I was sitting here preparing myself to watch "Objects in Space" (I've avoided it cuz it reminds me that the show is over but I *need* to watch it cuz I've forgotten most of it)

Anyhoo, so I was psyching myself up to put in the DVD and told myself "just hold out until summer of 2005 and we'll see what happens next".

Then it dawned on me.

Summer of 2005 will the the summer of Star Wars Episode III.

Now, Joss can write circles around the recent Lucas movies, but now I'm afraid "Serenity" will be overshadowed by this huge ( and most likely big dissappointing) movie. Eek!

Star Wars typically comes out in May...which means Serenity will probably be pushed to a late summer release...

Eek! Now I'm concerned. Though what *would* be funny is if "Serenity" comes out before Star Wars (like SpiderMan did) and rakes in all the dough first....I'm still convinced the only reason Spider-Man made so much money opening weekend is that Star Wars fans were trapped in Indianapolis with nothing to do after the Celebration that we all went to see it opening night (I know I did).

I do ramble don't I? I'm gonna go watch "Objects In Space" and get lost in the story...

Actually it will most likely help Serenity. Especially if it gets great reviews and Star Wars doesn't. Plus you will have all the Star Wars fan out looking for the next big thing since Star Wars will be over. The same can be said of the Star Trek fans since there won't be anymore Star Trek movies.

Plus I think the Browncoat community can defeat Star Wars. Keep converting and getting the word out there and Star Wars will not have a chance. I think Serenity will pull a surprise and will do better than any of us can imagine. In February it was announced that Firefly sold 200,000 copies already. I wouldn't be surprised it was at 400,000 copies or more now. It'll hit a million or more by the end of the year.

And remember these words from the Captain, "Doing the impossible makes us mighty."

So do the impossible like we have been doing Star Wars or anything will not be a problem to the might of us Browncoats.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am sure that Joss, Universal, and ME are very aware of the last installment of Lucas' craptacular prequels in May of '05, & will plan accordingly. I would be willing to bet that we will have "Serenity" a month or so after Star Wars, to give some time for the hype to die down.

Wouldn't it be great if we could get some SW fans to come over to our camp & check out FF?

well, i effectively killed the thread titled "Watch out Titantic, here comes Serenity!" with a post similiar to this, but here goes...

i figure we'll get all the dejected fans from the new Star Wars. Honestly, Episode 1 and 2 have been rather lacking, so Star Wars fans will look for a new sci-fi to follow.

also, it's been noted somewhere (i think it was the "who would win in a fight?" thread) the similarities between Mal and Han Solo -- a character type very much lacking in the new Star Wars movies -- so that can also bring people into the fold. Time will tell i guess.

Having Star Wars released before it could be helpful, because some of the critics may recognize this as a good film, and will point this out, because lots will be bashing Star Wars.
However, if they release it too close, it will get buried.

Yeah, I'm pretty much a die hard Star Wars fan when it comes to the original trilogy. Though I still went to see both Ep I & II on opening night, I'm not in love with them the way I love the first trilogy.

Let's just hope the marketing department knows what they are doing. The trailers will have to make it clear to any non-Browncoats that they can come and see the movies and not know anything about the TV series. I think that is another reason the new SW films didn't do so well, Lucas really marketed towards the fans and not towards a regular audience. (cuz we all know crap movies still make lots of money, it's all in the marketing)

I have no doubt that the writing for "Serenity" will be far superior to that of other Sci-Fi, mostly because Joss still knows that special effects mean nothing if you don't have a heart. (Something Lucas and others seem to have forgotten in this CG era).

And now that I've watched "Objects In Space" (with commentary too) I *know* whatever Joss creates will be amazing.

And as we get closer to 2005 and the release date - I will start visiting all my old Star Wars boards and posting about "Serenity" don't you worry!

And I agree with the Han Solo/Mal comparisons to a point. Those roguish elements are what make him so appealing (plus, comparing the two is an easy way to get SW fans to watch Firefly hehe)

I hate to say it, but I still love the whole Star Wars thing. I check the force.net everyday, just like I check this one.

I think there is plenty of room for more than one successful movie. Besides being in space, these two will have almost nothing in common. Still, we can attract all of their fanbase to help make Serenity the blockbuster it should be.

By the way, Starwars.com says the title for EP3 is "The Creeping Fear". I hate it, but it sounds like Lucas at his corniest.

Let's not do an either this or that thing, Let the Force (and the Sky) be with us.

See, the thing about Star Wars is that we shouldn't fear the reaper... I worked in a theater when Episode II came out... just a few weeks after Spiderman debutted. Spiderman had a few weeks on its own to get the buzz around, and even if it had been a stinker, it wouldn't have left before Star Wars came out because of the way contracts work. Now, you'd think that Star Wars opening two or so weeks after Spiderman would've resulted in SM being squashed like a bug, right? Well, you'd be underestimating the... shall we say... naivety of the movie going public. For the first week or so, every show we had of Star Wars was sold out in advance... but people would still come and wait in long lines just to be told the show was sold out. Having waited for so long, though, the really wanted to see a movie... and thus the vast majority of them said, "Well, let's see Spiderman right now and we can see Star Wars afterwards."

Can you imagine if Serenity was in this position?

Release Serenity a few weeks before Star Wars... let it get the buzz around, people will talk about what a good movie it is, and devoted FF fans will keep it grossing enough money to keep it in the theaters when SW debuts. Then you have those same people trying to see a soldout SW saying, "Well we want to see a movie... hey, Serenity is a space movie... let's see that."

I'll call it the "Riding in on Darth Vader's cape" style of making a movie franchise! :-D

While I think it would be great to get the Star Wars audience to see Serenity, I don't think it would do the movie great press for the general audience if people go see it only because they waited in line for a sold out movie. And while it would work in getting Serenity money, we also want Serenity to stand on it's own two feet.

I think the idea of having Serenity previews before Star Wars is a great idea. However, I don't think it's probable. Most movies seem to come with their own previews already included. And most studios only preview other movies created/sponsored by them. No free advertising for other studios.

I'm interested to see how they do this. Because it could go well either way (release before or after SW).

Ok, maybe I missed something, but have they projected a Summer 2005 release date? Last time I heard (which was a while ago) it was projected for late 2005.

Personally, I think it wouldn't be good to release Serenity as a "summer" movie. "Summer" movies tend to be waaay more explode-y,or straight comedy, and lately,it seems like "summer" movies also tend to be sequels or comic book movies, and those have huge built-in audiences.

If they haven't changed the projected release date, I'm guessing somewhere between late August- September to just before Thanksgiving.

If they have changed it, never you mind. :)

Why does there have to be competition between the last Star Wars movie and the first Firefly movie? Personally, I like to think of 2005 as the Best Science Fiction Summer EVER!

Lots of folks have mentioned Spider-Man and Episode II, but I don't think anyone mentioned the movie that wasn't particularly hurt by coming out a few weeks before Episode I: The Mummy. Although more Indiana Jones than Star Wars, it has a lot of "that Lucas feel", and I think, benefited from Episode I being out at the same time. Let's hope Firefly follows in the model of The Mummy and Spider-Man!

When I'm trying to describe Firefly, by the way, I've often described it as "the closest thing I've ever seen to a Star Wars TV series" or "kind of like of they made a TV show about guys who would hang out with Han Solo." Don't knock it; the approach has won more than a few converts.

It has been a while since I was a projectionist, but I doubt things have changed that much. True, studios do attach trailers for some of their upcoming films to the head of their features, but a theatre is not limited to showing only those trailers. Every time I go to the movies these days there are at least five or six, sometimes more, trailers before the feature, and they are not all by the same studio either. Any half-way intelligent projectionist will run genre related trailers with genre films, romance w/ romance, kid flicks w/ kid flicks, etc. So depending on when Serenity will be released there is a very big chance its trailers will be shown before Star Wars and other genre films released next year.

well slap my face and call me Stephen Glass - I dont' know why I assumed it was a Summer release. haha. I just checked IMDB and it only says "2005"....I guess I just figured it would be a perfect summer time movie...i can already see myself stuffing popcorn into my mouth as the theme music plays...but winter spring summer fall, all browncoats (and their friends wether they want to or not!) will be in the theaters a munchin and watchin and lovin every minute...

actually, that doesn't sound like a bad plan for a saturday night....think I'll go make me some popcorn and watch "Serenity"

The main character -- Anakin Skywalker -- is going to become a minion of evil (Darth Vader). His love interest -- Princess/Senator Amydala -- runs off into hiding with their twins, young Luke and Leia, to escape the horror of her husband's unspeakable villainy. His mentor -- Obi Wan Kenobi -- winds up a hermit, wandering the forbidden wastes of Tattooine, his Jedi Order destroyed by Anakin and Senator/Emperor Palpatine. Master Yoda has to hide in a swamp and eat gruel 'til the day he dies.

And of course, the entire universe falls under the iron grip of ultimate evil. In Lucas' version of Armageddon, the Antichrist and the Beast win. That's how Episode III ends, hello.

To make matters worse, Hayden Christensen's whiny acting and Lucas' stilted storytelling will make you wish you were only being strangled by Vader's Death Grip...

How's that for a feel good movie for the summer?

"Firefly: Serenity" outta rake in the dough after that fiasco.

Family Guy did it and it started off very bad when it was release onto DVD. Firefly was released and has remained under 100 in the DVD sales ranks in four months. The lowest it has been is 75. In the first two and a half months it sold 200,000. If it remains at a steady sale for the rest of the year like this then I think it can. Lets not give up hope. Firefly isn't BTVS or Angel. Plus, I am now seeing it in stores that weren't selling them when they are released and most of them are in plain view next to other top selling DVDs like Sopranos or Indiania Jones sets.

Furthermore you have to understand that I think a good majority of Firefly fans aren't fans of BTVS or Angel and some have never even seen BTVS or Angel. I'm not a fan of either (I'm not saying I don't like them, just not a fan) and none of my friends and not even most of the people that I have converted at Cantr but we all love and most of us now own the Firefly DVD set and wait with our breaths holding for Serenity in 2005. Some of use even multiple copies.

Just because we think the goal maybe impossible doesn't mean we cannot accomplish it. Keep converting and bringing people into the light of Firefly. Majority of people who see it turn out to love it. There are only a few (and we have determined them insane) who didn't get it and don't seem to like it. Let them bitch and and groan but I'm sure they may take a second look once they see how much it is loved by so many. Lets make the Firefly DVD the best damn selling DVD (not DVD set but DVD) ever. Lets also make sure that Serenity is a blockbuster that will be remember for years to come. I would love to see Serenity to sink Titantic and take its place as #1 in the box office and that is my goal for Serenity.

1,000,000+ for Firefly DVDs
#1 for Serenity

Now who is with me? If we give up now then we accept defeat as inevitable. If we continue to fight then we can keep accomplishing great victories the likes of which we have already accomplished.

200,000 Firefly DVDs in 2 and half months. It must be nearing 400,000 plus in the four months.

A greenlighted Serenity movie.

A year ago these were impossible dreams and hopes. Now what you say, Browncoats? Do we continue to fight or do we surrender now to the impossible odds?
