TWITCH

I just read the thread about Drive being canceled. That's lousy. I wasn't in a position to watch Firefly when it was actually on the air, and only came to it after Serenity was released. (See? Fan communities really DO matter. I never would've found Firefly if they didn't!) I was excited to be seeing one of Tim Minear's creations from the very beginning. It's sad to see it share the same fate as Firefly.

I've been re-reading some of the interviews with Joss Whedon as a result of all this, and can understand his reluctance to put his energies behind a project that can be yanked out from under him before he really gets going. This is a paraphrase since I don't have the interview in front of me, but he said words to the effect of not wanting to be in the business of writing stories that no one would see.

Joss, Tim, Jose, I hear ya. I'm trying to learn the craft myself, and the whole process of going from a well-written work (something I have not and may not ever achieve) to a published work, be it in film, on screen, in a novel, a graphic novel, or even a cereal box, seems incredibly daunting. The odds are obviously pretty hellish, even for folks like Joss and Tim, who have some serious success stories under their belts. And to publish in a medium where someone can decide to yank your publication before you even finish writing it?

And yet the odds aren't impossible. I finally got my first magazine article published. The draft sat at the publisher's for two years. I never thought to see it again. Go figure. It's not art, but it's a beginning.

I feel kinda like a dust bunny preaching to the owners of the house, but I hope the setbacks that my RBDH's have had lately don't make them lose faith in themselves. To everyone who helped bring the Firefly 'verse into being: Please do keep flying. And writing. And publishing. Please don't stop telling those stories. Because we listen. We see. We read. And we really can't wait to see what's next.

CYBERSNARK

Hell no, the odds aren't impossible. If they were, there plain wouldn't be an entertainment industry.

Even the Big Names (Lucas, Spielberg, Cameron, et all) started out as nobodies.
