This is where I got mine:

http://www.alamoleathers.com/genoldwestra.html

I got mine in the walnut (dark brown) color. It is very close to Mal's.

Another good place to look is Half moon leathers.
Just do a websearch on Half moon leathers and you should get their website first shot.
They do great work.
They do custom work.
They do leather and wool.
I am betting they can turn out alot of browncoats, And maybe a few companion outfits besides.

IMHO, his coat looked a lot more like a 3/4-length brown wool coat, not leather. That could just be me, though...

It's definitely leather... looks like the suede side is out, because if you look at the cuffs at the arms, they're a shinier leather on the inside of the cuff.

The real trick is those two clasps at the front. I can't seem to find them anywhere. It actually looks more like a 'pirate' type coat than a western one, considering the clasps and the way the sleeves are cuffed.

I have not been able to find the clasps either. I have looked at dozens of different types online, but have found nothing close yet.

Ok, I did the intelligent thing for a change and looked at Mal's picture on the DVD case...

Yep, looks like suede to me too. That coat would totally kick ass to own for yourself

This isn't exactly Mal's coat, but it's pretty close, and for around $150:

Does anyone know what the legality would be of having someone set up to product Mal's ACTUAL coat, and sell it? Who would have the copyright on that, Mutant Enemy or the Hated Fox Network?

I too kinda wish I had Mal's coat. I mean, I do have a brown coat, and I'm quite fond of it, but it's not quite as shiny as Mal's.

Then again, I probably couldn't pull off wearing that coat without looking dumb.

And anyway, first thing's first, I need to get me a Blue Sun t-shirt when I get some extra cash. :)

Well, my coat came via FedEx a week ago. I ordered this one:

http://www.adamleathers.com/genoldwestra.html

In the walnut colour. I gotta say, the colours are BANG ON! The material isnt what I excepted... more like a jeans-type, with the cuffs being courdurouy. But I love it :) I'm getting it altered soon so that its around the dimensions of mal's coat.

That is the one that I bought. The color is close enough to not really concern oneself over. The length is a about 6-8 inches longer than Mal's coat, but you can always have it altered which is what I plan to do. The material is canvas (which is historically accurate for the period) but it is durable. I am very happy w/ mine.

If someone ever did produce one exactly like Mal's I would buy it.

I keep looking at this coat, but I just can't make myself like it. It just doesn't look enough like Mal's coat to me.

Probably one of the reasons I don't like this particular coat. I definitely want to find one that has the same texture and look to it. I've got to put my shiny new patches somewhere!!

I am so with you on that one!! I would have to have it altered too since I'm a on the short side. Had the same problem when I went in search of Spike's duster and had to settle for a short leather coat. But oh well, I'm not gonna settle on this one. Gotta have the suede/leather look and wonderful brown color.

Same boat here. Fortunately the "short" billowy coat hangs just past my knees. I've had someone tell me I look like Angel though, so if a plan's gonna backfire, at least it's going in the right direction.

HELL'S KITTEN

I got bored and threw this together real quick. I still need to finish them hem & collar and fabricate better clasps, but here it is anyway. I put a photo of Mal in his coat next to it for comparison. My crappy camera didn't quite pick up all the detail, but I think you get the general idea. If you see something that's not quite right, please let me know... I'd like to get this as right as possible.

SHINY!!!

It looks pretty good to me, although I do agree with the clasps, they really stand out. Perhaps a more burnished gold finish would blend in better.

Did you make the coat?? I'm so jealous. I've been looking all over the internet and can't find anything that even comes close to what I want.

The jacket Adam Baldwin wears during his rendition of "The Hero of Canton" on the DVD seems to be made of the same material as (or one very similar to) Mal's coat.

Some suggest suede would work; others say that's too heavy and calfskin would be better.

In this case I couldn't say, cos I've not seen the real thing.

Wow it looks so good! A couple suggestions, like the poster above said, the clasps really stand out, maybe take some sandpaper to them...and the cuffs look black, while Mal's in the picture look light brown...

That's it though, good job, it looks SHINY!

No ruttin' way! That is one shiny looking coat Hell's Kitten. Did you make it? You have to tell us how you did it or where you got the materials. You are sitting on a gold mine! If that jacket could be reproduced dozens if not hundreds of Browncoats from all the boards would happily part w/ money for one of their own.

Well, from what I have been able to glean from stepping through Serenity (White Fall scenes), Trash (opening scenes), and the Train Job (opening scenes), there's this to say about the construction:
The coat very much appears to be sueded leather. It has the weight of leather and seems to have the hand as well. Except for the cuffs, it appears to be sueded on both sides; so it is likely a split (a single cowhide is often split into two pieces by shearing the outside hide from the inside hide. The inside hide "half" will always be sueded or rough on both sides. This provides a rough hewn, frontier look to this particular garment.) The back is very clearly made up of a yoke above and a mid-back piece below. The sleeves join not at the side seam but about 1/4 - 1/3 of the way up the back of the armhole; this seam is either meant to abut the bottom seam of the yoke or very nearly so. The sleeve looks to my moderately practiced eye like the style you get in men's suits only not quite as fitted. I think that there are two narrow side/back panels that have a slight hour glass shape to them giving the coat a bit of flare at the bottom, a very mild waist effect and providing a smidge more ease across the shoulders; these panels appear to attach to the front pieces in a standard side seam at the underarm. But I may be mistaken on this last point because on White Fall you can clearly see from the inside how the side slits are faced and there doesn't appear to be any seam going up from the top of the slits. The collar appears to be about 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide and the front pieces appear to overlap by about the same amount producing a notched lapel look. I haven't yet decide on the depth of the cuffs or the width and shaping of the sleeves although the sleeve is definitely not as fitted as a standard suit sleeve.

I managed to pick up a lovely cow's worth of brown leather for under $100. It's not double sueded but has a great distressed bomber jacket finish and some strategically placed holes that will incorporate nicely as shot damage. I'm looking forward to running up a browncoat for an air support gunner for my husband. I figure the different units not to mention service branches would have different interpretations of what a browncoat should look like.

there is a company that makes knockoff of holywood costumes that is offering a 'Browncoat' coat...

http://www.abbyshot.com/

... but they want $450 buck for it.

I went with Internatinal Male's 'Westgate Suede Trench II'

http://tinyurl.com/cg2a2

It's only $140 bucks and looks pretty good. and, the way I figure it... a rag-tag unit like the Browncoats -- they ain't got no tailor that's gonna go make sure all their coats are the same-like.

P.S. IM's 'London Opera Vest' would make a darn good Simon vest too...

Hmmm... I'm torn between saving my money for the Abbyshot and the Westgate. The Abby looks so much cooler, so much more real, but I'm not sure I can part with $450 for a piece of my Halloween Costume. I live in AZ. A trenchcoat doesn't get a lot of use out here.
