Unfortunately, it is much more about money than anything else. For me to fly down to Atlanta, stay 2 days (weekend), tix to D*C & assorted goodies, $ for liquid refreshment (and food, I guess)...we're easily at $900 + .
We just dug ourselves out of a mountain of debt (incurred during our separation in 2004)...by putting off things we need like a new A/C unit, a new furnace, etc etc.

Mav the 13 year old says : Screw that, put it on the credit card and go!
Mav the 39 year old says: Go to your room, 13 year old. We can't go.

It's really me that is saying I can't go rather than Husband. Deep in my heart...I know he's right. We simply can't afford it.

I've contemplated getting a second job...but I'm so exhausted after working all week, then going home to Larry & Curly (the Stooge Brothers as I like to call them)who are incapable of taking care of themselves...

There is a (faint) glimmer of hope. My uncle's estate may end probate in July. If that happens, I may get a small amount of money. I have no idea how much, and I have no idea when. I guess its better to pin my hopes on that rather than giving up totally.

Tina, I am convinced ebay is an elaborate scam.

Sorry. Came over all springy...

I'm still catching up on the thread, but on the subject of not holidaying with your spouse - my Dad's parent's have been married for more than 50 years, and almost never holiday together. She goes on a sun holiday with her sisters and daughters every year, he stays at home and potters around the garden to his heart's content. Heck, it may even be *why* they've been married for more than 50 years!

Hi Tinadoll, I'm Rugbug. Nice to meet ya!

I'm not a big e-bay'er, but the trick is 1)don't bid until the last minute 2) have a fast connection, and 3)use a sniper 4)use buy it now if you REALLY want it (and it's an option).

I got bought my saddle off of ebay. Won it in the last minute, turns out from someone I know on another board. She was bummed, but what can I say...$350 for a $1000 saddle just couldn't be passed up.

I HATE it when people bid things up days before auction end. It's pointless and only costs everyone money.

I don't see why not. I know a couple of different married couples who have do a separate vacation every year. It's much healthier for the relationship for allowing a spouse/SO to go on a trip if you don't want to go 'cause either if they don't go, there'd be underlying resentment and if you go along and wish you hadn't, you'll have the underlying resentment.

*hugs* to Mavs. Sorry you can't go to D*C. I understand how you feel as I can't go either for the very same reasons.

ebay...yeah, I've been snipered several times. I think I've only won one auction and it shocked the heck out of me to get up and find out I'd gotten it. Usually I just do the 'buy it now' thing.

edit Tina...a sniper is someone who waits for the last minute and overbids the last bidder by a small margin.

HELL'S KITTEN

*HK heart eBay!* ^^

I find the coolest things on eBay... and rarely get outbid (cuz I'm a fool, by the way, not for any other reason).

A "sniper" is harmless if you actually bid your absolute highest bid right off the bat. If they are willing to pay more for something than you are, it really doesn't matter if they outbid you with days left or seconds left in the auction. *never understood people's complaints about "snipers"*

But, ANYway! The Serenity movie magazine can be found lots of places, just keep lookin' and don't fret. ^^

Well...

Select to view spoiler:

Maggie was a sociopath of another sort from the perp. Both were prime examples of 'mememe, it's all about me, and I'm the only one with any "real" feelings.' While the perp has a liking for murder, Maggie just wants to steal everything that's not nailed down, including Roarke. I was so happy when Eve just punched her lights out. And I think Roarke deserved his punch, too. He spent quite a bit of time being criminally stupid.

And isn't it interesting that everytime Eve and Roarke have a major disagreement, Summerset sides with her?

And the best line: "I thought applause would be inappropriate."

Hope you had fun with the make-up. Sounds like quite a cast of characters.

People have a heart line, a life line, etc on their palms. I also have a bagel line.

Come, join the non D*C'ers, Odds!

Glad I won't be the only one whining at my screen come D*C weekend. RMMC, you & I will have a "We're not at D*C thread. Deal?

I'll join that thread ^^

In other news: After getting so precious about my kitchen knives for so long, refusing to let other people use them, throwing a hissy fit if someone does, and leaves them in the sink (you'll loose your fingers doing that, I tell them) what came next was perhaps inevitable.

Yes I'm typing one-handed. (No I didn't remove it at the wrist, just opened my palm)

The irony is exquisite, and I felt obliged to share xD

But shouldn't really be a scalpel?

And it seems to me that someone mentioned a huge can't go to D*C bash on the site last year...Sounds like a good plan for the unfortunate among us. Of which I'm not one.

Hey Hobbleit, best of the best for that pesky dissertation.

That's why I eat donuts. Same general shape, less intense pain.

I know Bryce reads Tarot, I wonder if she does palms, too? Bagel slicing is the worst. I have heard so many horror stories. *shudders uncontrolably* It's like an industrial strength paper cut.

Speaking of Bryce, I didn't properly congratulate you on being a supermom! Way to go Dylan!!!

It was actually slicing open a roll, not a stitch job thankfully, but it does make it hard to keep cooking the bacon and making your tea while you're trying to find a dressing and stick it on at the same time xD

I think the D.C.-Free thread is going to have to be one hell of a bash, It's already got the shiniest people (nyer =P ) and we will have a MUCH better time then they will! Won't we? Right?

Morning all! Will catch up with the rest of the thread momentarily, but did want to comment on this:

Ah, no. Snipers are much more advanced than just that. There are sniper sites you can use on the web that watch your items and bid in the last few minutes, upping your bid each time someone else counters. You could be out drinking with the boys and your sniper is watching your e-bay back. E-bay has a similar option, but it ups your bid EVERY time someone else bids until it reaches your max.

I don't think people that outbid you in the last minute are snipers...I just think they are smart.

Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch. I'm not a big fan of knives, although sharp kitchen knives sound like a dream. My own are so dull they could barely slice through...um...well, something that's really easy to slice through. I'm even less of fan of being cut. And you continued cooking?

I am...and here's where the morbid and creepifying part comes in...a fan of anatomy. Was it a good cut? Getting to tack on any descriptors like: "to the bone?" is a bonus. But hopefully not a very painful bonus. *wishes Odds little pain...and a cool scar, 'cause what is getting cut worth if not a pretty scar that will illicit stories for years to come*

(little side story on my slightly twisted sense of humor: One of the reasons the doctors decided to not do surgery on my arm was that it would leave a scar from arm pit to elbow...and being a girl, this would supposedly bother me. Heh. I thought it would be cool. I told them if they cut it kind of jagged-y, I would just tell people I got attacked by a shark. Now that would be a cool scar story. )

Mavs and the other non-D*C-ers: I'll be joining you all at the REAL party. (besides, even if I went, I'd be all shy and awkward and blah. I kind of clam up at things like that.)

Ohhh my hands would be in pieces if I used blunt knives, don't pay enough attention to avoid the inevitable mis-cuts and slides. It's one of the little deep cuts, couple of inches long, across the ball of my hand (so it keeps re-opening every time it knits >.<)

But as for scar stories, those I have no shortage of xD Think my favorite is the tiny scar on my right hand, just where the thumb meets the palm. Was helping my dad put one of our air-rifle's back together after cleaning, there was a spring, there was a screwdriver, there was a slip, and then there was a screwdriver running from side to side through my hand, twin trails of grease visible under the skin. And now it's just this absolutely tiny scar, I mean people don't even notice it unless I point it out, repeatedly, sometime with a telescope

The shark story would be cool though, but, one on my lip let's me use the Little Nicky quote (never seen the movie, but had it quoted at me a lot) "I used to be good looking 'til I was hit in the face with a shovel."

speaking of scars, my dad had his work physical the other day and the person doing it said he had the most scars on his hand they'd ever seen.

Plus the missing part of his finger.

Eek!

What does he do?

No great scar stories for me. Got scars, just no stories. All of them involved stupidity, however. Does anyone have scars that you don't remember how you got?
