As wrong as it may be, he is entitled to his opinion.

Was it just me, or did it sound like he was Joss-bashing.

It sounds to me like he made up his mind before he even watched the movie.

REDLAVA

I can pretty much tell that guy has bad taste in movies in general. About halfway through he references the movie Sahara and basically said he gave it a good rating. Anybody who has read Clive Cussler's book in which the movie was based on they would think the movie was total rubbish.

So in my opinion they guy pretty much let his dislike of Joss to reflect in his review of Serenity. Yes, Serenity has movie cliches in it, but so does every movie ever made. Of course it is going to have similarities to Star Wars, because almost every Sci-Fi movie ever made before and since then uses many of the same formulas.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. And my opinion is way different.

If all our community does is goes around and mocks others for not believing that FF/S is the best thing since sliced bread then how does that make us look? I wasn't mocking him, I was just saying the guy pretty much says in his review that he dosen't like Joss Whedon or anything Joss Whedon does.

He goes on a personal tirade attacking Joss.

If you're going to be a film critic, you're supposed to be bipartisan, judging a film solely on it's merit, not who made it.

Um, what reviews are you reading? B/c in all my years, I've been... hard pressed to find a review that is based 'solely on it's merit'. In fact, the /only/ ones that come to mind were Siskel and Ebert. And if you've watched Ebert and Roper, you'd see that Roper is the exact opposite of what a movie critic /should/ be; he effectively ruins the show. And his kind is the most prolific in that "industry".

I meant that's what a film critic should be.

But sadly that's not the reality, it's usually the studios that pay the most whose films get the good reviews.

But there are still a few good critics left like Roger Ebert, hopefully the rest can learn from him.

I've been around this board for a while, and when I'd stumbled across that site, I was shocked by the sheer magnitude of the author's bile-spewing, so I came here to show my comrades.

Well, if people here went over and started mocking him/her b/c of your post here, then you would have been mostly responsible for that action. And since such an action would have been damaging to this community, you would be mostly to blame for that. This is called taking responsibility for ones actions. Luckily though, people did _not_ take action.

Regarding your comment that this community does not necessarily have the best reputation. Well, assuming that's true, that's hardly justification for worsening it now is it. If we are going to shake such opinions about us, we must be rather careful regarding how we interact with people outside this community. And mocking people's negative reviews of the movie is hardly the way to do this. Which, btw, is exactly what you proposed in your now deleted post.

Also, what does ballot-stuffing have anything to do with what we're doing here? What does attacking other posters on this board on random issues have to do with what we're talking about? Do you honestly think that it strengthens your position?

I honestly hope that you're sincere in your post (can't tell in this medium).

To get some context on that blog, it was shortly after the movie and very shortly after the BDM DVD was released. People got... aggressive in there discussions about the BDM. It was quite ridiculous. Though it is still valid from time to time; such things tend to be cyclic.

Btw, I (among *many* others) define a Browncoat as one who loves FF, but also one who goes by the phrase:

When you can't run, you crawl. And when you can't crawl, when you can't do that, you find someone to carry you.

Browncoats are people that carry... sometimes each-other.

I know that sounds corny. But, it serves well in life and has given this community a nice sense of well, community. Something which I haven't found anywhere else. It's where I believe we get our strength and resolve from. And it would really suck if that gets lost b/c we used this for the forces of evil instead of the forces of good.

At any rate, I'm stepping off my soap-box now.

Yes, an overly defensive viewpoint doesn't do any fandom any favours. It just gives posters in other forums ideal material to take out of context and mock us for. It also promotes the idea that we're an elitist and snobbish group that aren't in touch with reality, something which I'm pretty sure we're not. And there are always going to be dissenting views.

If I had a euro for every time someone mocked Buffy the Vampire Slayer I'd be rich enough to retire and write fanfic for the rest of my life. Heck, if I had a euro for everyone on this board who mocked it I'd still have enough to buy myself a wii! I think it's an excellent show, and that Joss is a brilliant writer, but I accept it's not everybody's cup of tea. Ditto Firefly and the BDM.

The worst thing we can do is go around radiating stuck up dissaproval with anyone who doesn't adore the show and assume that they're somehow defective. They're not. They just have different tastes in TV!

That being said, personal attacks on any writer who hasn't written something odious and despicable is pretty pathetic. Why bash Joss? Even if you don't like his work that doesn't make much sense. Bash the work if you hate it that much, but personal jibes? That's childish.
