I know the comparison is gonna have to be made eventually and it may already have been posted in a thread before. I thought it would be fun to compare the two and then to ask the question who would win in a fire fight dual with pistols ablazing.

At first glance the similarities are obvious. They are the essence of the vagabond, not wanting to set their foot onto a place too long, moving from one place to another... whether be maybe running from something, as well as, searching for something at the same time. They are both small time space smugglers taking smaller jobs that send them across the galaxy/verse. They are the criminals you want to love. They do the smaller jobs, purposely illegal, but not big enough to be considered a "space felony", and their smuggles/deals/crimes usually don't hurt anyone.
Both also were in the military: Mal fightin on the losing side of the Unification/civil war and Han a pilot in the imperial navy that left once disenchanted with the empire.

At closer look there are definitely some differences. Mal is the head of his crew and always keepin an eye out for them. He is definitely the reluctant leader and never turn his back on a crew member. Han is more of a loner than mal, and only comes back for the "star wars crew" after he develops a "thing" for our good princess leia.

Both Han and Mal are also the designated "one liner" characters of their respected movies/series...although in FF the liners are distributed more to the other characters, while in SW Han got the best ones.

Now the big question...who would win in a fire fight dual between Mal and Han. Both are in opposite sides of a long corridor (from some generic spaceship or space station), where there is plenty of boxes and corners to hide behind and periodically stick their guns out and shoot. Who would spit out the most one liners during the fire fight.

In the end...my opinion they would shoot until until they ran out of ammo/ran out of batteries, shake hands, and go down to the nearest bar for some hard liquor

also:

pod solo (post first half of star wars) vs mal. victory to mal who leads an unexpected reaver raiding party down on pod solo and his cuddly ewok chums.

Oh, im sorry - i forgot all about your corridor in the heat of battle - well, look, hell, solo's shot his way out and into a trash compactor already. "Yee Ha Kid! Never liked any damn corridor."

their consensus was WHY WOULD Han and Mal fight at all--seems they are quite a bit alike

I would say Mal would win cause firstly his real-life counterapart Nathan Fillion spends a great deal of time playing Halo so would have the best tactics.

But if we are just going on fiction here, still Mal as he has a massive pain threshold, he'd probably get shot by Han and then when Han comes over to finish him of Mal would shot him dead.

Classic Malcolm Reynolds tactics, as seen in: Out of Gas, Shindig, War Stories, and Serenity (The movies).

Malcolm Reynolds, he never lies down, just ask Inara.

Solo. Love Mal but Solo would take him. But really, both are the coolest characters created in years. Come to think of it, why not throw Jack Sparrow in the mix and have the most fun and dysfunctional crew around. Could you imagine the one-liners and power struggles and don't forget the rum.

ooh Han Solo or Mal?
Han Solo because he was the first character my brother and I shared an admiration for. Also colored by the fact that we went and saw The Empire Strikes back against our parents wishes so that made him cooler. mind you Mal does handle pain and beatings really well and whines less than Han Solo.
