I'd like to do a top five but right now, with my current state of heart I'd say The Maxx from Sam Kieths The Maxx and his female counterpart Julia.

Back in a place I never wanted to be remembering who I am, not who someone else thinks I am or someone I used to be.

That pretty much sums it up.

LWAVES

Yeah!!! New list.
And one I don't think I've seen before.

It's a toughie tho'. So many to choose from.

For male character it would have to be Constable Benton Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He came to Chicago on the trail of his father's killer and for reasons that need not be gone into now, has remained attached as liason to the Canadian Consulate.
Seriously, I always liked his honesty, loyalty and determination to do the right thing. Whilst he could be a little naive about some things, he still went with his heart in the right place. Even if he lost out by it.
There was a lot to admire about him.

For female I would have to go with the obvious answer of Buffy.
I thought long about this, bringing in novels, tv and films, but she has always stood out on top. There she was dumped with this almighty destiny, which basically meant she wasn't going to live long. But despite all her moaning, protests etc. she still followed her fate. She still fought for and protected those closest to her, to the best of her abilities. She even gave her life for them.

Hey Chris.
Mal I can understand, but would you give your reasons for Max?? I think it's a great show, with great characters (Herbal was my fave) but I am curious as to why she is your top. Maybe you just think she's hot (which she is).

Next!

Not enough people watched that show. Always a sleeper; real shame. Lot of heart.

As for my lists:

Male:
Duncan MacLeod - Highlander the Series & Endgame

Honorable Mention:
Mal - Firefly ("You wanna meet the real me NOW!" almost pushed him to #1)
Obi-Wan Kenobi - Star Wars (It being my contention that the further development of his character was one of the only positive things to come from the prequel trilogy.)
Madmartigan - Willow
Master Splinter - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Ferris Bueller - Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Yes, I'm serious.)
Henry "Indiana" Jones - Indiana Jones
Taran - Chronicles of Prydain

Female:
Aeryn Sun - Farscape

Honorable Mention:
Samus Aran - Metroid game series (again, a close call)
River Tam - Firefly
Delenn of Mir - Babylon 5
Dr. Janet Frasier - Stargate SG-1
Lady Jessica - Dune

REGINAROADIE

So many good ones here. The ones I'm listing isn't necessarily "all time", but here are just a few off the top of my head.

Charles Foster Kane - CITIZEN KANE One of the great tragic characters in film history. The introductions to him and to another famous Orson Welles character Harry Lime in THE THIRD MAN are two of the best character reveals ever. But I give the edge to Kane in that no matter how many perspectives you see of the man, you never really know him. He's neither a hero or an asshole, although he has characteristics of both.

"A toast, Jedediah, to love on my own terms. The only terms anyone ever knows. His own."

Withnail from WITHNAIL AND I - There are many famous drunks, but this one is my favorite in that every one of Withnail's lines is a memorable quote and that he's a comedically tragic character. Yes, we laugh with him and at him, but at the end you realize that being a drunken unemployable actor is all he'll ever be. And the Hamlet monologue he delivers at the end of the movie is by far the best bit of Shakespearian acting ever put to film.

"I must have some booze. I DEMAND TO HAVE SOME BOOZE!!!"

Terry Anne Wolfmeier from THE UPSIDE OF ANGER - I know 2005 will be the year of SERENITY for all of us here, but one other movie I saw that I was a huge fan of was this little gem of a movie starring Joan Allen as the matriarch of these four girls. The husband has just disappeared (everyone thinks he ran off with his secretary, but the reveal at the end of the film as to his whereabouts brings a tragic edge to the movie I'm a big fan of real tragedies), and so this once very happy housewife has turned into this angry alcoholic whose trying to keep her family together. And even though she's a character that you're not supposed to like, you're both rooting for her and at times astonished at her behaviour.

"I love how you worry that the letter you sent to the parent who deserted you sounds too mean, and yet to the one here in the fight, you have no trouble saying the most vile things. Isn't that a tad odd?" (walks away, and then returns) "Please finish setting the table."

Susan Alexander in CITIZEN KANE

Even though KANE is pretty much all Welles show, he does give his actors great characters and material to play with. Susan Alexander is my favorite female character in the movie, since she's at first one of the few people sympathetic to Kane, but after years of abuse, she finally leaves. And when Kane pleads to her to stay, she gives what I think is the great put-down ever spoken.

"I see. So this is YOU who this is being done to. It's not me at all. Not how I feel. Not what it means to me. I can't do this to you? Oh yes I can."

What can I saw, I like the classics.

Oh and just really quickly, Elwood Blues, Calamity Jane from DEADWOOD, Salieri from AMADEUS and Mame Dennis as played by Rosalind Russell in AUNTIE MAME.

**************************************************
"And it starts with a sentence that might last a lifetime, or it all might just go down in flames. If I let you know me, then why would you want me? Each day I don't is a shame. Each day I don't is a great shame."

Loudon Wainwright III - "Strange Weirdos" off the "Knocked Up" soundtrack

From books:
Male: E. C. Gordon (Heinlein's Glory Road), which happens to be a role Nathan would be ideal for.

Gully Foyle (Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination)
Ensign Flandry (multiple Poul Anderson stories)

C'Mell (Cordwainer Smith's "The Ballad of Lost C'Mell" and Norstrilia)
Wendy Shasta Leonardo (Norman Spinrad's Child of Fortune)
Hildy Johnson (John Varley's Steel Beach) - yeah, yeah, I know I put this character in the male list too. You'd just have to read the book.
Holly Hollander (Gene Wolfe's Pandora by Holly Hollander)

MOBBEX

Stupid son a bitch dressed me up like a gorram doll!

Okay I thought about this long and wide

[s]Male:[/s] Malcolm Reynolds

HM(s): (in to particular order)
~ R. Daneel Olivaw (ehr... do androids count as male ?) ~ A boatload of Asimov books. Daneel > Data
~ Agent Smith ~ The Matrix
~ Jon Crichton ~ Farscape
~ Col. Jack O'Neil ~ Stargate SG1 & Stargate movie
~ Dark Vador ~ Star Wars

[s]Female:[/s] River Tam (My fascination for River knows no bounds.)

HM(s): (same as above)
~ Kreia/Darth Traya ~ SW KoTOR
~ Sarah Kerrigan ~ StarCraft
~ Dr Susan Calvin ~ Robots (NOT the movie)

Okay so I guess that some of you may smell some bias coming off this post... Well I guess it's yet another sign of your tragic space dementia . Seriously, I fell in love with the show largely because of it's thoroughly layered, multi-dimensionnal characters. No matter how I tried to put it their names still wound up on top. 'Point is : I didn't pick Mal & River because I *like* Firefly and I'm posting on a Firefly fan site. I did it because I honestly feel that they are the best gorram fiction characters ever written/acted!

Oh I spent way to much time dwelling on that... jesus...

Trying to find two single characters from all mediums (although River would most definitely be the female) while discarding others would be too difficult and exclusive, so I'm going to mention my favourites from the three 'main' mediums, though some of the choices would change daily.

Books:

Female: Margaret 'Meg' Murry
Male: Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov

TV:

Female: River Tam
Male: George Oscar Bluth II AKA Gob

Movies:

Female: River Tam
Male: Ricky Fitts (yeah, I know they're similiar)

She is for me the top example of a female (or male, for that matter) character that suffered loss and alienation who survived to find the gentler, loving side of herself in an often brutal existence. The character as written was great, but Alba took it to another level with her simple innocence among the kaos(sp?).
She, Mal, Buffy, and Ric Deccard (Blade Runner) are my faves because of this strength of character, and how well presented they were.

Oh, crap. Ender! I totally forgot about Ender! (Seriously, if you have never read Ender's Game, do it! Especially if you are a male and had people picking on you growing up, especially if it was because you were "smart." If that is the case, you'll understand the social imperatives on the boy so strongly that you'll FEEL what he feels. If that be the case, I'd say if Ender's Game has not been translated into a language you speak, it would be worth it to learn a new tongue just to read it.)

That said, the reminder about Ender has made it impossible for me to choose. I had to cut too many already. Consider my lists just brief excerpts and my standouts of 'greatest' over HMs to be passing whims; I couldn't possibly exclude anymore.

SINGATE

Okay, I'll play.

Male: Elric
From the novels written by Michael Moorcock. This guy is the anti-Conan of the fantasy genre. Instead of being strong and noble he is a sickly albino forced to take drugs to maintain his strength. Instead of winning a kingdom he is born into royalty, the emperor of a decandent and somewhat depraved people. Instead of being a benevolent ruler he abandons his throne in search of adventure. Instead of being the typical knight in shining armor he is aligned with various dark forces including the most powerful Lord of Chaos. Throughout the books he is directly responsible for the deaths of his closest friends and loved ones. In stark contrast to Frodo, who is tasked with destroying the One ring to save Middle Earth, Elric uses a powerful object to bring about the downfall of his own world. The story ends with one of the great lines ever to appear in print or on film. "Farewell friend, I was a thousand times more evil than thou!"

Female: Ms. Parker
From the TV series The Pretender. A walking bad attitude. She's armed, tough as hell, doesn't take crap from anyone, and is fanatical about catching her quarry. Though her main objective was to catch Jarod some of her best moments occur via the political jockeying at The Centre. So she went a little soft near the end, I like to pretend some of that stuff never happened.
