I've never seen Serenity on the big screen. I have incredible sound in my room that could easily rock a small theater, but I've only seen the BDM on screens no larger than 42 inches.

Were you a late comer to the browncoat community or just a lot of stuff going on when it was in theaters?

Heh, yeah, I know. Stylist, top of the line styling products, maybe a good perm, perhaps even extensions. So I for one will try to assume that smirk more often, just as I often read JQ's posts as being followed by a 'ba-dom-chshhh'.

And I hope that you'll read my posts to you as friendly and interested, rather than judgmental or mean-spirited.

I don't *think* so, but I haven't actually asked them. One of my sisters is going to Germany next week, and the other is working insane hours, so they probably won't be going. Dad hasn't said, but he didn't plan on going last year and ended up getting a ticket from a friend at the last minute, so he may get to go again this year. CSTS totally snuck up on me this year -- how the hell did it get to be late June already?!

If that was you in the pic you posted earlier, your hair appears stick straight, like mine. People like you and I, despite perms and what not, do not have those pretty flowing curls unless you've just come from the hair dresser's, as voiced by Rugbug.
My stylist used to call that sort of hair a "done 'do."

I have long hair...and long hair is actually more work than shorter hair. I try to air dry my hair at least 2x a week, to reduce damage. The longer is is, the older it is, so the ends get brittle without constant upkeep. It can take 3 hours for my hair to air dry thoroughly, or up to 15 minutes with a hairdryer.
Products only work so so on long hair, as gravity is a cruel mistress and straight long hair is not meant to have that tousled look.

I worked nights when the show was on (if you can really call it on with the crappy programming) and had no clue what Serenity was when it came out. I am actually a self imposed fan. I ran into the show at Ballbuster and was hooked.

Thinking about prejudice, I was wondering about some of y'alls. I hate Science Fiction. After being disillusioned by Trek it has been a hard road in finding pieces of the genre I liked. I finally saw Logans Run all the way through two years ago and was mainly annoyed with the 70's styling and mentality. But it was still mildly intruiging. I also hate alot of romantic comedy and movies/shows drawn from romance novels. I was shown flicks based on the Janette Oke's books shown on the Hallmark Channel. Love Comes Softly is the only one I haven't seen. Very heart felt, set in the West, but includes some religious over tones. Not pushy on the religiosity, but it is obvious.

Lost my point. Yeah. Is there any recommendations for either genre that I might enjoy?

Naturally with my bass ackwardness I saw the last one (Loves Abiding Joy) first. Just had to see the last part first. I hate not knowing the rest of the story.

I really hate the preceptions with romance in all the various media. What really pisses me off is Sex In THe City. It pisses me off so much that I can't even come up with a coherent statement of my anger.

If it helps, I never put too much stock in shows (or books) like Sex In The City. While I'm sure that some women might lead lives like that, the majority of women I know certainly don't. Course, if they painted a realistic picture of most women's lives, no one would want to air it.

*Hugs* Yup, that was me. I don't often post pictures, but I have a hard time explaining what my hair looks like, even to a stylist, so I figured posting a picture might be the easiest way to illustrate. I've had long hair most of my life, and I've had tight spiral perms a couple of times, with varying results. I've really only cut my hair short twice, once after the first round of Alopecia Areata took most of my waist-length hair and new hair had started to grow in, and then again two years ago after dying my hair for 10 years. I like my short hair and I *really* like not dying my hair anymore, but I see those pretty tousled curls and get to wondering, heh. If I went just below shoulder length and got a looser perm, could it work? Probably not, but it's fun to look at pictures.

Hey, so was I! I started working overnights a week before the show premiered, and quit my job two weeks after the pilot was finally aired. In just shows and movies, or books as well? I love scifi books, but shows and movies are hit and miss for me. Definitely see Galaxy Quest if you haven't, though it's as much a comedy and a parody as it is a scifi movie. As far as romantic movies, I tend to shy away from anything too sappy, and anything too insipid. I also could not stand Sex in the City (I think I'm one of the only women my age who couldn't, heh), and actually have found some of the best romantic story lines in TV shows that aren't by nature romances (the first few seasons of Buffy, for example). As for movies, Casablanca is of course a classic, and I also love What Dreams May Come and Shadowlands. I also really enjoyed Love Actually and Down With Love, and I'm a life-long When Harry Met Sally fan.

I recently saw The Holiday with (Yuk) Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet and Eternal Happiness of the Spotless Mind (again with Kate Winslet. Strangely I enjoyed The Holiday. Hollywood tentacles reached in on this one but not too deep. Not to mention it had a supporting part for Eli Wallach which was too cool. Eternal was fantastic. I don't see why it didn't do better.

And your right DG. If realistic lives of women were portyayed few would watch it. But luckily I'm one of the few. There is nothing wrong with fantasy. But trying to make fantasy the standard is unhealthy. Just the same as porn, all this overtly romantic BS leaves people with unhappy and unfulfilled expectations. Hell, I feel alot of my romantic gestures in the past were a bit of a waste. Got nothing to show for it but less money and spent creativity.

See this is why I think we need facial expression typing or something...it's also why I never assume someone is saying something to irritate or upset. I just assume that it's their reality ( no matter how it mixes or doesn't mix with mine) Hey we all have our own world... it's the Wyatt/Annie discussion. We can take them out to see Mike's riding lawnmower and Wyatt will look at it and say " tractor" and Annie will respond " No...lawnmower" and Wyatt will smile and say " tractor" (this continues for upwards of 10 minutes sometimes) They each see the same thing, they just see it differently and each thinks their own interpretation is correct... and it doesn't really matter... the item will continue to exist as it always has and Wyatt will always see a tractor and Annie will always see a lawnmower...it's a good thing they don't let this get in the way of how much they like each other.

I can't believe I forgot Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! I love that movie. And I think their decision at the end is one of the most realisitcally romantic moments I've ever seen in a movie.

I just checked my very limited DVD collection, and I own French Kiss, Notting Hill, and While You Were Sleeping, all quite cute romantic comedies.

As far as scifi goes you can't go wrong with the matrix. Sadly I've seen way too many romantic comedies and might even own a few on dvd though I will neither confirm nor deny that.

Anyway I'm a kate beckinsale fan so I'd recommend Serendipity as a romantic comedy. It's definitely goofy at times and sappy at others, but overall one of the higher rated ones on my list. Even if the plot doesn't do it for you...it's got kate beckinsale!

Ok I must interrupt for the cute baby story ( complete with picture). It was Annie's birthday and we had a party for her which included a pinata. Well Annie got out her little bat and whacked as instructed only to be horrified when the pinata broke. She rushed out and pulled the halves together and cried " friend...friend" Seems she thought the pinata was a stuffed animal and she'd hurt it. She felt awful. We taped him back up and she recovered but still bandaids the pinata each morning and says sorry friend to it.

Heh...I read the Love Comes Softly, etc books when I was in Jr. High. Haven't seen the movies.

I'm a huge romantic movie sap, but I tend to favor the darker ones the most. A Life Less Ordinary is one of my favorites. Home Fries, Garden State, Elizabethtown, etc. I could go check my extensive collection, that has a list to go with, but you would all know what a huge freak I am, then.

I'm also a Kate Beckinsale fan. And a John Cusack fan...so Serendipity scores high marks.

CK, you mentioned a movie...just checked...Down with Love that is SOOOOO great. Totall cheesy but just wonderful. Doesn't hurt that Ewan McGregor is in it.

NVG: for Scifi series, check out The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. Now, you have to give it about 6 episodes before it starts taking hold, and the cheese factor is purposefully high, but I bet at the end you will want to be Brisco...and all the women will want to meet a man like Brisco...chin and all.

I had a "site unavailable" for a short while, but as you can see, that is no longer the case.

It is overcast here today too Mavs, and I love it. 72F and a bit breezy, really can't beat that (though I hope it stays here and doesn't follow me to the beach).

RUGBUG

Good morning....

It's overcast here in sunny CA as well. But this is typical June Gloom by the beach. People think beaches mean sun. Ha. I think it's a huge joke on all the tourists that come for a sunny beach vacation only to be met with cold, overcast nastiness. Ever heard of the marine layer? Well, now ya know about it.

It should burn off by noon. then we've been having some nice days.

Mavs: don't know if this is something that would work for you, but in my area, we have great luck with personnel agencies. Most of the good companies hire through them...it saves a lot of time and money for them on hiring and if the person doesn't work out, it's not a lot of effort to send them packing. 'Course this isn't true in regards to professional type positions (Lawyers, doctors, CPAs, engineers...the only types to really make money around here) but I can't remember if you fall into any of those categories. It's worth a shot...and could get you some temp work in the meantime, if that's necessary. (I got my current job thru a temp agency...been here almost 8 years...same with th previous three jobs...'course I suck at the whole job search thing).

Hi Rugbug,

I've submitted my resume to a few jobs through agencies. Here in Washington, agencies are usually good, but I haven't personally had luck going through them.
And I'm more of an office professional/admin type. I've managed offices, and have pretty extensive experience in the book business. (Not a lawyer or doctor!)

I'm getting a little disheartened, as I am currently competing against a lot of recent college graduates who can work for less than I can. Also, I have some pretty specific needs in terms of hours and responsibility, as I have a young son - and having a job with too much responsibility/overtime/mental exhaustion nearly cost me my marriage. I won't do that again.

It's overcast and rainy deep in the heart of texas too. Really made it a pain to wake up this morning. What is it about rainy days that makes me so sleepy? Or is it just getting home late from poker nights?

I like rainy days, as long as there aren't too many of them. And the more thunder and lightning, the better. We've gotten one day of rain in about two weeks recently, we could definitely use some more.

I don't work in farenheit so I have no idea what 97 degrees is. It's about 21 clecius here; which is far too hot in my opinion.
