I really might not have been paying attention at all to see this BUT:
I have never seen a bathroom on Serenity. I know they have their toilet and and sink combo but no shower. How do they stay so clean?

Sheer force of will. Or in the case of Inara sponge baths. Or there does appear to be some form of communal bathroom in the passenger area that could include a shower or bath of some form. Seriously just because we don't see it doesn't mean it's not there.

Just going to have to quote MST3K

" If you're wondering how he eats and cleans and other science facts repeat to yourself it's just a show I should really just relax"

However best guess says each crew quarter has a head of some kind that comes out or folds out of the wall... probably one shower area off of the kitchen ( water transport issues) and that's it.

I do distinctly remember Inara taking a sponge bath, cause I kept seeing that scene over and over again. I'm into details. The crew does do its fair share of sweating. That's an amazingly good question. Mal's pants are always so clean.

In the blueprints by quantum mechanix there are three (four) places with a shower. One near the crew quarters. One near the passenger quarters. one inside each shuttle.

It appears that Book is coming or going to the head in Objects in Space when Early takes him out. So you can safely assume that there is one of some sort near the passenger cabins.

And in the episode Serenity, Mal is seen flipping the toilet in his cabin into the wall then washing his hands in a sink.

Maybe somebody with a copy of the snazzy QMX blueprints can let us know where the shower is.

Plus it seems to be a ritual of sorts. A spiritual as well as physical cleansing.

In the first episode, Mal is just finishing his business and closing the fold-away toilet. He then shows how careful he is by washing his hands. This was all in his cabin. So I expect everyone has their own private lavatory.

So watch "Serenity", the first episode, and you will see this scene very early in this episode.

The original post to this thread acknowledged the toilet/sink. The question was about showers. Heh.

Sorry.
As soon as I saw bathroom I only had one thing in mind. Shows sometimes I have my head in the toilet to often.

But I suspect they have fold-away showers like the toilets. I think Inara's sponge bath is something she does for her own pleasure. In her profession she most likely has done this for clients and like to treat herself.

BBM,

If I remember correctly Wash and Zoe have a converstation about bathing and watching one bathe in War Stories... I think the point was that they can't take regular baths aboard ship. Did you notice how little water Inara used for her sponge bath. My guess is water is tightly conserved like on a submarine. Although subs have showers, as an earlier poster noted Book seemed headed for the shower (towel on his neck etc.) when Early took him out.

Maybe if there'd been a season two we'd have seen a shower scene or two.

mmmmm nekked Zoe.

I DEFINATELY like the sponge bath

But if it makes you feel any better-Star Trek was supposed to be the ultimate in human technology and they didn't seem to have bathrooms either.

Battlestar Galactica is the only sci-fi show I can think of off the top of my head that has extensive bathroom scenes. Co-ed at that!

I have an old TNG technical guide that shows a head on deck 1 (right beside the door to the conference room). We also saw Picard's sink in First Contact, and Riker & Troi's hot tub scene in Insurrection (though that may've been a holodeck).

We also saw Neelix's bathroom, B'ellana's sonic shower, and Chakotay's bathroom sink on Voyager, and showers in the personal quarters in Enterprise (for Archer and Hoshi, so private heads may just have been for officers).

Now there's a heart-warming mental image: Spock and McCoy, side by side at stand-up urinals, having one of their 3rd season bicker sessions...

"More than 3 times and your playing with it, Spock."

"At least I have something to play with, Doctor."

"Why, you green-weenied Vulcan bastard...!"

It was pretty much bathroom humor when we got here!

Reminds me of that scene in one of the "present day" Hercules episodes, with the cast (in costume as the show's production staff) at urinals, all whistling the Hercules theme music.

A bit off topic but the best scene comes from "The Right Stuff". Ya gotta giggle at two grown men humming the Air Force and Marine Corps songs.
Just an image that came up in my brain while reading the above posts. Now, back to our program.

Somewhere Joss made the comment that Inara's sponge bath WAS about bathing; that water conservation was an issue on Serenity.

The passenger dorm did NOT have facilities in the rooms. There was(is-will be?) one or two communal bathrooms to serve passengers.

There may have been showers on Serenity for a quick rinse-off, but there weren't any luxurious-fill-a-tub-and-bathe facilities.
