Along with the monuments we always used to tour the FBI or the Mint or something institutional. And there was the obligatory visit to the Smithsonian.
I've been on the Left Coast so long I've never been to the Air and Space Museum, on the Smithsonian Mall. Serenity may not be there -- yet -- but there are the little bitty craft in which we humans took our first flights into space from Earth-That-Is.
Worth a trip for anyone who's nearby.

We went to Gettysburg!!! I still cannot believe it - and I am still rather overwhelmed that I have actually set foot on this remarkable piece of land where the future of the United States was pretty much decided over the course of 3 days and at the expense of over 51,000 lives.
