manly tears, the size of grapefruits and made of acid. Which makes me cry more because it burns my eyes. But I don't wail. I just kind of sob, with a manly grunt, all warrior like. But mostly I don't cry, unless I'm shot in the nuts... I have an icebox where my nuts used to be. So I pretty much don't cry that much anymore. Oh god, I'm tearing up now... I have to go.

I like the sound of this, and I vote "Big Damn Scribblers" as the name. It's great!

I'd love to be involved, but I'd produce very little for at least the next while. My free time is pretty limited and my 'net time is even less. Is it still okay for me to be involved? I'm already working on a post BDM episode script fic! Honest!

I vote for Big Damn Scribblers. Don't know how much I'd be involved though - I'm pretty much trapped in an ivory tower for the duration right now. Got a plot bunny that's turned into a herd of plot woolly mammoths. It's ugly. Real ugly.

But I like the idea! I'll certainly learn by lurking!

Edited to add: what kind of things would this involve? I've never been in a writer's group. Never been a writer before LOL!

Well, I don't know 'bout this one, but I wrote a virtual season of Buffy with an online group once. That was LOTS of fun. I'm the first to admit it was pretty terrible, but it was great fun!

The way we did that one was that everyone involved got to write one episode. The writers of the two episodes voted best were then picked to write the season finale. I was one of the winners *beams with pride* Like I said, lots of fun!

I'm guessing this would be different, unless we organise a virtual season of Firefly or something. I know a few places are doing that kind of thing, though I don't get to read them very much, never mind join in!

I like Big Damned Scribblers.
..I'm not sure you'd consider my fic to be exactly professional quality. I've never taken a writing course since freshman composition in college.

I'd be happy to play the "what if" game and beta. There's a lot going on in life right now that needs tending to, so I'm stalled in my writing efforts. I'm trying to figure out where to go next, or rather how to get where I want to go. It will come. Eventually. Probably?
Definitely fall under the enthusiastic amateur/spare time writer category, though.

I know the feeling! I usually get to write on the weekends for a few hours -- if I'm lucky. All the more reason for starting this online forum for writers. The threads can be a place to thrash out writers block, get feedback on ideas, find beta readers, have discussions on the brass tacks of writing in the FF 'Verse. AND encoruage each other to keep on writing.
