I've edited my original post in an attempt to hide my shame from a random embarassing drunk post. My apologies to everyone.

The whole point was (I think)

Which films / t.v. shows have an emotional impact on u or just make u go "ahhhh"?

I think i used shawshank and braveheart as examples of films (the others were less powerful like the wedding singer & turner & hooch to name two) & rivers "i dont belong" speech in OIS as a tv example.

What are yours?

The last movie that made me tear up was Terabithia. That movie just smacks you upside the head like a brick.

Pan’s Labyrinth, that I just saw a few days ago, had me almost there, except for the subtitles making it hard to get that lost in the movie. I had to concentrate too much on the dialogue to keep up, but if I could have gotten immersed the way I did with Terabithia, it would have ruined my whole day. The second time I watched it, I got some mistiness. There was a hint of mistiness.

A film really has to have some sort of deep emotional loss on a heavy symbolic level to get at me like that. The Wedding Singer just won’t do it, thank god.

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

For a subtitled film that nearly killed me I nominate the Chinese film 'Raise the Red Lantern', all their lives were so small and insignificant but the choices they make and the things they do to be the biggest fish in their little pond... to feel secure and in control... it just has me bawling!

Another touching film for me, is 'Glory' with Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, and all of my favourite African American actors - too many to list in case I miss one! The first time I saw it I broke down and was inconsolable and felt ashamed to be white... the second time (the next day, it was that good for me!) I started crying about half way through and didn't stop til well after it was finished...

Of course I am a girly girl... so this might not have anything to do with the post that isn't sure where it was going anymore...

EDIT: coz I just realised neither of these would be classified as 'chic flicks' so... perhaps it is pertinent!

Ooo..lots and lots...old Disney movies...from "Bambi" to 'Dumbo" to"Old Yeller"..when I was a kid (altho, they'd probably do the same to me today..) I think a lot of how a film hits you depends on where you are in your life when you see it. For instance, I saw ET after a major loss...and it nearly slayed me...BUT it also made the pain better...don't know why... Books have made me weep as well, for the sheer beauty of words. Nobility, sacrifice and honor; these human qualities if well-portrayed in novels or on screen I think are recognized at a very deep level and we-as humans-connect with those qualities and it 'pulls' something from us that quite often manifests in tears or high emotion. "Life is pain" (from The Princess Bride)...if you have even had a tiny brush with the pain being written about or shown, you connect and "feel" and with that comes the "ahhh" or tears..fighting that connection or those feelings is how people become calloused, apathetic and non-caring, IMHO.

I love, love, LOVE that movie - but I also get a tear in my eye when he says that line! Oh yes!!

And "Gettysburg" when General (Oh-what-the-heck-is-his-name??? The pretty one with the simpering manners???) comes through the chaos and smoke and yells, "I can't see my boys!" and they've all been slaughtered!

Oh I understand that too, Sister!! Sometimes we don't know how to deal with feelings - they are abstract things, difficult to interpret, but then we see something that allows us the full gammut of emotions without having to personalise it too much and it is such a release! I saw something recently (sorry brain is mushy tonight, can't recall what) but it triggered some grief over a lost relationship and the stupidity of what was lost over one persons doubts and fears and inability to try to make it work... I just bawled most of the way through it...

And yes, I still get a lump just thinking about my first time of seeing 'Bambi'...

FISKMASEN

Can't say that many movies makes me cry, but one that stands out is Return of The King, the scene where the hobbits bow before Aragorn, and he says "My friends. You bow to no-one." And everyone instead bows before them. That's one of those scenes that makes me cry.. a lot. ^^
Boondock Saints also keeps me on the verge of crying through the entire film, but that's because of the raw brilliance of the movie. =)

..Boondock Saints...GREAT film! The Tolkien trilogy has always been a journey of wonder and emotion for me...both the books...and the films (SO grateful Peter Jackson loved the books before he did the films...I was so worried they would suck..instead they are brilliant). The ol film "To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck is super..."Wizard of Oz"...first time magic when the film went from black and white to color..and PLEASE!...Flying Monkeys!! Yikes! My husband never watched Shawshank Redemption because he hated the main actor..but once I asked him to watch it with me he loved it...oh, oh, and Green Mile???? Wow that's another....

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

One of my favorite films is at times sad and solemn, but also joyful and full of love and spirit, and there are many scenes that bring a tear to my eye.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being, starring Daniel Day Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche, directed by Philip Kaufman, and set before, during and after the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Lewis' character grows from a womanizing SOB to one of conscience and caring, aided by the love of two incredible women.

Here's a few others I would put in a similar category:
American Heart - directed by Martin Bell, starring Jeff Bridges and Edward Furlong

City of Hope - directed by John Sayles, starring Vincent Spano, Chris Cooper, Joe Morton, Angela Bassett and David Strathairn

Empire of the Sun - directed by Steven Spielberg (his best film to date imo), starring Christian Bale, John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson.

The Fisher King - directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams and Mercedes Ruehl.

Four Friends - directed by Arthur Penn, starring Craig Wasson and Jodie Thelen.

Heavenly Creatures - directed by Peter Jackson (his best film, and yes I do mean that), starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey.

Sophie's Choice - directed by Alan J. Pakula, starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol.

Tempest - directed by Paul Mazursky, starring John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands and Susan Sarandon.

What Dreams May Come - directed by Vincent Ward, starring Robin Williams and Annabelle Sciorra.

I'm sure I'll think of a few others later.

I have to say that I have never ever cried in any film the way I did in Serenity
I was shocked by Wash's death
(er.... spoiler alert? LOL)

And when Zoe said 'he's not coming' the tears started to flow...
when I laughed at Jayne thinking he might be the only one to survived I mentally shook my fist at Joss for making me laugh while I was crying...
But then when Zoe stepped in front of the line, in a suicidal attack directly into the Reavers I started to sob aloud (I shoved my coat in my mouth so I wouldn't make noise and annoy my neighbors...).

I've never cried so hard in a movie before.

Okay, guess who's never cried at a movie!

Or at Firefly. Or Serenity, which is so much more than a movie.

So my first one was so TOTALLY about bad timing. I was listening to the audio recording of the movie adaptation of a Star Trek TNG movie -- (Think it was... gah. Be right back with the right one.) Nemesis. Don't ask. So, lovely scene, which I shall put in spoilers for those who care about strange movies in the sci-fi genre of the Trek fandom...

So, lying in bed, listening to the scene where Data's floating through space. I pause it JUST AFTER he misses the first bit of the space ship. I thought Data was dead. I don't even really like Data on a level enough to cry. Silly, stupid me thought that was the end. I don't know how, I don't know why. If I hadn't paused the farking tape, I would have gone on to him actually getting on the ship!

Stupid me. YEah.

So, second time I cried for 'fiction' was Doctor Who. Don't look at me like that. We'll go lovely spoilers here again, just in case.

The season two finale of Doctor Who is a two-parter. Army of Ghosts, part 1; Doomsday, part 2. So, lovely episode, Rose is standing on a beach at the beginning. "This is the story of how I died." Blah. She does this BOTH beginnings of the episode. I watched this on Skiffy (Before I knew the intarwebs held episodes the day after they aired in Britain. Now I know, and something tells me this is how I'm going to watch season 4. *grin*), when, premier night, they show both together. Yay for Skiffy. I didn't cry at anything in Army of Ghosts. Actually, I was fine until Doomsday. Fine until we get to the scene were Rose has come back, we've attached the funny handle weightless things to the wall, and we've opened the breach.

Damned Murray Gold is good at his job: the score. The song in the background, once Rose is sucked through... GAH. Sadness. Insert tears here. It's all: "Damn. Now we're separate. Separate universes. Fun. Let's have angst and tear-jerk conversation on a beach. And it'll be named after a plot point from last season: Bad Wolf Bay (IN Norwegian!) Oh, and I'm going to try to tell you something Rose, but I'm not going to finish, 'cos I'm a git. Or Russel T. Davies is. I'm not certain which." So, tears there too. And if that wasn't enough, my mother asked me what was wrong, and immediately after the end, I go to my room. Still crying, and go to sleep. Crying.

Wake in the morning. Eat breakfast, realize, ZOMG, my brother's watching it on TiVo. Stop eating breakfast, 'cos I'm crying into my cereal, just HEARING it from a room away.

See, it was that that convinced me I had emotions. At all. Well, emotions at television. I've watched it since, still get sad. Don't cry. However, not telling when I'm going to cry again... mainly I just get scared, down in the pit of my stomach for a character. Like, um... yeah.

Nice ramble there. Hope you guys care enough... and that my post makes any sense without the spoilers.
