So very sad...I tried to share Equality Now and Joss's speech

with another board. I shared the mission statement of the EN and Joss's speech on YouTube. One poster became obsessed with whether or not they supported mid to late term abortion and even though I kept explaining that the charity is about fighting violence and discrimination and not really about pro-abortion just women's right to choose. She kept implying that because I wasn't saying yes or no about their beliefs (she was very black and white about it, I didn't see it that way) that I was automatically pro-abortion and so were they. She just wasn't understanding it. I tried to let her know that if she wants to find out those answers that she need to check out the site herself and see if it's something she could support. I wasn't saying "You HAVE to go to the site, gorram it!" I was trying to explain to her the best way I could but she was insistent on NOT checking it out because he MIGHT believe in it. I even told her a little his background, the shows he created and about the "cult following" he has...(the intentions were that she could enjoy the video because there's no agenda, just a great speech about equality for women all over the world) of people of various political views who respect him even if they don't share his views. Big mistake.

Then she got just plain MEAN. She insulted Buffy, made it sound like we were all a bunch of crazy freaks for being a part of his fan base, twisting everything I said putting words in my mouth, etc.

Without even going to the site or watching the vid because of what she THOUGHT she might find, she attacked me left and right, then followed me to another thread where I expressed my frustration of trying to do a positive thing by sharing all this and having everything misinterpreted and crapped on. Then the moderators stepped in and without warnign the entire gorram thread (both of them actually) was deleted. Not just the arguing parts, but everything.

On the plus side, several posters expressed their thanks at my sharing the EN info and one poster said she not only thought Joss's speech was GREAT, but she put it on her myspace page!

you just can't fathom or reason with some people despite best intentions. best to avoid these types, they have profound oppositional urges, and empowerment issues. ( hope this doesn't sound mumsy, I just felt for you, coz I often attract these types of people).

I'm a very... passionate and defensive person... when it comes to something I feel I can stand behind... so, yeah, I wouldda gottin into a verbal argumant with said poster, and probably said some not so nice things in english, that she probably would have had to use a dictionary to look up...

So sue me, I like big words that make people feel inadiqute, also some smaller words that most everybody knows and are DEFINATLEY offencive... *hangs head*

Thank you everybody...you don't know how much this means to me! Sorry I couldn't get back sooner.

That poster even went so far as to try to sabatoge me after the original posts were deleted. Some who hadn't seen that thread were now hearing stories about how I "said" that everyone should all listen to the great, all-knowing creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and how much he loves strong women and blah blah blah and how everyone should do everything he says.

I tried to defend myself, explaining AGAIN, my real intentions in the thread, how the misunderstanding started in the first place (or at least my opinion of it) but in the end it was useless. So I started another thread because I didn't know how to reach the moderators and tried to get her suspended or banned for the lies and harassment.

Didn't work, she's still there. Didn't check to see if she was still lying about me while I was gone though.

Went to the zoo yesterday and as much as I love animals, my sadness over the incident was like a dark cloud hanging over the whole day (although I still managed to get emotional over the dolphins and lions!).

I had such a sense of deja vu, reading your initial post and the update, JW. Seems like most established communities have someone like that woman in residence, and heaven help you if you cross him or her.

My advice? Never mention it again. Don't defend yourself, don't explain. If you can, put her posts on IGNORE (some boards allow that); if not, manufacture yourself a big mental IGNORE button and do not respond to her posts ever again, even obliquely. Even if she makes overtures to you down the road a ways. Completely ignore her.

Consider your point made and now don't ever bring it up again. If anybody asks you about Equality Now, reply that you'll take it to PM or something and then drop the subject. The newbies who see her post at and against you will be mystified by her. The longtime posters are already onto her game and are either sick of her or are her little soldiers who will be watching your posts looking for slip-ups and oblique references they can pounce on. Bleah. Can you tell I've been through this sort of thing several times?

Thank you, Little A. I still am having trouble getting past it though. Not just the things she said about me (and believe me it got worse than what I actually said here), it was that she was also insulting Joss, his fans, and this charity...all over something she THOUGHT they MIGHT believe.

Any argument that has to resort to anger and lies is a weak one, or a false one, and at some level that woman knows it too, so she had to resort to those tactics. The important thing is you tried. She hasn't won as long as you keep trying - not with her - that's hopeless. People can't be fixed, or changed, or inspired to grow until they're ready.

That is some great advice, I actually thought about abandoning the site altogether but there are some other posters there I enjoy conversing with so until they start believing her B.S., I think i'm gonna stick it out.

Oh no... I cannot believe that there are still such ignorant folk displaying their stupidity and lack of knowlege in this day and age... yet here is yet another example! It's like my sister who told me that Harry Potter was the tool of the devil and when I (who have acted as a lay preacher, a church Elder and a Youth Group Leader) asked her to specify exactly which part of the books could lead youth to follow the darker path, she looked at me aghast and exclaimed "you don't think I have read them - do you???" My friends and I still have a good giggle about that one!!

In other words, don't let the ignorant or shallow, narrow-minded obsessives put you or your admirable and well versed beliefs down! What they are truly revealing is their own insecurities and inability to grow in a complex and complicated world!

By the way - when women are no longer the victims of abuse, sexual assult, rape, incest and sex-slavery, that's when she ought to focus her attention on the abortion debate. Lets work together to remove those acts of evil from this world of ours before we start judging the life and death decisions thrust upon children, teens and young women around the globe!
