I noticed the wonderfalls thread and posted this:

I love Firefly, I love Buffy, I love Angel, I even like Tru Calling. I tried to watch the premire of Wonderfalls and I just didnt get into it. I think I changed the channel 1/2 way thru. This Thursday I was thinking I would give it another chance after Tru Calling and watch a whole episode. My friend who got me into Buffy/Angel was over and we really tried...I mean we really tried to get into it. About 20 minutes into it we both were like...this sucks, change it. Im sorry but my goodness was it flat and boring. I know this wont be a popular opinoin here but just my 2 cents.

Not to be negative but I was wondering if anyone else felt this way..

Myself, I was laughing from the start.

The humor is certainly offbeat, and not going to appeal to everyone.

A good test is this: If you found that "Maid of the Mist" montage at the opening of the pilot even remotely funny, there's a good chance you'll like the show. If you didn't, start worrying.

Also, you cannot get the full story of a Wonderfalls episode without seeing the entire thing, at least in the four eps aired. They always held something back until the end.

I really didn't like the first episode very much - i felt it was very forced, and it didn't make me laugh much. But I could see some potential, and I liked the girl in the lead. I watched the second episode, and liked it better, but still didn't love it.

Then I watched it this past Thursday, (the class reunion episode) and for the first time I felt the show was hitting it's stride, and I was with it the whole way through. I laughed a lot, I thought the talking chicken was funny, and the whole thing tied together well.

And now that I like the show, it is, of course, cancelled. Sigh.

The cancellation of Wonderfalls is funny, and not in the ha-ha sense. I was talking to a friend on the phone the other day, and we were lamenting over the cancellation of Buffy and Angel. As I was trying to get her to try Firefly (as usual), I also mentioned how much I liked Wonderfalls. Then I said, "which of course means FOX will cancel it." We both laughed at this and boy, I was MAD to find out that it was true a mere 2 days later.

In a time when tv is full of repitition, "reality" tv, and the like, it was nice to find a show that was smart, quirky, and sometimes just so deliciously WRONG like Wonderfalls. Call the chalk fairy, FOX has struck again.

Understood. Thats why I tried to give it a chance this week by watching a whole epi. I think the problem was what to other poster stated..I didnt get a feeling for the charecters that made me care. The main charecter seemed detached to me. Maybe I need a show to hook you in the teaser or at least in the first 20 minutes. I dunno..I just had no problem changing the channel both times I gave it a shot. Believe me..I wanted to like it and I love Tim. Perhaps I dont have the type of sence of humor to get into a show like this.

I get the feeling that you missed the two most accessible episodes which to me where the 2nd and 3rd episodes aired which where actually meant to be episodes 10 and 11. Why does Fox think that screwing around with the episode order will improve a show and attract a larger audience?

All they need to do is put a new show on in good time slot and advertise it well, instead of putting it on a Friday at 9.00pm for three weeks, then changing the slot to Thursday at 9.00pm for one week, without advertising it and then cancelling it after only four episodes!

I liked it, because it had depth, rather than flat one-dimensionality like most other TV fare.

It was growing on me, but I knew Fox'd get around to cancelling it if it was any good. They just have no patience for anything cerebral. To Fox execs, "That 70's Show" is witty and deep. Have I mentioned that they are morons?

But I by no means liked it nearly as much as I liked "Firefly", which I felt was the best TV show I've seen in 45 years of living. Seriously.

Respectfully,

BLACKOUTNIGHTS

I've seen every episode of Wonderfalls, and while I found parts exceptionally hilarious, it's just not a show that I found myself anxiously awaiting the next episode, like Firefly or...hmmm...I guess I'm hard to please.

In all, TV in general really hasn't thrilled me all that much lately. I'm watching 24, but the conclusions of the first two seasons were less than desirable, and probably will be for this season also. I wish they'd do some sort of wrapup/winddown finale.

Wonderfalls did get me hooked on Tru Calling, at least until I find out about Jason Priestley's character. Anyhow, I read a lot more than I watch TV.

EMBERS

I've watched every episode of Wonderfalls, really trying to get into it, but none of the characters (except the bartender) seem like real people to me...they all have this 'arch' way of delivering their lines like they know they are being so funny...
and unfortunately I wasn't finding most of the writing to be all that funny...
So I couldn't connect or get involved...

Not like Firefly where every single character seems like a fully realized individual, and I want to meet them all and talk to them and learn their personal history and POV!

I think I'll also throw in here that I can't watch 'Tru Calling' either, I've really tried! But it takes itself soooo seriously. No one has any sense of humor at all. I really miss snarky Faith, I'll tell ya!

Wonderfalls was a decent show, but to me it wasn't one of those shows that I absolutely HAVE to tune in every week and watch. It just didn't capture my interest like shows sauch as Buffy, Angel, and Firefly did. But I'll defenitely say it deserved to run more than four episodes. They could have at least finished out the rest of what they had filmed to kind of bring everything together.

And as for Tru Calling, I've liked it since it started. At first I was worried about it getting repetitive, but I really don't think it has. And I also think Jason Priestlys character is going to add something good to the mix.

I dont understand how Fox could run a series out of order. I know they did it to Firefly with the first episode and at the end when they knew it was going to be canceled. Maybe thats one of the reasons Wonderfalls didnt do well. I also wonder if they did that because they knew from the pilot that the show wasnt going to last.

Actually, while filmed at the end, the 2nd and 3rd aired episodes WERE intended to be the 2nd and 3rd episodes aired. Tim Minear commented that towards the end of filming they felt that they needed something there to help establish the show [especially Karma Chameleon, which establishes Jaye's relationship to her family]

Ah, then you don't know that everything in that episode was designed to get the priest pulled over due to the broken taillight, so that a woman he had been with in his youth could find him and introduce his daughter, whom he didn't know he had.

That's what "Bring her back to him" meant. Had nothing to do with bringing the nun back to God.

That's what I mean by not getting the full picture until the end.

I caught the latter half of ep. 3, and it seemed OK. I haven't caught anything else about it, mainly cause it's on FX, but also cause I'm not terribly into TV comedies. I enjoy shows which have a variety of directions in them (ala Buffy, Angel, and Firefly). There are very few shows on TV that I will watch, come to think of it, but I'm downloading the eps to Wonderfalls and will watch them to see what I missed.

I think if the episode with the nun and priest didn't do anything for you, the others won't either. IMHO that episode was hi-larious and, by far, the best of the bunch. I am Catholic, however!

So, is there an announcement somewhere about Wonderfalls being cancelled? I must've missed the memo.

well, i'm sad to say that i enjoyed it as a writer (it was incredibly well written) but i'm not sure i was entertained by it on a basic entertaining level. my disappointment was that i liked Dead Like Me sooooooooooo much better.

i was just starting to warm up to it, though. and dammit! now it's gone. some people suck.

GORRAMREAVERS: The main character was supposed to be detached.

The invisible thread running throughout the posts is that you really had to have faith in the direction of the episode and watch the whole thing. I loved how the directions given by the animals only made sense at the end. The writers did a good job of distracting you by allowing you to think you had it all figured out, then completely reversing direction. In a way that I didn't feel was forced. The problem with the show is that it was VERY slow and dry. To me that's not a bad thing, but most people like action and quick wit, or potty humor if you watch some of the other things that pass as entertainment today. "Tripping the Rift" on SciFi, absolutely horrendous. Something else rather odd, which I would recommend, would be "Touching Evil," Friday nights on USA. And my apologies, this is a Firefly site and I absolutely abhor people who pimp shows on the wrong site. Notice how it didn't stop me though.

I thought the pilot was really good, and so was the last episode they aired. I appreciated the show mostly for the humor, I think. The second and third episodes really didn't do it for me though, just very long and I couldn't get into them. I guess I'm to understand that these were episodes filmed last because it was decided we needed more intro to the characters, right? Because then I can forgive.

As I said, only caught the latter half (and only bout 15 mins of that, a half of a half), and so didn't really know what was happening. The priests arrest was funny tho, even without context. "It's a rental." heh.

I will watch the shows and post what I feel about them. But as someone else said, they seem to be slow and dry. Not a bad thing IMO. Oh, "Tripping the Rift" was funny as a 5 min web toon, but as a full time show? Most likely not, as that type of humor gets old after 5 mins, and they used up all their time already.

HKCAVALIER

Well, I only saw the pilot and the "bring her back to him" episodes. The pilot was way too busy and cute camera tricks for me. I liked the other one better, but over all I liked the potential of the show more than either of the episodes I saw. The show was gonna go one of two ways for me: either Jaye was gonna learn from her experiences with the voices, begin to trust them and get down to business, or the show was gonna be like 99% of all t.v. and have Jaye acting like it's the first time over and over and over and over again, never learning a gorram thing. It's like Scully spending three seasons to get to, "You know, Mulder, maybe you got a point..." I hate that stuff. But again I thought there was potential for Jaye to grow, although her character was kinda set up to be eternally cute and cynical (read "one-note") for the run of the show.

I pretty much agree with Embers. But not enjoying the writing may just be it's not our type of show? My main problem was that whenever I "knew" it was truly funny-it was just too damn uncomfortable to watch. I'm sorry, but any comedy that involves people making fools of themselves or continually in awkward situations makes me want to change the channel so i don't have to experience it w/ 'em. (Most of simon's scenes alone w/ kaylee for example).

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I don't think it really matters if I liked the show that much or not, or if you hated it or loved it. The problem is that FOX killed the show by their programming decisions.

I am a divorced male, 53 years old, living alone with not much of a social life to speak of. Not exactly the demographic that the show was supposed to appeal to (or Firefly either for that matter). But it does mean I am usually home on Friday nights, and I did watch all four of the eps.

I wasn't that impressed with the first one but was interested in where the show might go and how the characters would change and grow over the course of the series. By the end of the fourth ep I was a fan and very upset at the cancelation. The promos for the fifth ep looked very interesting, with Jaye's brother apparently becoming a believer in her voices. I really hope another network will give this one a chance, or at least that we might be fortunate in getting a DVD set.

I'll be doing what I can to insure that either or both of those things happen.

ecgordon: I really agree w/you that Fox didn't give the show a fair chance and acted strangely (showing previews for an episode they will never air...what is THAT about?)
So if you know of anything to do to try to get the DVDs out there I would be happy to help.

Actually there is no reason for them to hold back on DVDs, they don't cost that much to put out and they can make some serious money.

I also know what you mean about the ratings demographic, once we reach 'a certain age' it is like we become invisible to the networks!

grrr argh
