I got to wondering the other day what happened to the original Serenity sets after the show was cancelled. Who owns them for that matter? Will they have too build new ones for the BDM?

So my question I guess is, if they do have to rebuild them... will they change Serenity for the movie? What would you change?

I personally like the ship pretty much the way it is. Maybe a few more cockpit controls to augment the 'three switches' and the 'big red button'.

Hack the planet!

I would leave Serenity EXACTLY as is, which, I believe, it the current plan for the movie and soon-to-be-relaunched series (after the enormous box office records are shattered).

The only difference I would make is, I'd SOMEHOW create a role for the amazing James Marsters...

... that, and Kaylee would wear a whole lot less clothing...

... okay, I'm trying to curtail this obsessions, but it's difficult. Help me, please!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

The original sets were torn down & trashed by Fox. This was verified by Nathan Fillion over at the OB. He saw the parts in the dumpsters. New sets will have to be built.

I would not change anything about Serenity. If they had to make changes, I would want the changes to be small ones and only to enhance the background.

The fewer changes, the beter, IMO. Continuity is important.

However, I would be okay with a few minor mods to the interior set, in order to make it agree with the exterior of the ship a little better. Many leap to mind, but probably the most prominent for me would be a few stairs down into the engine room, in order to center it in the 'abdomen' bulb at Serenity's hind end.

Seems to me, though, that the forward corridor could stand to be angled a bit (i.e., so that it slopes upward toward the bridge). Again, not a major mod, but a little tweak to make geeks sleep a bit more easily.

And, of course, someone should really mention the FTL drive and how it works...

If I had the choice I definately wouldn't want any changes made but I think there might be a few small ones hopefully it wont be anything to noticable.

I would not want a single thing changed. The only thing I would like to see is perhaps having more people going up & down the steps at the front of the bringe. BUt I like the mystery of us still not knowing what is down there.

I want Serenity to be rebuilt exactly as it was...
for continuity
and because Joss loved her
when you watch the commentary you can tell how much it meant to Joss, that ship was a main character.
(man, I hate the idea of that ship in the dumpster)

but I'm loving the idea of letting James Marsters in...
w/brown hair...and maybe blue hands
(LOL)

Well if I had to change something it would be to add sets for what is behind those hatches in the cockpit, crew quarter’s hallway, common area, and galley. Oh and show more of Jayne’s room!

Wow, that sucks... Serenity all chopped up and left for scrap...

I'm curious how close they can get to 'old serenity' with the new set. I'd imagine it'd be tough to make all the controls and the engine and stuff look exactly the same. I just hope the differences are fairly minor.

I agree with Gunrunner though... new sections of the ship would be cool to see.

It does pain me no end to think of Serenity's interiors moldering in a dumpster (though it does raise the appealing fantasy of raiding certain California dumps...or, better still, paying others to do it for me!). However, Serenity is more an IDEA than a set of...um...sets. And it is a very well-documented idea, at that. The original blueprints are no doubt still available, not to mention the many (though not nearly enough!) shots from the show itself. Set designers are clever folk; remember that, when they made "2010," they had to reconstruct Discovery's interiors, based solely on the original movie. I don't believe any blueprints survived the nearly 20 years between the movies. And, lacking as the sequel may have been, the interiors were impeccably reconstructed. I think Serenity will do just fine.

And, yes, I would dealy like to see more of the ship than we had time to explore in the [first!] series. In addition to the bits mentioned above, I'm powerful curious about what lies behind those phantom hatches at the top of the cargo hold catwalk (on the forward bulkhead, catty-corner to the shuttles).

But I still think a few stairs down to the engine core would not be remiss...

Keep flyin'!

The hard core Firefly fan in me would love to see Serenity built exactly as it was -

The guy who just spend $200 on a piece of the set on eBay would like the new one to be just a little different so that my hunk of plastic stands out.

I think in the press releases it said that Joss had hired a new production designer for the movie so expect changes.....

I believe the report of the sets being distroyed is misleading. I heard some pieces were trashed, but the major flats (the parts that made the walls) were put in storage until a movie or series deal was decided. Large bulky pieces like consoles, tables, etc. are too large to warehouse easily, but flats are easy to stack and store.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I wouldn't change a thing.... BUT

You got me wondering about something Joss said in one of the first interviews that was up on the official website. He mentioned realism and the no-sound-in-space thing and also that he'd liked to have dispensed with the sci-fi standard of "artificial gravity", both because its trite and a pretty unlikely development, especially in the near future of the Firefly 'verse. But it was too expensive to attempt so he conceded.

Now, at this point I wouldn't want to see it interjected because it would radically change the ship, but it makes me wonder what things might have been like if they didn't have the artificial gravity to lean on. Any ideas??

On the Artificial Gravity thing; maybe have a scene in the BDM where they have to shut off the AG? Maybe Serenity's AG systems are not as advanced as the rest of Sci-Fi and will not work in some situations.

It would be neat to see the crew running around securing the ship for Non AG flight. Maybe Non AG flight is part of FTL flight??

I'd imagine the AG is pretty turn-key and well-woven into the 'verse's tech, since, as previously noted, it worked even when the main engine was dead and the atmo was verklempt in OOG. It would probably take a MAJOR malf to shut it down.

Not that it wouldn't be pretty fetching to see kaylee and Inara floating about with no visible means of support....

But I digress.

In order for there to be artificial "gravity" without the whizz-bang SciFi AG system, you'd need to spin the ship. Trouble with that (and this has been ignored in virtually all SF which depicts this) is that you'd need to have a REALLY long spin arm (the diameter [radius?] of the circle formed by the spin). If you had a smallish rotating drum, like in "2001," or (gods help me) "Mission to Mars," the gravity at an astronaut's feet might be one gee, but it would be significantly lower at his/her head, which would be downright disorienting and apt to cause hurling. Also, coriolis forces would be very pronounced in a short spin-arm ship (imagine pouring liquid toward a cup, but having to have your pitcher about 30 degrees to the side of the cup in order to hit it).

In short, Serenity would have to be IMMENSE (on the order of 100-plus meters) in order to have these effects not be noticeable. This would be a pretty big change!

Keep flyin'!

There has been nothing in any of the episodes to indicate there is a FTL drive, and I do not believe Joss ever intended to imply that they had it. This is another reason to assume the planets and moons they visit are all in the same star system, although it may be a binary system.

The original unaired version of 'Serenity' began with the following introduction, spoken and printed on the screen:
Quote:

The War to Unite the Planets was six years done, and the victorious Alliance was spreading its control further and further throughout the galaxy. Those who had fought for independence and so bloodily lost had no choice but to live by Alliance law.

"Some never would, and those few found themselves drifting - flying to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, to the worlds less civilized, some barely settled, where the Alliance might not control their lives

These were hard worlds and work was where you found it. Those who got by lived by a simple creed: Any job, anywhere."

That clearly indicates that they had traveled beyond one system. Joss indicated he didn't want to deal with faster-than-light travel, meaning he didn't want to even get into explaining it, trying to stay one step ahead of the science geeks, because it doesn't have anything to do with the stories he's telling.
