From Variety...

Fox has impounded "Drive," steering the show off the network highway after four episodes.
Despite decent reviews, "Drive" quickly stalled, averaging just a 2.3 rating and 6 share among adults 18-49, and 5.6 million viewers overall.

Monday night's "Drive" didn't help matters, coming in fifth place for the hour (1.5/5) and driving "24" to record lows, dropping Fox to fourth for the night.

Having shoved a Denver boot on "Drive," Fox has now gassed up "House" repeats in the Monday 8 p.m. slot.

Net is still mulling whether to burn off the last two remaining segs of "Drive" on air, or stream the final segs online.

Fox revved up six segs of "Drive," which revolved around a group of people forced to take part in an illegal cross-country race. Nathan Fillion stars, along with Melanie Lynskey, Dylan Baker, Emma Stone, Kevin Alejandro, J.D. Pardo, Taryn Manning, Rochelle Aytes, Michael Hyatt, Mircea Monroe, Riley Smith, Kristin Lehman and Charles Martin Smith.

Tim Minear and Ben Queen created and exec produce "Drive," which comes from 20th Century Fox TV. Greg Yaitanes also exec produced.

So what now? Do we start the writing and protesting campaigns, or do we just mope in a corner somewhere? I hate to sound pessimistic, but it's at the point where there's almost no point in watching new shows. How many good TV shows have to get cancelled before people stop watching network TV completely? Or is the general public so unassertive that it will just continue like this for eternity?

*sigh*

Sorry fo the rant...

Which would be part of the reason it got axed.

(Not blaming you persoanlly, but a show won't last when folks don't watch it)

I know it's real popular to blame Fox for everything around here, but when a new show is actually bringing down the ratings of one of their best-rated shows, it's a good business dicision to axe it.

VERY sad news, but not suprising that it happened.

On an unrelated note, I thought this article from USA Today was interesting. Discusses theories on why TV ratings are so low recently.

Typical of FOX. Still can't grasp the idea of letting a show hang around awhile to see if an audience will build before yanking it.

Sorry, but as long as I can afford to have cable, I will be supporting the BDH's (I include the Buffy/Angel casts/producers/writers in this, too) no matter what network they find work on. They are more important to me than the network.

That said, I will boycott FOX except when it comes to them. I may not like every show they do (except Joss's--which I'm guaranteed to love), but I'll give them all a shot.

I was already NOT watching F*x but not because of a boycott. They just show the crappiest programs ever invented.
My husband still watches Bones, because he loves Boreanaz. But as a whole, F*x doesn't get our viewership.
This was the first time I've watched their network in a very long time. Not anymore. Again, not because of a boycott but because there's nothing showing worth watching.

Especially low-rated shows that are driving (hehe) down ratings for their high rated shows.

I don't know what they were thinking there. Shouldn't the new show come after the high rated show and hope the audience stick around to check it out?

But how can they justify canceling a new show before giving it a chance to thrive.

And if it was driving (hehe) down ratings for the other show, they could have just moved it to a different night, they didn't even try that!!

And I don't see how Drive was pulling down the ratings for that other show, if you like that show you're not gonna stop watching it because of something that comes on before it.

It's all just one big conspiracy to prove that F*X HATES US!!!!

Well, for one, it's really hard (and unlikely) for new viewers to get into a serialized show like Drive. Jumping in several episodes in without the backstory makes the show hard to understand.

And the reason it brough 24's ratings down are because people turned the channel durring Drive, and basically forgot to turn back for 24. It's why networks are so big on lead-in numbers, and the viewers retained.

Joss and Tim really need to find a different outlet for their brand of storytelling. Broadcast television (at least as it currently exists) really isn't well suited to what they have to offer. It's not really well suited to anything worth a shit, but that's another discussion.

I don't understand why everyone blames Fox. Cancellations are not the fault of the networks. Fox promoted this show to death! If people don't watch the show, there is no way it can stay on the air. The Big 4 networks would be out of their mind to keep a show with only 4-6 million viewers (and dropping each episode).

Networks air what the majority of the American TV audience wants to see. Can you blame them?

And boycotting a network is just plain stupid. Your efforts will barely be seen as a blip on the radar. Besides, you are depriving future good shows of their own deserved ratings, and promoting further cancellations!

If you want a show to succeed, tell people about it. Spread the word. If it gets cancelled, know that it was the fault of the American audience, not Fox or any other network.

24's ratings are down because the show has started to suck. I've watched and loved it every season, but it has run out of gas (pun) this time around. Best news in this regard is they have Sutherland on contract for 3 more seasons and this show will tank next year. Lack of imagination is hallmark of FOX. I say we list the sponsors for Firefly, 24, Drive and House and we boycott them all. Let's run FOX out of town like Imus was run out of town.

And therein lies the most important problem of all. The majority of Americans have been watching Dancing with the Stars and Deal or No Deal. They've not been watching Drive. We love it, we love stories, most of the buying public out there doesn't. Or that would be what was popular. Until the public at large quits watching that mindless drivel, it'll be tops.

Makes sense, but I think you can blame Fox as well, though no more than any of the other networks. The science of marketing art is abysmal and really has only figured out how to pander to titillation and stupidity. The networks are also shortsighted and fail to foster enough judgment in their ranks to know which shows merit some patience and which don't.

What I don't get is why folks keep falling for it.

I agree. I know it's easy to say screw Fox and be angry with them, but to be more honest you should be angry with all the folks you know in ordinary walks of life who don't ever watch this stuff we love. They would rather watch crap reality shows.
That's what sells.

It's a fact. Crap is king right now. Until it's no longer popular, the good stuff will be few and far between. I'm going to watch the gems, no matter what network they're on. The rest of the time, my tv is off.

ok, i GET canceling shows with low numbers, but after airing only 4 episodes?? 2 of which were back to back, and the 3rd was the next night???
i know that they did air 4 eps, but in the course of 2 WEEKS. this would essentially be tantamout to cancelling a show after 2 episodes( Wonderfalls, tim minear, FOX) Drive started on a sunday, then switched to a monday( i know during the premiere eps they said that it would continue the next night in it's normal time slot, but it's possible folks could have missed that.) people could have been tuning in on sunday night to see it not realizing it was a monday show.
you HAVE to give shows a chance to develop SOME following!

and movies are just as bad! if it doesn't break the bank on opening weekend, then it's done. movies can be gone from theaters before folks that wanted to see them are even aware they are IN theaters already!
i'm THIS close to telling hollywood where to stick it! (not that it would do any good)

It's pretty rare that a serialized show gains significant ground in the ratings. If anything, they will keep going down. If a show starts off that low in the ratings and keeps losing a large amount of viewers each episode, there really is no point in giving the show anymore airtime.

Some could argue that you could move the show after American Idol or another successful lead-in, but this doesn't work as well with serialized shows. It's not the type of thing people are willing to jump into without seeing the previous episodes. This is the advantage to shows like CSI or reality shows.

I do understand your pain, though. Networks are swinging the axe of cancellation quicker and quicker these days.

For those who insist that people are only watching reality TV, I would point out that of the top 20 shows (week of 4/11), only 5 are reality shows (and Idol and Dancing are counbted twice each, so it's only 3 shows).

12 of the top 20 are hour-long dramas.

People still like stories. It's just that this one didn't catch on.

I was about to ask "what was that, two episodes?!", but then saw what happened explained.

I do not have cable TV because despite a few educational channels and cartoon networks there really isn't anything out there I would want to watch (except things which have been canceled now.)
This really blows for exposure for Nathan, Tim, et al. Hopefully everyone got paid for the work they did and nobody gets royally pooched.

Well, as far as syndication goes, probably becuase the first-run syndication market dried up years ago. All there is now is re-runs of scifi channel shows.

MISSTRESSAHARA

Already? Wow, with all the hype fux had made for Drive I thought they'd give it at least a season, half tops. And blaming Drive for low ratings on 24 is a rather sorry excuse. I hear 24 has gotten less stellar recently, and well Heroes was on opposite. To say Drive was the reason for low 24 ratings and not having to go against a powerhouse like Heroes makes me think fux doesn't want to admit they're network is slowly bleeding to death. *sigh* Why do Tim and Nathan keep working for them? Contracts. I understand they have standing contracts to work for fux if a show is available and they're asked. Sucks I know.

I feel so sorry for Nate and Tim. Seems none of our BDH's can catch a break. Now I admit to being one of the few who didn't watch it, but damn cancelling so soon, it's just.... it's insanity.

Yes I agree Tim and Joss and company need to get away from the networks, they'll never be able to tell the intellegent stories they want, the only place I can see them working freely is cable. Dead Like Me, Weeds, even The Soprano's all aired on cable and got a heavy following. Maybe for some stories there wouldn't be the kind of budget they're used to, but at least they'd have their chance to write their witty dialogue and not have the threat of cancellation looming over their heads all the time.

This really does suck, and if it weren't for Heroes, and the upcoming season of Eureka, the only tv I'd be watching is cooking shows. Sorry to all the fans for this lousy news.
