I just finished reading that thread about what songs should not be made into music videos. It got me thinking about what songs I associate with Firefly.

I listen to alot of Flogging Molly www.floggingmolly.com and they have quite a few songs that would work, plus an album coming out in the fall that will need promoting, like with a soundtrack tie-in.

Flogging Molly:
Rebels of the Sacred Heart
Another Bag of Bricks
Devil's Dance Floor

Pink Floyd:
Wish You Were Here

Black Sabbath:
War Pigs

The Pogues:
Wild Cats of Kilkenny

So, what songs do you associate with Firefly

Mal: Hell, I'd do this job for free!
Zoe: Can I have your share?
Mal: No.
Zoe: If you die can I have your share?

A couple come to mind:

Many songs by Nickel Creek (especially "The Smoothie Song" which makes me think in very visual terms of Wash piloting Serenity in all manner of graceful and daring ways.

Also Godsmack (of all people)'s song....wait for it....."Serenity," which makes me think of Mal in a morose mood, looking out the windows at the black.

Michael Hedges, "Bensusan" from his album, "Aerial Boundaries" (a truly superb disk. His death by MVA was one of the 'Verse's more painful bits of pernicious mischief). Actually, a couple of songs from that disk lend themselves to Firefly in its more contemplative moments (such as the title track).

Keep flyin' (And turn it up!!)!

Greg Allman's slow version of Midnight Rider. Very slow and cool.

Chris Thomas King - Hard Time Killin' Floor.

John Hartford's version of I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow. All on two violins and no vocals.

But for those who need well known stuff...

Bachman Turner Overdrive - Takin' Care of Business.

Norman Greenbaum - Sprit In The Sky.

Styx - Mr. Roboto.

Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike.

Lo-Fidelity Allstars - Battleflag.

Well, based solely on the sound of the music, I would have difficult finding anything to put here--the soundtrack for Firefly is a very unique sound to me. But I would say that Adamsterling had a good notion when he mentioned that David Goodrich's music reminded him of Firefly. I'd like to second that notion. The majority of the other songs I'll list are based on the lyrics they contain, not the sound of the music. I'm a lyrical person anyway, and certain lyrics in these songs always make me think of a certain character or certain situations from the show.

David Goodrich's songs:
Aberdeen
New Old Joe

They're just musical pieces, and they really make me think of Firefly. Good ear Adamsterling!

The Avalanches- Frontier Psychiatrist

This song has a western theme, which is mostly why I mention it. I swear if the lyrics went: "That girl needs therapy" Instead of "That boy needs therapy", it would be a great way to bring River in.

Leonard Cohen- Everybody Knows

The lyrics in this song remind me a lot of the crew (especially Mal) and the situations they go through.

Imahori Tsuneo- H.T. Destroyingangle Mix

This song is fast-paced, heavy music that would be great for action scenes.

Paula Cole- Saturn Girl

This song makes me think of River.

Blur- Woohoo

The lyrics can fit a little bit if I'm really stretching it, but I thought this song would be better music for action scenes. This is mostly because when I hear it, I think of Jayne shouting "Woohoo!" right after they perform the Crazy Ivan.

Police- Invisible Sun

This makes me think of the Blue Sun corporation, and its influence. It also makes me think of Mal.

A few.

Others Standing By-
It's about other life, but it reminds me of the crew in space.

Happiness
Because it can seem so many different emotions, like firefly, but it's when they sing: "Happiness is catching a firefly, setting it free"

I'm interested in that "Invisible Sun" sounds very interesting.

And, thanks to Lux (*sniff*), "Comedy Tonight" is now "Firefly Tonight".

alot of songs by Dave Dobbyn would definatly fit lyric wise (especially concerning Mal and Inara).as well as sound.

Hermitt Mcdermitt by split Enz is almost freaky in some of it's parallells to Firefly

Hermitt McDermitt

Ohhhhh
I'm Hermit McDermitt, if there's a better way I'll learn it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, my irregular ways confirm it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, in my tower of ivory if you find me, I'll burn it
you won't see me for dust, there's no one I trust, a hermit I must be

I won't be your criminal, I don't want your laws
Your taxi cabs and cheap kebabs and dingy dancing halls
I don't want your wedding bells, no top notch salary
It's a cabin in the hills or a cottage by the sea for me

I'm Hermit McDermitt, if there's a better way I'll learn it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, my irregular ways confirm it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, in my tower of ivory if you find me, I'll burn it
you won't see me for dust, there's no one I trust, a hermit I must be

You treated me like an afterthought and after all I'd done
Subjected me to ridicule, that's your idea of fun
O city full of promises and citadels so grand
I said goodbye to you and yours, and left for no-man's land

I'm Hermit McDermitt, if there's a better way I'll learn it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, my irregular ways confirm it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, in my tower of ivory if you find me, I'll burn it
you won't see me for dust, there's no one I trust, a hermit I must be

Living in the wilderness brings out the beast in me
I know I'm not the only one whose scent is on the breeze
Some of us have broken hearts or a price upon our heads
One day soon we'll all return and kill you in your beds

whoa.. whoa.. whoa..
I'm Hermit McDermitt, if there's a better way I'll learn it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, my irregular ways confirm it
I'm Hermit McDermitt, in my tower of ivory if you find me, I'll burn it
you won't see me for dust, there's no one I trust, a hermit I must be
I'm Hermit McDermitt (x11 to fade)

OUCH!!! Anyone else feeling their age here?? LOL!

Born to Be Wild - the cover by The Cult.
Their rendition absolutely kicks the living snot out of the original! I remember seeing the original version of the song up on the "songs not for Firefly" thread, and all I could think was - oh yeah??? Try The Cult!!!

Actually - just about any song by The Cult would probably work. But hey - I'm biased !

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but:

Firefly, by A*Teens.

Yeah, I know it's pop music, and it's uncool to like pop music, but check the lyrics:
Quote:

Firefly come back to me,
make the night as bright as day.
I'll be looking out for you,
Tell me that you're lonely too.

Firefly come lead me on,
I'll follow you into the sun.
That's the way it ought to be,
Firefly come back to me.

Also, in the country flavour:
Ride Forever, by Paul Gross

A.k.a. the Mountie Song, from the Due South soundtrack. It'd make a cool "keep flying" vid.
Quote:

We're gonna ride forever;
Can't keep horsemen in a cage!

I'd say you weren't that weird at all, but that would be the pot calling the kettle... sooo...

I love these posts. Okay - here we go.

"You're the One" by Tracy Chapman never fails to make me think of Jayne
Some say you’re crazy, Say that you’re no good
Say your family’s cursed with bad blood
But I think you’re cute and misunderstood
And I wouldn’t change you if I could
Let’em talk you down, Call you names
My mind’s made up - it ain’t gonna change
I’m sure in my heart, Happy and free
You’re the one you’re the one
You’re the one for me

"My Sacrifice" and "One Last Breath" by Creed because they sound like thoughts Mal would have when thinking about the war and everyone he knew who didn't make it.
Hello my friend we meet again
It’s been a while where should we begin…feels like forever
Within my heart are memories
Of perfect love that you gave to me
I remember

When you are with me
I’m free…I’m careless…I believe
Above all the others we’ll fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My sacrifice

~fade to black, queue the next track ~

Please come now I think I'm falling
I'm holding to all I think is safe
It seems I found the road to nowhere
And I'm trying to escape
I yelled back when I heard thunder
But I'm down to one last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say

Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

"The Remedy" by Jason Mraz, sounds like an Independent tap on an Alliance cortex wave (hey, I said I was crazy)
I heard two men talking on the radio
in a crossfire kind of new reality show
Uncovering the ways to plan the next big attack
they were counting down the days
to stab the brother in the be right back

"When I Look to the Sky" by Train for Serenity
Cause when I look to the sky something tells me you’re here with me
And you make everything alright
And when I feel like I’m lost something tells me you’re here with me
And I can always find my way when you are here

Saving the best for last...

"Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel - it's been called Mal's Theme.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

No objection here. My mom used to play Abba for me as a kid. And a couple of years ago a friend of mine who worked for Rent-A-Center brought home this CD they played in the store. It had the A-Teens song, "Upside Down" on it. We thought the video was so hi-larious that we made him play it repeatedly and started putting A-Teens posters up around the house.

And I can't believe nobody's mentioned "The Joker" by Steve Miller.

Quote:

I'm interested in that "Invisible Sun" sounds very interesting.

Here's the lyrics:

I don't want to spend the rest of my life
Looking at the barrel of an armalite
I don't want to spend the rest of my days
Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say
I don't want to spend my time in hell
Looking at the walls of a prison cell
I don't ever want to play the part
Of a statistic on a government chart

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

It's dark all day and it glows all night
Factory smoke and acetylene light
I face the day with me head caved in
Looking like something that the cat brought in

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

And they're only going to change this place
By killing everybody in the human race
They would kill me for a cigarette
But I don't even wanna die just yet

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

The chorus makes me think of the two faces of the Blue Sun Corporation. People who are more inclined to the status quo (Inara, Simon's father, etc.) will probably see the Blue Sun as a beneficial or neutral facet in their society. That's why it gives them hope. Those institutions can only make their lives better.

The rest of the song belongs primarily to Mal and Zoe, as they are the two who are most opposed to the Alliance and anything affiliated with them.

KINGOFKOINS

"Hybrid Rainbows" by The Pillows.

The song is in Japanese, but I still think it would fit.

The Japanese:
Hotondo shizunderu mitai na mujintou
Chikyuugi ni nottenai, namae mo nai
Kinou wa chikaku made, kibou no fune ga kita kedo
Bokura wo mukae ni kitan janai

Taiyou ni mitorete sukoshi kogeta
PURIZUMU wo hasande, te wo futta kedo

Can you feel?
Can you feel that hybrid rainbow?
Kinou made erabarenakatta bokura demo
Ashita wo matteru

Hotondo shinbonderu bokura no hikousen
Jimen wo suresure ni ukanderu

Yobikata mo tomadou iro no sugata
Toridachi ni yousha naku tsutsukareru darou

Can you feel?
Can you feel that hybrid rainbow?
Kitto mada
Genkai nante konna mon janai
Konnan janai

Can you feel?
Can you feel that hybrid rainbow?
Koko wa tochuu nan datte shinjitai
I can feel
I can feel that hybrid rainbow
Kinou made erabarenakatta bokura demo
Ashita wo motteru

The translation:
A desolate island nearly sunk into the sea
It's not on any map, it has no name
Though yesterday the ship of dreams came near
It did not come to meet us

Mesmerized by the sun, I'm a little burned
Though I raise my prism to the sky

Can you feel?
Can you feel that hybrid rainbow?
Even we who were not chosen yesterday
Are waiting for tomorrow

Nearly shrivelled up, our airship
Skims across the ground

Its color is beyond description
The birds will peck it remorselessly

Can you feel?
Can you feel that hybrid rainbow?
Surely
We can still go farther
Farther than this

Can you feel?
Can you feel that hybrid rainbow?
I want to believe we're on our way
I can feel
I can feel that hybrid rainbow
Even we who were not chosen yesterday
Still have tomorrow

11THHOUR

There are several songs that conjure up thoughts of Firefly. The one I'm offering would not have come to my mind if I hadn't JUST heard it today on the radio.

So in the interest of this new thread, and the coincidence of hearing a certain song by Bon Jovi...

"Wanted Dead Or Alive"

It's all the same, only the names will change
Everyday it seems we're wasting away
Another place where the faces are so cold
I'd drive all night just to get back home

[Chorus:]
I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it's not for days
And the people I meet always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell the day
By the bottle that you drink
And times when you're all alone all you do is think

[Chorus]
I walk these streets, a loaded six string on my back
I play for keeps, 'cause I might not make it back
I been everywhere, still I'm standing tall
I've seen a million faces an I've rocked them all

I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted dead or alive
I'm a cowboy, I got the night on my side
I'm wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

In terms of lyrics, I always thought "Minority" by Green Day worked pretty well.

Also, "Wide Open Spaces" by the Dixie Chicks would work as a theme song for Kaylee. Especially when you think of outer space as wide and open.

I"m partial to this song by Toby Kieth & Willy Nelson: "Beer for my Horses."

Lyrics :

Well a man come on the 6 o’clock news
Said somebody’s been shot, somebody’s been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn’t get too far yeah
They didn’t get too far

Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the street for all the people to see that

Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we’ll sing a victory tune
We’ll all meet back at the local saloon
We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
We’ve got too much corruption, and crime in the streets
It’s time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send ’em all to their maker and he’ll settle ’em down
You can bet he’ll set ’em down ’cause

Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we’ll sing a victory tune
We’ll all meet back at the local saloon
We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we’ll sing a victory tune
We’ll all meet back at the local saloon
We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

So, that's a good song for Jayne.

I like "Shiny Happy People" by REM for Kaylee

I am surpirsed no one has mentioned the perfect theme song for Wash: "Walk the Dinosaur." I forget the name of the band, but you remember the song:

"Open the door
Get on the floor
Everbody walk the dinosaur."

Mal's theme should be something dripping with melencholy. Something new by Paul Westerberg created especially for BDM.

Simon's song is another natural, even if I forget the artist: "I fought the law, and the law won."

River's song should be one of Paul Simon's newer ones with those free association lyrics he's into now. Maybe a new song. "Purple Elephants are Flying." with a chorus of "Two by two, hands of blue."

And even though Book is a mellow man of the cloth now, I can not think of him without hearing some martial John Phillip Sousa march. Onward, Christian Soldiers, indeed!

Zoe. Zoe. What do we do for Zoe. Zoe needs some kind of lusty amazon music. Maybe even without lyrics. I think Zoe and I hear something that is a mix of the themes from Jonny Quest and Survivor.

The only one that really trips me up is Inara. I think Inara and I hear some sentimental sap fro Fleetwood Mac. I really dislike Fleetwood Mac. SO, I have decided that I have no choice but to now hate Inara as well. Oh well. Some sacrifices have to be made. For Inara we play a funeral march.

I think something Oriental-sounding.

I believe the perfect album for Inara would be Enigma, especially the track "Principles of Lust" - of course....

"The principles of lust
are easy to understand
do what you feel
feel until the end
the principles of lust
are burned in your mind
do what you want
do it until you find
love..."

I've used it many times myself.....hehehe

Keep the Shiny side up

One oldie for Inara.

Sweet Cream Ladies, by the Box Tops

Sweet cream ladies, forward march;
The world owes you a living
Sweet cream ladies, do your part,
Think of what you're giving
To the lost and lonely people of the night
Out of need, they seek direction for their life
They will love you in the darkness,
Take advantage of your starkness,
And refuse to recognize you in the light

Sweet cream ladies, forward march;
Think what you're providing
Sweet cream ladies, show your starch;
What's the use of hiding?
Tell the socialites to look the other way;
It's instinctive stimulation you convey
It's a necessary function,
Meant for those without compunction,
Who get tired of vanilla every day

(salvation army band instrumental)

Sweet cream ladies forward march;
Puritans ignore them
Sweet cream ladies do their part;
Sweet cream men adore them
Let them satisfy the ego of the male
Let them fabricate success to those who fail,
And should penalties pursue them,
When there’s really credit due them,
They might keep a simple fellow out of jail!

(repeat & fade):
Sweet cream ladies, forward march. O-o-o…

Folks, folks--

We're going WAYYYY the wrong direction here.

Listen to the music of the series, and tell me if there's even the SLIGHTEST need for pop music, or anything with lyrics, or writeen by radio-friendly artists?

The music should be entirely original score, Southwest style, just like the series, and created by the same composers and musicians from the series.

Anything else would cheapen the effect.

... except maybe "One Thing" by Finger ELeven... :)

Depends on whether we're looking for things we'd like to hear on the soundtrack, or whether we're looking at things to make fanvids to. Personally, I've been hearing a certain song and imagining it done as a duet between Simon and River for over a month now:

RIVER
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

SIMON
[CHORUS:]
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

You used to captivate me
By your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind

RIVER
Your face it haunts
My once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away
All the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

SIMON
[CHORUS:]

RIVER
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along

SIMON
[CHORUS:]

BOTH TOGETHER
But you still have
all of me.

I found it particularly poignant because while I pictured Simon singing to River, she's singing both to him and to the Blue Hands. Neither of them are completely free of the other -- River because she's so dependent on her brother to survive with her mind twisted the way that it is, and Simon because he feels responsible and won't easily let himself be entangled by other matters... like getting involved with Kaylee, for example.

The song? "My Immortal", by Evanescence.

"Sir, I would like to gingerly point out that it is difficult for someone to be gently reassuring when they're holding three and a half feet of sharpened steel."

Anyways, my personal response aside, the soundtrack shouldn't be ALL southwesternly guitar-work. Remember, Joss's 'verse is a combination of both East and West. There were several that sprang to mind for me, which might be a bit outside the bounds of C&W.

Examples include:

Cowboy Bebop - "Spokey Dokey"
Queensryche - "Real World"
Black Hawk Down - "Barra Barra"
Big Pig - "I Can't Break Away"
Matthew Good Band - "Weapon"

TEELABROWN

I have the lyrics for "Others Standing By" if you're interested. They remind me of Firefly, but the point is about other things.

Lyrics:
Are we all alone, or are there others standing by.
Waiting to see what we will do, how hard we'll try?
It costs a lot to live, even more to fly.
Kindly send a prayer my way while I shoot up in the sky.

“Why would you go there?” they say.
“There's nothing up there anyway.
We could use the money here.
Don't you know that life's too dear?”
Dreamers never ask why.
Spend their money in the sky.

We'll send the best from Earth, to find out what it's worth.
We'll send the best from Earth, to find out what it's worth.

Late at night when I'm feeling blue,
I know the dream can't come true.
Everything's too far away —
Generations far, they say.
But like things that can't be done
Beyond the pull of our sun,
To some far star we'll steer,
Though it takes a thousand years.

And the sky's no limit anymore.
We've broken through heaven's door.
Don't you want to see where we could be?

Ain't it funny how people dream?
Make up worlds they've never seen,
Beings wonderful and rare
In this cosmos that we share.
Sometimes dreams come true.
Satellites beyond the blue,
Welcoming the human race
When we go and live in space.

I do think we're looking for music to go in the movie/show. Just things that seem to fit with the movie/show.

Yeah, Teela, that is kinda more my intention than putting together a soundtrack. I am sure that Joss and 'ems can do that on their own.

But, if we did hear lyrical music, I tend to think it would be along the lines of Chinese, English and Celtic folk music plus blue-grass and gospel out on the rim, punk/Oi! and blues in the more built up planets to contrast the psuedo-shininess of the Alliance...you know, stuff that people come up with on their own, based on the experiences that they have. Of course, what we associate with it varies from person to person.

I think some C&W songs by Chris Ledoux might fit the show really well. "This Cowboy's Hat" is SO Mal!!!!! I can even imagine hearing it in Firefly...

"This Cowboy's Hat"

I was sittin in a coffe shop,
having a cup to pass the time,
Swappin Rodeo stories,
with this ol' Cowboy friend of mine

some motorcycle riders started snickerin in the back.
started pokin fun at my friends hat.

one ol' boy said "Hey Tex, where'd ya park yer Horse?"
my friend just pulled his hat down low,
but they couldnt be ignored.

one husky fella said
"I think ill rip that hat right off yer head"
Thats when my friend turned around,
and this is what he said.

Chorus:
You'll ride a black tornado,
across the western sky,
Rope an ol' Blue Northern,
and milk it till its dry,
Bulldog the mississippi,
and pin it's ears down flat,
Long before you take this CowBoys Hat!

Now partner, this ol' hats better left alone,
see it used to be my daddy's,
but last year he passed on,
My nephew skinned the rattler that makes up this hat band,
but back in 69' he died in Vietnam.
This eagle feather was given to me by an old indian friend of mine,
someone ran him down somewhere alone that Arizona line,
and a real special lady gave me this Hat pin,
but i dont know if ill ever see her again...

Repeat Chorus

Now if your leather jacket means to you what this hat means to me,
then we understand eachother,
and we'll just let it be.
but if you still think its funny,
Man you got my back up against the wall,
And if you touch my hat,
your gonna have to fight us all!

Right then i caught a little sadness in that Gang leaders eyes,
he turned back to the others,
and they all just kinda shuffled on outside,
but when my friend turned back towards me,
I noticed his ol' hat brim,
well it was turned up,
in a big ol TEXAS grin!!!!

Repeat Chorus

I wish I could post a link so that you could listen to it. I have seen that song bring tears - caught up remembering friends and family now deceased. I can see Mal remembering his war buddies and family back on Shadow...

Burn the land, boil the sea...

OK, on a Chris Ledoux kick/tangent right now. Mal and Anara, 5 years later, married, the "critters" are at home, & they're out at one of her Shindigs:

"The Lady is Dancing With Me"

Lost in the music and her charms.
I was glidin' around the dancefloor, she felt so good in my arms.
When a tall dark stranger walked up, and cut in.
He said, excuse me sir, why don't you go have a seat.
I said well listen' here pardner, this may sound kinda crude,
But the lady is dancin' with me.
Now I paid for the supper, an' I bought the drinks,
So I feel that I've got the right,
Now I'm sorry ole buddy, but you just better back off,
Or there's liable to be trouble here t'night.
Now I can see that you're upset, 'cause it's always been a tradition,
To let a fine young gentleman cut in,
But if you don't take your hands off my lady, pardner,
I'm gonna have to break your chin.
Now, I've seen your kind before and I know,
Exactly what's on your mind.
Your woman probably left you, for someone else,
So you thought you'd just take a run at mine.
Yeah, you though you'd be leavin' her later on,
That's right...it's all part of the game.
Why don't you take my advice and on go back to the bar,
In one piece, the same way you came in.
The stranger took off and I saw him tryin' with someone else.
An' my lady well, she scowled at me,
An' she said, you know...I think that was very uncouth,
And goes against all the rules of chivilary.
Then she smiled up at me, with those beautiful eyes,
An' said, Mister, you know I kinda like your style,
But do you think we should call up the sitter and check on the kids?
I just grined and said, Naw...let's just dance a while

I guess that will be part of an episode in Firefly's 5th season. Title? "Shindigin' Again"

And another theme for Mal:

"Call of the Wild"

Storm clouds are building above the timber line
The lightning's flashing across the mountain side
The thunder's rollin' down the canyons of his mind
Somewhere beyond the great divide

The bugle of the bull elk echos through pines
The north wind moans her lonesome lullaby
He hungers for the freedom of an eagle as she flies
Somewhere beyond the great divide

Chorus:
He's heard the call of the wild
He's heard the call of the wild
The mountains callin' to him like a mother calls her child
He's heard the call of the wild

Livin' in the city oh it gets to be a grind
Puttin' in his hours workin' overtime
Waitin' for the day he can leave it all behind
To go somewhere beyond the great divide

Bridge:
He's got to get away from the city for a while
He's gotta answer - the call of the wild...

Once again, very very Mal.

Burn the land, boil the sea...

You need a song that succinctly and directly addresses the central theme of Firefly. No, not all that subtext about freedom.

Yep, I'm hooked on this idea. Be patient, it's just a phase I'm going through...LOL! In this one I can see Mal remembering life on Shadow, but then transposing memories of the war over the stampede imagery, kind of like a waking nightmare.

"Stampede"

We made camp along Red River
Watched the cattle as they bedded down
Back at the wagons, right after supper
Spread our bedrolls on the ground

And me and Willie, we took the night guard
And the sage never smelled so sweet
The prairie moon, was blazin' silver
No chance tonight for a stampede

Way over yonder, off in the distance
Towards the mountains there in the west
Did I see lightnin', did I hear thunder
The mind is weary, I could use some rest

Then all at once, the wind shifts directions
The clouds roll in behind the tumbleweeds
Those longhorn cattle, are gettin' restless
God help us all, if they stampede

Smell the rain, hear the thunder
The midnight sky, turns black as death
The lightnin' crashes, smell the sulphur
It's rank and strong, as Satan's breath

The cattle rise up, and go to runnin'
I spur my pony on and take the lead
And across the herd, I can hear Willie yellin'
"Hey...Stampede!"

Dust clouds rise, as the rain falls
They mix together, turn the air to mud
I feel the longhorns brush against me
I can feel the demons racing through my blood

Then all at once, my pony stumbles
We hit the ground, I rise up to my knees
In a flash of light, I can see the cattle comin'
Lord I know I'm gonna die in this stampede

Then I awake, and I look around me
I'm in my bedroll and I'm layin' on the ground
Over there's the wagon, and there's the campfire
I was only dreamin',...what's that sound?

And I feel the earth tremble underneath me
As the midnight sky begins to bleed
And from the blackness I can hear Willie yellin'
"Hey...stampede...."

I can see (feel) Mal having a really dark moment there - once again, really strong imagery.

And yes again, one more from Chris Ledoux. This one is a brighter side of Mal, more about what keeps him going. The last two stanzas (or whatever you call them) are the most applicable.

"You Just Can't See Him From The Road"

Well you don't see him much on the big screen anymore
The kids don't ride along with Roy or Gene
And that ain't really him with all those feathers in his hat
And some frenchman's name embroidered on his jeans

Chorus:
But he's still out there ridin' fences
Still makes his livin' with his rope
As long as there's a sunset he'll keep ridin' for the brand
You just can't see him from the road

Well he never learned to two step hell he barely learned to walk
But he's worn a lot of leather off the tree
He's had one or two good horses that he counts among his friends
He never drew a breath that wasn't free

Repeat chorus

Well he's tall in the saddle short on the cash
The last to quit the first to buy the beer
Well he's a knight in leather armor still livin' by the code
That's made him what he's been a hundred years

Repeat Chorus

As long as there's a sunset he'll keep ridin' for the brand
You just can't see him from the road

He's still flyin'...and that's enough. Oh, why the multiple posts rather than one big one? Easier for me that way. Sorry if that bothers anyone - just being a bit lazy I guess.

OK, last Chris Ledoux song (for now...he he). This one is for Jayne:

"Billy the Kid"

In the southern part of Texas, east and west of El Paso
Where the mighty Franklin Mountains guard the trail to Mexico.

Theres a new made widow cryin and a hurse a-rollin slow,
And I guess that Devils passed this way again.

Theres a lathered sorrel stallion runnin through the Joshua Trees,
A young man in the saddle with his coat tails in the breeze.

Got a six gun on his right hip and a rifle at his knee,
And hes dealin in a game that he cant win.

CHORUS
Poor Billy Bonney, youre only twenty-one,
Pat Garretts got your name on every bullet in his gun.
Each notch you carved on your six-guns got a bloody tale to tell
Well, youre a mile ahead of Garrett and a step outside of hell.

Them fancy clothes youre wearin and the women in your bed,
Cant take away the faces of the men that you left dead.

As you ride across the badlands with a price upon your head,
Now that wheel or fortune starts to turn.

Your reputations grown till its the biggest in the land,
And there aint a lot of people left who wanna call your hand.

And I guess youll go down shootin just like all branded men,
And when you shake hands with the Devil you get burned.

CHORUS x 2

I can somehow see Jayne fleeing on horseback, running from a posse of 20 men, firing Vira over his shoulder...fading...to Book reading over Jayne's grave. Makes me think of their scene in the cargo hold in "The Message".

Sorry for the Chris Ledoux binge - haven't listened to him in years...need to remedy that, I reckon. :)

ok, I've posted this before and some of you may have been lucky enough to hear this song. This song should play over the closing credits after the movie.

Quote:

The Valley - Jeff Black

As I walk down through the valley
and I breathe in the angel mist,
nothing to protect me
from this place that the devil blessed.
I walk with arms wide open
and I dream where the wild wind blows
that faith will give me shelter
and time my own reward.

(Chorus)
You see my soul is alive
and these dreams are real
and I will not let fear rule my life
or how I feel
Inside my heart
for the rest of my days
on the wings of a dove
carry me away.

To the left I feel the joker
tug and pull there at my coat.
To the right I feel the thieves
choke and dagger at my throat.
Stumbling through the darkness
like a drifter in the night
shaking off the violence
to the fall of the morning light

Chorus

You see they put it in the paper
around the world and on the air.
They run it down wire
baby till we're tired and we just don't care.
I know we can make it,
we can make it if we try.
We can rise above this mess
and fly in a clear blue sky.

And I know when the light falls on me
there ain't nothing I can't overthrow.
There ain't nothing I can't overcome
or come to know.
So lay your heavy load down on me.
Strip everything I have away.
I am not your prisoner,
I am not afraid.

Chorus

Carry me away, Carry me away....

You all might want to look into a band called Sixteen Horsepower (or 16 Horsepower - even the band itself switches between the two spellings). They've been strongly influenced by old time Appalachian preacher music (one of the band member's fathers WAS an old time Appalachian preacher). A lot of their music is about the evil in men's heart and vengence and things of that sort. I've chosen to describe them as Gothic fire-and-brimstone Appalachian cow-punk.

A friend of mine who I described this thread to also reccomends an artist called Nico Case, who I'm only passingly familiar with, but there's his two cents as a bonus.
