Of course not. A ring ISN'T love. If you lose it, you lose it. I wear my grandmother's wedding and engagement rings (on my right hand) but they weren't her first. She lost her first set on the bus when she took them off to put lotion on her hands. I don't think it made her love my grandfather any less. I think it was his intolerant need for perfection that made that happen. (they never divorced, but man was he a pistol until about 1978 when he had a stroke. That stroke was a godsend and mellowed him out a ton).

But for me, wearing a ring would mean that I am committed to someone and want others to know it. Not wearing it would mean that the committment is over.

For someone like Jimi, who has an open marriage, I suppose a ring would be a hinderance...because a lot of people do see that ring and stop thinking of the person as available.

Wow I figured this ring thing would be a one off question, but apparently it's tapped into our collective psyche..cool!

I was on the it's no big deal as long as I am wearing my wedding band why do I have to wear the big honkin diamond everywhere and MisterG was upset, but it seems he had cause to feel slighted so I'll apologize and make sure to wear it everywhere from now on...

Looking at it from a logical point of view, which I seem to lack in some areas, it would make sense to always wear it when going out. One reason would be to let others know you were taken (messed up an opportunity for me at last year's D*C, though I had "permission" to do stuff anyhow) and not to try to approach in that manner (unless you were extremely bold/confidant/rude). Another would be to show off the (carat) size of the diamond. I do, however, understand taking it off when there is the possibility that it or you could be harmed by wearing it. *shrug*

THAT is nice. I'd wear that. I like the combo of metal colors.

Actually I wouldn't wear it very often. I tend to be rough with rings and I like solid, strong, thick, and smooth. Nothing for anything to catch on.

Well, yes and no. What I have seems to be chronic, and if it's autoimmune like I (and several previous doctors) suspect it is, then it will be a life-long ailment. But there's research that suggests that all autoimmune diseases do better in the long run if they are treated aggressively as early as possible. With every flare of the disease, you get a bit worse and never quite rebound, so medications that prevent, suppress, or shorten flares keeps the patient at a higher level of health for a lot longer. So, all else being equal, the sooner I can get a diagnosis and start treatment, the better I'll feel when I'm 50 years old, etc. But I'll probably stay on the pain meds I've been on, even after I get a diagnosis, unless there's some medication out there that works particuarly well for this type of pain.

Wedding rings: If you have them I think they should be worn whenever possible, but I think it's more about the social norm than about any real meaning in the rings themselves. My mom didn't have a wedding or engagement ring until I was 6 years old, and Dad didn't have one until I was 11 -- it was just an extravagance that they couldn't afford for a long time. I wear both my engagement and wedding ring almost everywhere. I take them off daily for showering and dishes and such, but unless I'm going to the beach I don't leave the house without them. Hubby sometimes forgets his in the shower, but I don't worry about him getting hit on when he isn't wearing his ring , since he has a "married guy" vibe -- without realizing it, he tends to give women a once over with a look that says "you don't measure up", and then wonders why his friends get hit on but he doesn't, lol.

Books: haven't read Dresden, but the peacock story reminded me a bit of The Stress of Her Regard by Tim Powers. Anyone here a Tim Powers fan? I just finished reading The Anubis Gates, and I'm re-reading On Stranger Tides while I'm deciding on which Tim Powers novel to order from Amazon next. Probably my favorite author ever. His plots are a bit like The Da Vinci Code, only based on actual, verifiably correct historical facts. (My apologies to any Dan Brown fans, but you're not likely to find a bigger Dan Brown hater than me.)

Have you left your house/job for a significant time? Do you feel better, then? Reason for mentioning is that I had a co-worker that gained serious health issues that he couldn't nail down to anything. Then he changed jobs and convinced himself that it was the building that he worked in. He had another co-worker that experienced the same thing. CK- have you tried a teaching hospital?? Usually medical professors have a wider range of info available to them and they can share it as a case history with a large chunk of people who can all brainstorm...that can be really effective. HUGS and wish I could help more

I live pretty close to a med school, so by default about half of the specialists I've seen also teach at the school, but I haven't tried a teaching hospital specifically. My insurance being what it is, I generally have to work through a primary care doc, and I'm done trying to pick one of those based on supposed credentials.

Oh, if we're posting rings, here's the best one I managed to snap of mine, almost five years ago when I was planning the wedding. I had a wedding band cast that fits the bottom edge of the ring like a glove.

Thanks Msg. The reasons are a few.
It's a beautiful ring, but it is large, and overpowers my hand a bit.
I worked with a woman many years ago who only wore a wedding band. I asked her about it once, and she said offhand that the wedding band meant more to her than the engagement ring, and having a big rock on her hand "wasn't her." That's when I wore my engagement ring every day.
Her words have stuck with me for years.

Lastly, I got used to not wearing any rings when Husband & I were separated. When he gave me the replacement wedding band, I decided not to put the engagement ring back on.

My simple gold band means more than any pretty he could give me.
Mainly, cause I value him.
