What became of Earth after the small group set out for the new solar system FF/S takes place in? In the BDM they said Earth could no longer sustain our numbers, but did people continue to live there or was it completely abandoned/life somehow destroyed?

THEREALME

The story given in the school scene in Serenity implies (to me, at least) that everybody left, but it is possible that some remained behind. I got the idea that the Earth was no longer quite habitable. I don't think that you will get a certain answer to this question.

The collector's edition movie is supposed to have a featurette on this in the extras, I believe.

You mean the featurette that was one of those region 4 extras you guys missed out on? I'll hafta watch it again, then remember to report back with what it says.

Probably. But I'm not coming back to this thread then; gotta save myself a little surprise for when I get my copy. ;)

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

The Serenity Visual Companion says that "Every person willing and able to leave the Earth migrated to the new system." Doesn't say anything about anyone staying...

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

When history says "everyone," it just means "everyone important."

There were absolutely people left behind. Probably people not at all unlike our intrepid crew.

The flaw in that statement is that our own intrepid crew and those like them existed in the new system, and pretty nearly right away from what it says about pushing outwards.

I agree. Chances are, people whom were incapable of leaving the planet were simply left on Earth to die (a gruesome death no doubt).

The reason that it is all quiet in the Firefly Universe (e.g. The teacher in 'Serenity'), is because the Alliance covered that piece of history.
History is made by the victors, after all.

Look what happens in the present for a good example. People living on a volcano. If there are signs that it will erupt most people will leave, but there are always people who stay behind. They cannot be convinced to leave as they either do not want to leave their possesions or they do not perceive the danger.
