Just wanted to say Hi. I am in grad school (For the third time) and amazingly enough, I crawled out of studying computers long enough to get hooked on Firefly.

Semi-serious question. Are there any fan organizations in the Northwest? Inquiring Minds want to know ;-)

Hey, welcome to the board Have a strawberry!

I'm Irish, so I can't speak for the Northwestern browncoats. Be surprised if there weren't more than a few here though.

What are you studying?

My focus is computer security. I do a bunch of stuff with modelling attacker and user actions in information systems. If anyone wants something to help them sleep, I have published some papers on it ;-)

Oh hey! I used to work in Information Security! Although my job was less modelling attacker and user information systems and more explaining to people over and over why having their password on a yellow sticky note under their keyboard wasn't actually safe.

Ain't it the truth. I have a freind who does forensic investigations consulting and she says that before you do anything, take pictures of the site because people write down passwords EVERYWHERE!

My goal with my work is to figure out how to measure systems security. This is difficult in a dynamic environment but I have a crazy idea. Again, my wife says I get three sentences on my work before I need to check and see if people are getting zoned ;-)

Welcome aboard. A good place to start looking for fellow Browncoats are the charity screenings in a couple of weeks (and newbies like us can see the BDM on the big screen for the first time). At quick glance, there are screenings in Portland and Seattle. If neither is close, you could make a shout out for a specific locale.

Also, check out the Community link at the top of this page. You may find invitations to local groups. For instance, somebody is trying to organize a shindig for the Seattle area to coincide with the screening.

Thanks for the information. I checked and the screening and Shindig in Seattle are ALMOST close enough for a road trip if not for the fact that my other big hobby, Civil War Reenacting, is having a big event on the same weekend so I will be at Port Gamble WA, shooting at or being shot at by Yankees. I suppose that's what I get for living in the hinterlands (i.e. Moscow, ID). I'll be thinking of y'all.

Welcome to the best little site on the Internet! Take some time and look around. There are lots of active members in the Northwest, I'm wayyyyy over on the other side of the country, tho..where a number of us will be marching in the Dragon*Con parade as a newly formed battalion of the Independent Army over Labor Day weekend. You're more than welcome to join up - show up - march and have fun!

I am in Moscow Idaho. A nice place to go to school and raise kids but definitely far from the core ;-) I'd consider making the trek to Seattle for the Shindig but, as I said, I will be being a Civil War Soldier that weekend in Port Gamble WA during the day at least. I wonder how it would go over over to show up in a Confederate Sergeant's uniform, complete with a days grime from the battle ;-)

Ahoy, startroop! You are #26901 to sign on
aboard our shiny ship and I can see you are
getting a proper greeting with the exception
of the strawberry.
Strawberry? Singular? No way. Plural is
the rule for greeting newcomers even if they
are begrimed and dressed as (ahem) defeated.
Dig into the big bowl here and wash 'em down
with deep draughts of the Milk, sir.

What could be finer than to have a computer
security maven from Moscow? Even if 'tis Idaho.

Rule #1: Always change the password when you
get the equipment.
Rule #2: Don't put the password on the equipment,
the wall, the table, the chair.....
(Mebbe have it tattooed on yourself, like the
man in Memento?)

I heard a computer forensics man testify at a
trial that he'd seen computers with so many
stickies-with-website-passwords plastered around their
screens that they looked like sunflowers.
But I blather on.
Enjoy our Serene site...
Share the Firefly love.

As an organizer for Seattle's CSTS, I can speak for all us Browncoats here that having you come in uniform would be awesome!! Besides, I lived in Atlanta for a spell and it'd make me feel at home.
Port Gamble ain't that far...just across the Kingston ferry, down I-5 and over the bridge to West Seattle. Piece of cake.
Otherwise, come party with us at the post-CSTS shindig north of Seattle in the Greenwood neighborhood and meet the crew.
Info: http://firefly.meetup.com/55/
or just email me and I'll send the particulars.

Welcome to our corner of the 'Verse! And watch out for that gorram Mason/Dixon line. It can be a mite troublesome.

Saturday evening, June 23rd from 7pm to 11pm - Post-CSTS shindig at the Wayward Coffeehouse on Greenwood Ave N. (north of Seattle)
Open mic starts around 9pm.

Here's some info from the site:

"...We will be screening Done the Impossible to start the evening and as folk meander in ... then we're going to try something a little different ... a Browncoat Open Mic ...

... while we're hoping to have some filk musicians as well, we're going to have a Firefly/Filk/Good Myth OPEN MIC ... have a Firefly/Sci-Fi/Joss/Wayward-related song, poem, short piece of fan fiction, or even a great story of running into our Captain at B3? ... then share it with those of us who will be your willing and comprehending audience!

7.30 pm = Done the Impossible
8.30 pm = musicians if we got 'em
9 pm (or 9.30 pm if there's music first) = Open Mic

Wayward Coffeehouse is a proud sponsor of the Seattle CSTS event and we look forward to sharing the evening with you..."

It would be super shiny if you could come!
